The Doshu is withour rank. Chiba Shihan as a direct student of Osensei is as high as it goes. I was asistant to Chiba Sensei from 1967 to 1972, he is without doubt a great teacher of international renown.
Really? Was Chiba Sensei gesturing to Doshu like that? Doshu has the seniority and was being polite. Also, I don't think Chiba Sensei has been practicing that much longer than Doshu. I think they started around the same time; granted Chiba Sensei was about 18 and Doshu was 7ish. Also being an Ueshiba, he has probably trained more hours than most. Either way, one should be more respectful of Doshu. Would someone treat him like that if his father or grandfather was around?
My understanding is that Doshu is actually without rank... As he is grandson of the Founder, O'Sensei. Family lineage. Doshu runs Aikikai, so he would be the top.
Chiba Sensei is "technically" considered higher ranking. The existence of Birankai is an example of certain liberties he is allowed due to the fact that the current Doshu (Moriteru Ueshiba) is much younger and was merely a child when Chiba Sensei was studying under O'Sensei (Morihei Ueshiba). Its all rather confusing. Doshu has control over global Aikido affairs but Chiba is his senior in many ways. I was in attendance for this presentation ( farther back of course). It was really amazing.
open palm invitation? then a point to the spot? if one is going to make something of it, he's known Doshu since he was a little kid. what would one expect? many teachers and students are Doshu's senior in this way. some are Chiba's sensei's as well. How does Tamura sensei relate to Chiba sensei? Or would Arikawa sensei before he passed? Nothing so extraordinary.

That looks like a pretty tense moment! I noticed the gesture from Shihan Chiba as well. Seems like Doshu also respects Chiba a lot.

So who is technically higher, Moriteru or Chiba sensei? Moriteru is the doshu but Chiba has been practicing longer, no?

Ahh interesting, the reason I mention it is because of the gesture that Chiba gives him near the beginning, as if to say 'Come here' lol
