to any one who plays hockey , i'm 18 years old, and i want to start playing competitive ice hockey, i got 4 years iceskating experience, and i developped my techniques quite alot, only problem is puckhandling. will i be able to be a good hockey player? please respond
@whickedshell rule #1 in hockey is being able to skakte once your able to skate and you have good technique then you can start learning other things so don't worry if your good or not
@whickedshell this has to be the dumbest question to ask, thats like saying you go to the library everyday of your life and ask if you are a good reader. you shall be fine, just owrk on the hands and you will get better gradually
in my wind up should the blade be parrallel to the ice or the toe pointing to the ceiling, I never know how to grip my stick for a slap shot....hence mine suck
I havent played hockey, i really want to tho. Im not from a big hockey area(ky lol).... im 13, is it to late to start and if it isnt where and how do i start
Having problems getting the puck off the ground or ice can be many things. it can be the follow through but it can also be the wrong lie but most of the time its improper stick length if the stick is to long you contact the puck to far back. shooting the puck is like a golf shot, you can take advantage of where to contact the puck in regrades to your font foot, the closer to the front foot the higher the shot. the ONLY time you should have a stick bigger the chest height is it your a D-man
If your having troubles raising the puck, follow through higher, with a lower follow through, the puck will go lower, if it's higher... you get the point. if your having troubles getting the puck off the ice.. try going to a stronger flex, this will adapt your muscles to a stronger stick and therefore use more force. i use a 100 flex S19 and im probably 165 5'11'' and have an 80 + mph shot. it just depends on how you transfer your weight too. if your late on the the transfer, puck will stay low.
Yeah, Totally agree with this. You lose ALOT of energy in the flex of a stick if its too flexible.
Just remember that its basically all relative to size and strength. I'm 185 6" and use a 130ish flex stick. Don't go out and give a 10 yr old a 100 flex lol.
my problem is just raising the puck. my friends and coaches say i'm doing everything pretty well. but still no raised slapshots. any help here?(Nike bauer vapor stick i think it has 77 flex on it)
maallard, i have the same problem. (and the same vapor w/ 77 flex) I no the vid said the weight shouldnt matter, but i find it easier to take a slap shot with a slightly heavier stick, maybe like a 40/50 dollar easton. I know its different for everyone, but i hope that helps.
A 77 flex stick is way too flexible. It will release energy at some point just before hitting puck; hence, the puck does not raise. Try a 85 to 90 rated hockey stick.
But stay away from those wicked curves because you will end up shooting the puck too high(over the net).
@camlpg Not if they are young and cant flex a 85-90 stick, i find that if i have the puck further away from me it goes higher than when it's in close.
The reason the puck goes higher when it is farther away is because the blade of the stick is slicing the puck up just like a golf iron does to a golf ball. You may get higher shots but you are not getting max flex from the stick. Ideally with a slapshot the puck should be right in front of your body. You could be using the wrong kind of lie for your body height. A lot of these modern stick manufacturers do not put the lie rating on the stick. If you are shorter you need a larger lie (>5).
Not always true. Your flex should be chosen depending on how old you are, and how strong you are. A 77 flex might be perfect for younger players. In order to take a good slapshot you need to be able to load the stick, if your stick is too stiff (you can't flex it) then your shot will not be as powerful as it could be.
Check out my channel for some hockey tips, feel free to subscribe
Anytime the puck does not go where the shooter intended it to usually means a poor technique (which includes the type of stick a player uses). I saw your vid on slapshot and you do miss an important part of taking a slapshot and that is the lower hand on stick should be lower on the shaft then when taking a wrist or snapshot.
There are many things that must be taken into consideration in order to have an excellent slapshot and a 1 or 2 minute instruction does not cut it.
I agree, but that video is not a slapshot tutorial, that video is "slapshot tips for defense" so we did not get into full detail about every aspect of a great slapshot. We are working on a slapshot tutorial video that will touch on everything. We have an article on our website that has everything. Check it out and let me know if you think we missed anything.
LOL! A slapshot with 95 flex is just like playing with a butter shaft. But, if you take wrist shots a lot, you better sacrifice power for realease and pick a softer shaft. Cammalleri uses a 80 flex.
But I am a kind of Kovalchuk almost gripping my blade and scratching my knee when I shoot - just a bit exagerated, but you got the point.
Not any big though, like 175 pounds and 5'10'' but I take a 3 inches shorter 100 flex reebok now and it flexes just right any softer is too soft for me.
my problem with the slap shot is to use the flex i mean i hit the floor/ice right befor the puck, so i dont get much flex energy. and when i try to flex more its like i smash the stick on the floor :)
then your flex is too stiffi. are you playing with a wooden stick? then play with a shaft with a flex of your age. so how old are you and if you already have a shaft with a flex how much is that flex?
yes i'm playing with a wooden stick. iam 22 yrs old but ia quiet skinny (79kg/174lbs). i tried a shaft from a m8 with 95 flex and it worked much better for me than my wooden stick. no watin for my own 95 flex shaft :/
damn i wish i played hockey.. too bad im not from an ideal hockey area (im from nyc, lol) and I just never joined a league, etc. and its too late now, im about to be 16...
Were from Florida, but still play here, there are lots of great places to play in NY, join a learn to play hockey/skate class, in 8-10 weeks you can play rec. I have known lots of beginner 16 yr olds, you can still have lots of fun, but I wouldn't count on the NHL for your future...
lol dude..im also from NYC...manhattan...ever heard of chelsea piers?? huge huge sports facility...has a hockey rink, lessons, leagues of all sorts...so much...its hard to miss, especially if uve lived in NYC for a while. Anyway too bad..its been hard for me since i started at 12 but im catching up into varsity...
Yea I am 26 and just started..granted I played when I was a little kid, but this is like beg. all over again...now I AM the one learnig from the 10 year olds who are amazing at the game...bruised ego? hahaha
i know that feels, i put on skates in 8th grade, and Im gonna be a junior, and I'm in a camp with my high school team. It should be a bit easier for you though because the older you are when you start, the quicker you learn and pick up things, as long as you practice. I remember being the only one at my outdoor local rink in -30 degrees working on my shot, it takes effort and commitment to get better
I had this problem. I was playing on the age off 12 in an inlinehockeyclub. I had to quit because I had no driver. I couldn't get on my bycicle, because it was too dangerous outside that lately. and I couldn't go with the bus because I never reached my last bus. Therefor I needed to quit for 3 years. Then I tried again and I just couldn't follow. they were too quick. Nowadays I'm training hard to get back, I stand on my skates and take my stick almost every day. I don't know if this helps.
I need to say this actually. You have the luck to live in america, I live in belgium where only football, tennis and cycling are the favorites off sports.
@Zepman2393 it's never to late m8 i was 15 when starts hockey and i'am now 16 so played about 1 year and i'ts not to late, i mean if you keep practising and love that sport you will be a good player just you need practise it like a hell but it's not problem if you love some much it
@Zepman2393 I'm 23 now and I've felt the same way for years man lol, I always played it when I was a kid and I'm really getting back into it now. I realized my future was crushed when I noticed me and Bobby Ryan (Anaheim Ducks) shared the same birth day. Where did I go wrong in life?!
@Zepman2393 Bobby Ryan is from NY I'm pretty sure. Besides, you can play anywhere. I live in Huntington Beach CA lol, I've been playing my entire life. Best sport to play imo.
@Zepman2393 I started when I was 16,and I had the time of my life playing on multiple championship teams. I still play today 15 years later...it's a sport you can always play and enjoy no matter how old you get.
@Zepman2393 its never to late bro. i just started playing hockey last year when i was 15 and i only play in my high schools spring league . i got my first game on monday
I suck at slap shots, off the ice, on a piece of wood, I'm fine, it's just when I get on the ice it sucks, I can't get it off the ice and I can't get it fast enough, I really need practice, but since hockey's over, I'll have to wait till next season.
you sound like my friend whos name happens to be connor . he has the same problem. im pretty good at slapshots so i have been trying to help him but he just cant seem to take the same movement office to on ice
I have the right movement, I just can't get enough strength. I've been practicing with a few pucks on some old tiles out in my backyard with an old net, and I've been doing pretty well, let's just hope I can get it right on the ice.
i too struggled for a while w/ my slapshot but u rlly dont need strength...im 14 & 110 lbs but i can still shoot it pretty hard..u need to shift weight, bend ur back knee, hit the ice before the puck, & just practice..if ur really hockey crazy like me id suggest gettting fake ice & maybe a net
the thing is, back in the 90's all players were playing with a wooden stick, nowadays you don't even get to see one. the benefit off these shafts is that you can have a flex which is lower then the flex of the wooden sticks. I tried it out with my brothere's stick. he has a flex off 77 and I benged it easier then my wooden stick.
Couple questions XD 1. The NHLer showing the slapshot...is this really your youtube account and you replying to people? 2. This is aswell my first year of hockey, I do pretty much everything you say and I have difficulty picking up the puck, as well as speed. Any tips?
Knees slightly bent, body weight will shift, from back foot to front foot, twist torso timing is critical... lower hand will slide up stick shaft nearer the blade, on down stroke untwist begin Bending over torso, (slide back up some while in motion (optional)), hit blade on ice just before puck, lean on the stick shaft enough to create flex, upper hand pulls drag it through completely, dont slow it early! finish with blade tip pointing where you want to send the puck! PRACTICE ALOT, ENJOY
Sticks come in 3 sizes (shaft diameter) Junior, Intermediate & Senior, diffrent flex ratings, blade patterns and lie (angle of blade in refrence to shaft) you should probably pick an intermediate (unless you are strong or weigh 145+), with flex 60-75 to be determined by how much you will need to cut? no taller than your nose, no shorter than chin. with skates on should be flat on ice in hockey position confortably (this is lie and best by feel & same with blade pattern)try diffrent lies!
the best advice i ever got was from a junior player: keep the puck close to your feet and follow through (along with all of the other basic essentials) also dont lift your stick up above your head unless you have enough time, try it
Watch youtube with caution though, Bad info can lead to bad habbits that can be very hard to correct once learned. Although with that said, what works for one person may not work for another, I like unique styles, I attempt to post videos that give quality information that wont cause bad habbit and inspire creativity.

The best things you can do to improve:
practice
understand how it's done and why it works
Of course practice is the best solution, however, by understanding how it works, you can notice why yours doesn't work.
To understand it, the failry simplest way to do it is:
watch good shooters. Again and again and again
If your head has a great photo memory you will end-up adjusting your motion to what it should be and the best of all is that it is automatic!
Simply watch and practice.
