Hey Al, how many Dead Hang Pull-ups (like you did in the video) can you do, and how many can you do that are like your brother did? Just curious on the difference, because the other form looks "fine" as you said. Thanks. "We're working out!" makes me laugh so much lol.
Al, I notice that neither of you wear any type of gloves. So what's the deal about blisters or calluses? How long does it usually take for one's hands to toughen up sufficiently for that to no longer be an issue? Thanks.
@alkavadlo Found & read the blog post -- thanks. May I venture one more question in connection w/the above video? A former special ops guy I know (in fabulous shape, as are you) claims that true dead hang pull-ups - as opposed to nearly dead hang - are actually not good/smart to do (though he can do several). You've probably heard this, and I would appreciate reading your thoughts. Not taking his side, I'm just asking. Thanks.
@pnutbutrncrackers make sure your using a good grip where your not pinching the skin of your hand with the bar. calluses will always build up to protect your hands and you can remove them safely for aesthetics purposes. or just leave them if you don't care
danny is cheating!! hehe, the first guy did it great, those dead hangs are fucking tuff.. regulars are tough as well.. but its 10 times harder when u do them without motion from ur last pull ups
great form on the pull ups! nice and controlled. but i do have a question/comment.
i have to wonder... for the purpose of the exercise, doesn't going to a full dead hang on the pull up take a lot of the tension off of the targeted muscle groups and transfer it to stress on the joints/forearm-strength?
@xabcx Thanks for your comment! Dead hang pull-ups can potentially be stressful to the joints, but I haven't had any issues from them. I think if you have strong, healthy shoulders and you go slowly, it's fine to do them this way.
Good job, good form. I'm not sure why there is so much debate about what a GOOD pull up is. You just have to go all the way up and all the way down without kicking your legs or just dropping yourself on the downphase (controlled lowering). It's very simple, but almost nobody does them correctly. Congrats on being in the top 1%.
Al won, didn't short arm any, perfect form. I don't think you needed to wait that long at the bottom, just locking out your elbows is sufficient. I counted 13 for your bro. Regardless both are very impressive sets. BTW...What's with the jeans? Pretty formal workout gear! Keep it up!
Hey Thanks! We don't usually work out in jeans but this was an impromptu pullup contest and that's just what we both happened to be wearing. As for the pause at the bottom I just wanted to be super strict and show that there was zero momentum being used.

@pnutbutrncrackers I did a blog post about this topic. Do a google search for "Al Kavadlo workout gloves" and it should be easy to find.

@pnutbutrncrackers Yeah I've heard people say that before, but I haven't had any issues from doing deadhang pull-ups.

Super-super strict pull ups, Al. That's how I like to do them, too. Only I don't do so many as you.
