What a classic jazz standard! Ms. Streisand's interpretation is so beautifully performed in a mellow, almost blues-style. She has given a new interpretation to this timesless song. Thanks for this post.
".......for all we know we may never meet again........before you go make this moment sweet again..........". This 1934 song For All We Know has a lot of recorded versions.......I would say Barbara Streisand 's is one of the best.......Remembering 1991 with this movie.
This film, this story, the music of this film... UNFORGETTABLE for me, and Barbra Streisand in 1991, "For All We Know", was the BEST, BEST DIRECTOR!!!
"....we come and go like a ripple on a stream............tomorrow was made for some.......tomorrow may never come.......for all we know......". A 1934 song with a meaningful message. Barbara sang this in 1991.
When I was a poor black child growing up in the projects. Whenever I was alone I would draw the drapes and pull out my secret stash of Barbra Streisand records. She was the my escape from all of the Ugliness that surrounded me;daily. For that I forever grateful to her.
The power of good music raises you above the grey, hopeless tower blocks of life and momentarily stops time. I have closed the curtains and turned up the music many times too and teleported myself somewhere better. Thanks for sharing wayne.
@waynegreer72 She has always been one of my favorites. I love her voice and the words ring soooo true. I know I am an older white woman that grew up in kind of what you would call the country, but she has always been one of the ones to settle the soul.
@Bez1960 In order to be robbed of it, she had to have been nominated for it first. With the likes of Jonathan Demme, Oliver Stone and Ridley Scott nominated, she would have been a nominee just like in 1974, but by no means a winner.
Nevertheless, none of that award mumbo-jumbo takes away from the fact that THE PRINCE OF TIDES is a classic for the ages, and far more memorable than BUGSY and JFK for that matter, and on the same level as BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.
This is a good version. It's not as moving or quite as good to me as Michael Crawfords, which may be the best I've ever heard, but it's not bad either.
Well....if you like this song in particular, listen to Nina Simone's version from 1961. It's a live performance that will blow you away. Do a search... not so polished...and wow. Will always love Barbra.
Thanks for that. I'm thinking about doing this song in a singing contest. Barbra is truely great. I also heard Boris do it here on YOUTUBE. He mimmicked Donny Hathaway very nicely. Beautiful song.
Great song from the movie. If I remember correctly, I think her son, Jason, might have written this. He wrote one of the songs, according to the inside jacket on the CD.
Great song coupled with a great movie. One of Babs all time greatest directing jobs. The academy missed the boat that year in passing over this movie.
Gorgeous video, gorgeous film, mesmorizing music...

The greatest satisfaction comes From wanting what is ours. Desire is a gift, turning Sentences to song.
There is a liberation in The loveliness of flowers.
The miracles most commonplace Are those for which we long.
How beautiful such longing is! The vivid heart of life, The hunger for what cannot be, But is and must be true.
How wonderful I cannot stop, Even as your life-mate, From wanting, needing, yearning for The love I have from you.
Simply MAGNIFICENT!!!!

This is my above all others favourite Barbra movie: brilliant as a psychiatrist, weak as woman and wife and a divien singer!

Barbra does great justice to this song.
My favorite version is by an equally brilliant artist,Billie Holiday from Lady In Satin.

She was robbed of the Oscar for Best Director for this movie. It was a clear snub by the Acadamy. Bastards!

The music was written by J. Fred Coots, the lyrics by Sam M. Lewis. The song was published in 1934.
