The only reason that the TDI engine won Le Mans is that it's turbocharged ! Put a turbo in a petrol engine car and then the diesel is simply blown away, and all that torque diesel owners love actually come's from the turbo

Not mentioning the initial difference in price and the fact that diesel engines are more expensive to maintain. And for the record, i had a diesel, 2.5 V6 passat and i got about 7 litres from it, not 4l

it goes 4 liters/100km. I use it as my work car, so i count every liter. turbo works fine.

for all you that dispute TDi VS Petrol -> I drive a vw golf mk4 TDi 90hp (quite small). Diesel engines accelerate hard from low rpm's, the turbo enters at 1800 rpm when doing sport drive i change ghears at 3750 rpm where is the maximum power of my car. With the petrol engines .... you go to 6000 rpm's but ....you just start to feel the power at 3000 ... . All of you that say diesel engines are not good for raceing are talking about the 90' models -> diesels have improved very much since then

Torque is number (about TDI often high number) so owners TDI say´s: "Torque is important and more important than horse power." And this is biggest lie. 99% racing cars employs petrol engine. WHY??? Because petrol engine is better. He´s much more usable´s RPM and usable RPM and gradual power is more important then torque in TDI. TDI has draugh only 2000 rpm (usually 1800-3500 RPM, when taking turbo), after him dies... This is facts... TDI is only more economic beyond petrol engine...

and usually, tdi owners don't race, and on the street it really helps , i've driven both

TDI won in Le mans... It´s true... Because in Le Mans is important number of laps in race, so existing Audi R10 and Peugeot 908 HDI... TDI and HDI are economic engine (40 l/100 km in race) and this is fine, because petrols racing engines (Aston DBR, Corvette C6R,...) they need 80-100l/100 km and this is large difference... Diesel engine´s are practically in normal ride... For sport ride and sense is better petrol engine...

Cukroot, Diesel powered cars won in Sebring as well. In the first year of the American LeMans Series, Audi TDI, they were undefeated and qualified on the front row. The longest race on the AMLS calendar is 12 hours (Sebring) The Diesel technology has become viable for racing as well.

Nop... its 140hp. They didn't have the 170hp version we actually should have at that time... :( 140hp is just enough, but not any racer in high speeds. But it's soon ready for a car change I think, so I think there will be a bit more power in the next one :)

I am thinking about buying the 2.0 TDI , but after reading some reviews on the on the automatic gearboxes I am a bit hesitant, one review was a company who bought 5 Passats with the DSG gearbox over 6 months and all delophed a major gearbox failure with the Mechatronic unit failing in each case which cost £1000 parts alone plus labour, anyone experiencing the same problem

HAHA! i got the 2TDI DSG and you are totally wrong! The diesel is amaizingly good and the gearbox is wonderfull ! it shifts even faster then manual^^ and as diesel you get all HP at lower rpm and the torque is great thing!

Nice car. Here in the US, we have much more limited options. We wanted a TDI wagon, but had to settle for a Jetta SW, which is considerably smaller. Passat TDI wagons were only available for one model year (2005) and in very limited numbers. The ones that are available used are sold at a premium price.

Er virkelig drag i 2literen med turbodiesel ja! Vi kryssa av det meste med et par ting som vi angrer på at vi ikke tok er solar-soltak, kupévarmer og distanseregulerer... Kjøpte også bilen før avgiftskuttet så hadde vi kjøpt da hadde vi nok hatt alt;) Kan ikke bruke alle pengene på bil heller :p

Not exactly automatic.. It's a double clutch automatic. So it's much much quicker than an average automatic. I know the new GTI w/ DSG is actually faster than the MT.

Yup the DSG boxes are faster 0-60 than the Manual and this was tested on Fifth Gear by guys that wanted to prove the manual would be faster!
