I was at that game and the ref threw the flag after going over to where the doctors were huddled around the player. An injury is not necessarily a penalty. football is rough. Ware kept his head up. Listen to the anouncers. Head up, clean hit. Think of it this way, try to tackle someone without your head being the forward-most part of your body. Not really possible. This is why legal head to head contact happens in football all the time. When a defender keeps his eyes up but because the runner is at his height, their helmets collide, it is dangerous, but not a penalty. Spearing is what refs should be looking for, not face to face.

This is an example of "Act like you've been there before." If him and the rest of the defense hadn't "celebrated" the hit, the flag wouldn't have been thrown. Sandeman was out cold before he even hit the ground, and when you saunter around nodding your head like you're the shit, you aren't going to get the benifit of the doubt.

However, the classless manor in which Ware taunted a player that was knocked out cold on the ground deserved a flag. Had the refs made that call in the first place, I think there would be about 600 less comments on this video.

Ware does indeed lower his helmet, but his facemask makes contact with Sandeman's shoulder–there is ZERO helmet to helmet contact. Pause the live shot and you will see, the downfield replay angle does not afford you a good view of the contact.

Also, Iowa fans I've met are a nice bunch of people. Made tailgating last year lots of fun in EL, and travel well.

Ware knew he had enough momentum to not have to worry about wrapping the guy up. he kept his head up, led with his arms and shoulder and leaned into the hit in a perfectly legal fashion. when the ball carrier and tackler are both upright, keeping their heads up, incidental head to head contact will almost always happen and almost never get called.
