wouldn't it be easier to peel the lower 1/3 without snapping it off, and then just cooking the whole thing?

I always hate to throw away that end, too!

I'm going to try peeling it without snapping it off next time and see if my family notices.

It's funny (and eye opening) to see how different people look at things differently. Yes, guess it would be easier to peel before snapping. Only concern...you may peel off more than you need to, but if you don't mind...sounds like a great idea!
