Haha, same thing happen to me except the elf bow guy (who was helping me at the time) got really pissed and killed me. I suspect this happens to a lot of people :) I also accidentally stole a horse and the guards killed me 5 times before I finally gave up and just paid the fine. Tip: don't try killing the guards (at least early on) they are pretty tough.
