Thanks for that blast from the past. I was only five or six then but I remember the parades were works of art compared to today's. If I'm not mistaken the parade route ended at the fair grounds except then the fair grounds is where the high school is today.
You could have gotten a video of the parade 20 years ago and you couldn't tell it wasn't the most recent one.
Back then, the governor declared La Porte the state capital for a day every Fourth of July. I was marching in the drum line of the Maple City Cadets in that clip. And yes, they DID have a jet fly-over back then.
What a great video. If you have others please post. A much better parade than the current versions these days, of local bands playing on a wagon and the politicians wandering around aimlessly behind a convertible! I bet there was no flyover back then, but in the last few years what else is there really?
Crazy, man. I grew up in Laporte in the 60s - the parade was a big deal every year. It was a great show, esp for a small town. Tom's Standard 'fillin' station' (at the end of the vid) was our family gas stop. Thanks for treat - what a gas.
i love lp! my hometown!

It appears La Porte used to be a much nicer place! Maybe because everyone moved away?
