@Thespiella I'm Mexican, too (100%) and I love it, too!! You're so right, many over-sensitive people feel like they need to be offended for the other races. I find it irritating, We can speak for ourselves...and we just did! :-)
anyone who finds this video even slightly offensive is so overly sensitive that i question their ability to live a normal life beyond their own front door.... some people have nothing better to do than find something that upsets them and blow it way out of proportion.
but thats whats become of a lot of us..... so overly sensitive that i'm afraid to say "black man" in front of my "african-american" friends for fear of upsetting anybody.
I'm half Mexican. My mom is from Mexico. My mom, my sisters, and I find this hysterically funny. There is nothing really insulting about this. Ok, so Mel is wearing a pancho and sombrero (but at one time Mexican's actually wore those things). Most all of Jack's jokes were self deprecating and were never mean spirited. Mel Blanc's timing was impeccable. This is just a quirky word game sketch. People need to lighten up and stop looking for something that's not there.
After they had done this skit several times over the years, Mel put a twist in it one time. When Benny asked "what's her name", Blanc answered - straight-faced, staring right into Benny's eyes - "Delores". Benny collapsed in hysterics on the floor, and couldn't finish the skit.
Jack and Mel initially did this routine during a satire of "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" on a May 1949 radio show...and the laughs were such that Jack continued to do variations of it with Mel through his TV specials in the late '60s.
Mr.Benny was the perfect straight man & would have been great with any comic you wanted to play off of him. we have lost all the memories & lessons of Vaudeville, it's Personality & Charm never to be reclaimed. How sad...
What a dumb shit. THESE AREN''T "our differences." These are invented culturally exclusive put downs with no basis in reality. I would love to make fun of differences. If I stereotyped you and plastered jokes based on racism you might be offended.
Yup. The culture got away with cultural arrogance as a stance against anything that wasn't home grown, It eliminates a lot of past comedy. I'm old enough to wonder whether I would have laughed at some of this.
Many of the funniest comedy routines are word plays --- this one, Abbott & Costello's "Who's on First" are just a couple. But what makes this skit so hilarious is the audience getting so involved -- anticipating with glee each new question and answer. Mel Blanc --- voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck & rest of the Looney Tune cartoon characters -- on Benny's radio show did the voices for everything from a sputtering, wheezing 1923 Maxwell to an aristocratic English race horse.
Some of the best skits are dialect skits & stereotyped characters. Like it or not, they're based on some truth,& usually done in good taste. Jack Benny was Jewish , a penny pincher & usually the foil in all of these skits. I don't recall Jews being up in arms about it.
Mexicans are offended by this? Not all: I am Mexican (born and raised here), I really know nothing about Jack Benny, and this stuff cracks me up. I looked for this clip for a long time, and now I found it.
Si eres mexicano y te ofendes por esto, trata de madurar. Ya estuvo bueno de la baja autoestima de los mexicanos.
Benny LOVED this routine, which is obvious as he fights not to lose it entirely. The only piece missing from it was the follow-up question to: "Sue?" "Si," which went, "And what does she do for a living?" "Sew." "Sew?" "Si" - at which point, Benny would shout "Now cut that out!" It was a great word gag, requiring a Latino character to establish the foundation for the continuous vowel shift: Si, Sy, Sue, Sew, with variations: Say, Saw, So, etc. Blanc's deadpan delivery topped even Benny's.
The thing about Jack Benny in this sketch is that, even though he is on the constant verge of breaking up, still keeps his timing intact so that the sketch is still funny as it should be. The true definition of genius (and bravo for Mel Blanc, who DIDN'T break up and more than kept up his end of things).
This was the one routine that always cracked Jack up. No matter how many times it was performed, no matter how hard he tried, he could never keep a straight face. It has been parodied many times since by a whole slew of comedy acts and justly so.
Of course Jack would return the favor for Mel by appearing in a Warners short "The Mouse that Jack Built" featuring Jack and the cast as mice They enjoyed working on it and asked for prints of the film as payment.
It wasn't just Mel Blanc who made Jack Benny crack up during a routine. He and Carol Burnett did a routine on his show, and at the end, when they had to look at each other, Carol kept a straight face, while Jack was getting read to break down. BTW, if Jack Benny was so racist, how come he readily employed a black man (Eddie Anderson) and had his character regularly top Benny's character. Is this racist?
We were just discussing this routine at dinner tonight, and I said I bet somebody has put in on YouTube. Sure enough. That Mel Blanc was something, being able to keep a straight face like that, unlike Benny who had to fight to keep from losing it. Thanks for the laughs!
What episode is this particular one from? I saw Jack do it with Mel a bunch of times but I've never seen this one before. He didn't ask what his sister does for a living..."sew" :)
Its amazing how easilly Jack Benny can put a smile on my face with his comedy bits. This is way better than anything put out today. Man, this is true classic comedy and Jack Benny was a true King of comedy.
They were great! Benny was a gentle, lovable soul who made the whole world laugh by portraying a petty miser. Every child (and adult) owes Mel Blanc a debt for those Warner Bros. voices. I miss them both!
where is the jack benny episode where he plays the "Blue Danube" (or some song on his violin) and the lights go on in the neighborhood, Jack Benny ends up in jail...
I think everyone needs to stop and think about the sketch itself.. what are we laughing at? It's not Mexicans specifically. The whole routine is a word gag! It would only work by using a character that was Hispanic which limits you mainly to people from Spain or Latin America. The joke simply would not work with a caucasian character. Mel Blanc was a master at voice characterizations, so he was a natural for this bit.
Will you idiots just leave racial tensions out of this video. Mel blanc and jack benny are HILLARIOUS doing this. God bless both of them for bringing laughter to millions of people!
I've loved the Si, Sy, Sue skit since I was a child. Jack Benny and Mel Blanc a terrific combination. It's comedy at its best. Great Clean Stuff here! I came across the Si, Sy, Sue skit on YT recently, but it was on Carson. What memories!! Thanks for posting!
I think what makes this bit hold up so well is that, like Abbott & Costello did with "Who's On First?", it was never perford the same way twice. There was always a line or two that was taken out, put in, switched around, etc. so that the bit never got stale.
My mother LOVED this routine. I'd have to give her room to fall down on the floor laughing! I love the timing involved, and just to see these two favorites of mine perform. Is this routine racist? Racism means that one race/ethnic group is portrayed as being superior to another. It that's so, how is MB's portrayal racist? BTW, Jack Benny portrayed a man who is in love with money. Jewish stereotypes hold that Jews love money. JB was Jewish. Was he being racist against himself?
I'm forever amazed at how Mel Blanc can keep a straight face throughout the entire sketch while I'm rolling on the floor in convulsions - does it every time! Never gets stale!
Is there another skit with the same Mel Blanc charcater where the tag line is "It's not the same without my brother?" Could someone post that please? Thanks
if u look closely, for the majority of the skit, mel is not looking directly at jack, he appears to be looking beyond jack, which is probably how he kept from cracking up. u can only imagine how many rehearsals and miles of film were needed to get this skit just right to have it aired both on tv and in front of a live audience. Either that, or Mel wanted so bad for the skit to go without a crack up, that he just gathered every bit of composure and just tried his absolute best not to crack up
I always wondered how Mel and Jack kept from laughing during this routine! XD If I was in this routine, I would've had to go through countless rehearsals because I would just keep cracking up. The director probably would eventually give up and call "LUNCH!" XD
Look at Jack try his absolute best to maintain a straight face, and Mel is handling it like a pro, although im sure he was laughing inside, both comedy geniuses of both their day and today
jack benny was not racist at all he was actually one of the first performers have an african american to upstage him. and if you look at his comedy he is the one looking like the fool.
@appleandhoneyspice , He may not have been racist with blacks like you said however, he enjoyed making fun of and mocking mexicans as you can see in this video. To still say that he was not racist is simular ton saying," I am not a racist, i love niggers ."
@lonewatchman , I disagree. I believe that it is people that are untolerant of other people's views and that use adjectives to express their feelings towards them due to a lack of control of their emotions. Those are the people that keep racial tensions boiling. Such as yourself.
@fidelvis - Jack Benny enjoyed making fun of HIMSELF primarily. Think of it: he played a penny-pinching miser - the stereotype of Jewish people. And Benny was JEWISH! So are you trying to say he hated himself as well? All reports state that JB was a warm, humble, friendly NON-PREJUDICED invidivual. And he's one helluva funny man. God rest his soul!
I agree with you. I do NOT think Jack Benny was racist. I'm African American and I like him and Rochester's relationship. I think Jack Benny was looking forward to a day when race would not been an issue and blacks could have other acting roles besides servants. I believe he saw Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson as equal; it was not Jack's fault or Eddie Anderson's fault that they lived during a time of racial inequality. Together, they paved a way for The Cosby Show.
I wish they were alive to know that in 2010 there is a 31 year old who likes the show, and that there is no age or racial barrier. Thank you Jack and Eddie for paving the way for me to have the rights that I have. Much love.
@TEMPmichaelhansen yea ? why ? if this is racist then we might as well all pack up and bury ourselves..if mexicans can't laugh with this they are a sad lot indeed!!
@appleandhoneyspice Not only to have an African American as part of the cast, but according to Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Jack Benny was nothing at all like the character he played on T.V. He was always very generous and a great guy to work for.
This really isn't ethnic humour until the end, in my opinion. He's Mexican to set up the 'si' part of the gag. The end is pretty ethnic, admittedly; I like other versions of this gag better.
These guys are legends, and if you have swallowed the lil pill called PC then you probably wont get this skit..
Its not racist, its funny.. What makes a great comedian is pushing the boundaries, Carlin, Pryor, and Kinison all pushed the boundary and crossed the PC line.
And the reason they had the courage to do so was due to guys like Jack, and Mel that came before...
Jack Benny and Mel Blanc were great friends. They loved to work with each other, and worked well together. You can tell that Benny is having to rub his jaw to keep from smiling and laughing.
It's amazing how Mel always keeps a straightface whenever he and Jack do this skit! Truly classic!

Benny is trying hard not to laugh. There's a video on youtube where Blanc and Benny are talking about this bit with Carson. It's as funny as the bit.

Is there another skit with the same Mel Blanc charcater where the tag line is "It's not the same without my brother?" Could someone post that please? Thanks
chucknpt 1 year ago
if u look closely, for the majority of the skit, mel is not looking directly at jack, he appears to be looking beyond jack, which is probably how he kept from cracking up. u can only imagine how many rehearsals and miles of film were needed to get this skit just right to have it aired both on tv and in front of a live audience. Either that, or Mel wanted so bad for the skit to go without a crack up, that he just gathered every bit of composure and just tried his absolute best not to crack up
MrFloppy19 1 year ago 3
I always wondered how Mel and Jack kept from laughing during this routine! XD If I was in this routine, I would've had to go through countless rehearsals because I would just keep cracking up. The director probably would eventually give up and call "LUNCH!" XD
MWolfL 1 year ago 2
Look at Jack try his absolute best to maintain a straight face, and Mel is handling it like a pro, although im sure he was laughing inside, both comedy geniuses of both their day and today

jack benny was not racist at all he was actually one of the first performers have an african american to upstage him. and if you look at his comedy he is the one looking like the fool.
he was the best
appleandhoneyspice 2 years ago 63
@appleandhoneyspice , He may not have been racist with blacks like you said however, he enjoyed making fun of and mocking mexicans as you can see in this video. To still say that he was not racist is simular ton saying," I am not a racist, i love niggers ."

@fidelvis
Get over yourself. It's thin skinned PC losers like you that keep racial tensions boiling.
lonewatchman 1 year ago
@lonewatchman , I disagree. I believe that it is people that are untolerant of other people's views and that use adjectives to express their feelings towards them due to a lack of control of their emotions. Those are the people that keep racial tensions boiling. Such as yourself.
fidelvis 1 year ago
@fidelvis LOL, you hypocrite, you're not being tolerant of my views.

@fidelvis since when is mexican a race? its always people who throw around the word racist that dont have a clue what a race is...
mysticx0 1 year ago 2
@fidelvis Jack Benny was beloved by everyone he met and worked with. I bet the same is not true for you.
mikedaugherty 1 year ago
@fidelvis You're the one dropping the n word here.
rockandroll4evermore 1 year ago
@fidelvis - Jack Benny enjoyed making fun of HIMSELF primarily. Think of it: he played a penny-pinching miser - the stereotype of Jewish people. And Benny was JEWISH! So are you trying to say he hated himself as well? All reports state that JB was a warm, humble, friendly NON-PREJUDICED invidivual. And he's one helluva funny man. God rest his soul!
WSenator1 1 year ago 2
@appleandhoneyspice

Much love.

@appleandhoneyspice Not only to have an African American as part of the cast, but according to Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Jack Benny was nothing at all like the character he played on T.V. He was always very generous and a great guy to work for.

Could you possibly upload this entire episode? It's one of the best in the series.

Mel looks like half the population of my old neighborhood outside DC. I had to move because I don't speak Spanish. I speak English.
Thorum13 2 years ago
This really isn't ethnic humour until the end, in my opinion. He's Mexican to set up the 'si' part of the gag. The end is pretty ethnic, admittedly; I like other versions of this gag better.

One version of this skit (Jack and Mel have done this many times) ends with Jack asking what Sue does for a living. Mel's response? "Sew."

Aha ha! That's way more funnier! thanks for telling me that. This is such a funny skit they do.
JeffZHigs1 2 years ago
@shuboy05 They do it on the Carson show, another YouTube clip.
mbabist01 2 years ago
@JeffZHigs1 Or, Jack could have asked "How old is she"? Mel could reply "Six". lol

Shut up & wake up all you pc zombies...

Jack Benny and Mel Blanc were great friends. They loved to work with each other, and worked well together. You can tell that Benny is having to rub his jaw to keep from smiling and laughing.
