Even if you don't like Oasis's music you have to give`em credit on thier research - John himself said many times that he originally wrote "Help" in much this vien but EMI/Capitol/George Martin insisted on a more upbeat commercial version more in line with the "Mop Top" image to promote the movie. To his last day John always disliked the released version of Help & often talked about re-recording it his way. Read the lyrics - does it sound like a happy song to you?

And as far as a songwriter..Noel is one of the best songwriters of his generation, perhaps of ANY generation. No, he's not a guitar virtuoso nor a complex lyricist. But he takes simple chords and words and creates GREAT songs. Yeah, he pays homage to The Beatles in a lot of his work, but that's not copying or ripping off them off. It's a show of admiration and respect.

They released 15 singles since 1997, 5 of which went #1, and all but one made the top 10. Don't Believe the Truth and Dig Out Your Soul were both critically acclaimed albums. They sold out gigs all over the world. Noel is a very respected songwriter, and not just for what he wrote 10 or 15 years ago.
