@captbob1834 This band makes me proud to say that I'm a Jersey Girl!! (don't live there anymore, lost the accent...BUT, can I confess that I MISS it???? (sshhhhh.....don't tell anyone I said that!) ^_~
They are totally awesome live! They are great with their fans too after their shows. There was a clip on here from Saturday Night Live doing "The Blues Before and After" circa late 80's, but it disappeared. Don't know what happened to it. I guess Saturday Night live was going to miss a few pennies instead of allowing some fans to enjoy some great ass Rock and Roll. Pat tore up the lead on that which was surprissing since Jimmy usually does that stuff.
Underrated greatness indeed. I saw them last year (2009) and they were terrific. DInizio was very gracious and involved the crowd. Jim played guitar with an effortless brilliance that reminded me of Joe Walsh, and their new bassist is a charming wild man. Now if we could just edit Dennis Miller out of this clip......
I can just picture some coke-head record executive back in the '80's sitting in his 14th floor office finding some tiddly issue with this band and side-lining them from the promotional money the record companies have at ready to bestow on their 'chosen ones'. Well, maybe the Smithereens had a better time of it after all. Going BIG isn't always a blessing. They appear happy & drug-free. I hope so.
@boomer1954ful Werd. Drugs are bullshit. The music is the drug. And they seem to have done quite well for themselves on their three decade adventure, and in their own way, have found a happiness that other bands only wish they could obtain.
As for execs, I've met a few of them, and they're nasically all the same, drug fueled losers who think they're God when it comes to who makes it in the business and who dosen't. You wanna throw them out of that 14th floor window...
isnt a band today that can touch these guys, except for themselves.......pat can out write and out sing anybody out there, and jim is my favorite guitar player.
I don't know what you are talking about not being known in New Jersey ? The Smithereens are very WELL known in New Jersey and all over the country for that matter. People know them and their songs cause they were huge at the end of the 80's and early 90's and were all over MTV at that time. If you go see them now they still are one of the best rock bands out there !
Damn right...it's just that I have actually heard some people say "who are they"? and like you, it suprises me that more people say they don't know who they are.
I guess it happens, but make no mistake, the Smithereens are New Jersey's prodigal sons, and their music speaks of TRUE rock and roll...straightforward, honest, no bullshit rock and roll.
Babjak can make a Gibson SG sing too, man, he was WAILING away in this video!
The liner notes in their "best of" album says they have "hooks a mile wide." That's so true. Gotta love these guys. Even today they can still bring it in concert.
What suprises me, as a native New Jersey boy, is how many other NJ folk still have NOT heard of the Smithereens. I mean, these guys are rock and roll legends and some people are like, "who are they again"?
There again, with the highest property taxes in the country, and some of the worst politicians, it's a wonder we Jersey folk have time to consider other things at all..
The Smithereens are the best kept secret musical weapon New Jersey has in it's arsenal! Straight up and straightforward rock and roll with a touch of hard rock!
Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, MOVE OVER! The Smithereens are in town and they ain't leaving any time soon! \m/
" you told me baby , you had time to kill , then you tossed me out like an overdue bill " great band and i never tire of hearing them or pats solo stuff !
I've seen hundreds of bands over 30 years come down to Australia (Jethro Tull, '74 was the best if you want to know). And to my eternal regret there are two monstrously great and criminally under-rated bands that NEVER FUCKING MADE IT HERE!!!! The almighty Smithereens and my second fave band of all time, Blue Oyster Cult. Oh man what I wouldn't have given to see those two live but they are both still rockin' and the epitome of unspoilt, play-cos-you-love-it rock and roll. Tour forever boys !!!
I remember watching this live. Miller had already been cancelled and this was like the next to last night of the show. Such a douche bag, I can't imagine why his show got axed.
jimmy IS a badass! im going to go see them tomorrow night, and will stand in my traditional smithereens spot, right in front of jim. they really are the most underappreciated band ever.
I remember seeing this live so this is fantastic. The Smithereens are SO under-rated. The band was great on the show but Miller was...I "think" 3 of the guys are still with the band but not sure...
Smithereens are true power pop. I really don't "get" Big Star and the like. This has got the crunch, the hooks and the jangle that supposedly defines power pop.
Miller had the best sound of any talk show musical segment. The appearances of Spirit and Mountain on the Dennis Miller show were magic.
Miller... what a DORK. He just hated the fact that THEY upstaged him on his own show!! hahahaha. What a ROCKIN' performance!!!!! WOW. Thank you for posting this!!
Also (and I must always mention this), they are some of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Very, very good to their fans.

I remember when this track came out in Australia and I was instantly captured by its chorus, hooks and just a great party track.
Sad that they didn't become an international hedlining act. Still, highly underrated.
