The original documentary footage is better with the sounds of running water and the slow and gentle instrumental music of Fred Frith. I find this music distracting and mildly irritating in addition to silencing the natural sounds of the documentary. I recommend the original DVD to all.
Hi I'm an art teacher looking for video clips to introduce Goldsworthy's work This is the best quality video response i've found yet on you tube. Thanks !
There is absolutely zero ecological impact - when the tide comes in, or the wind blows, the artwork is returned to it's original constituents. He takes no materials with him, he only uses what he finds at the site - his pigments are ground rocks, or petals or leaves. That is the ultimate beauty of his art - dust to dust, nothing lasts...
Whenever u move material around u impact the land. That's why parks ask that u not take rocks or other items w u. Removing (to sea) a large amount of wood removes nutrients from the soil and removing (stacking) rocks on a beach contributes to erosion. Also picking out or moving rocks or leaves, etc. alters + deteriorates the natural beauty of a place for the next visitor. However, n this guy's case, I think the reverence he spreads for the land outweighs his small individual ecological impact.
Mucking about, is that what you call it. WHY! everyone is to dam sensitive? you have China with 1.3 Billion people becoming an industrial superpower and your worried about his mucking around? haahahaaahahahaahahahahahahahaahahaha
Obviously, I commented on the artist's tampering with seemingly pristine wilderness areas because that was the subject of the video. Had it been a video on the runaway industrialization of China and India, I would have commented on that. Now, run along and fuck yourself, you fascist cocksucker.
It's like a beaver building a damn. He doesn't use anything artificial like chemical glues or cement. He is being apart of nature and its ecology rather then destroy it like humans usually do with their buildings.
No, it's not like a beaver at all. Beaver behavior has evolved in tune with their environment over millions of years. He might be mimicking animal behavior, but he hasn't a freaking clue what the ramifications of his actions are, and neither do any of you. You're all making wild assumptions without a shred of data to back them up.
Is a stack of rocks and a pile of wood so bad compared to the ecological ramifications of high rise buildings, cement parking lots, and bulldozers taking down rain forrests to make hamburgers? The computers we are all using to make these comments are made of plastics which become waste. Your enjoying all the benefits of human destruction and your getting on this artists case for being ecologically damaging? Atleast his intentions are to open our eyes to nature.
i dont know why you have 3 thumbs up. You know what I hate, when people just automatically assume that you're taking drugs if you're able to express yourself in ways no one would imagine.
dude chillax, It was a joke. I KNOW he doesnt take any drugs. And I know that he just has a unique way of communicating with the art and the materials he uses. Its almost as if he can talk to the stones and other things he uses.
is it really that funny after you hear it for the millionth time. It seems no one can think of anything original lately. It's such an easy thing to say.....oh he's taking drugs. Sorry, but I don't think it's funny anymore, when people would rather say something like that, than comment on his work
Ok I see what you are saying but, this is youtube comments, I think there is nothing wrong with trying to get a laugh out of ANY video. If I met Andy Goldsworthy himself, I would not make stupid jokes but I would compliment him and ask question about his work. OR if HE HIMSELF uploaded this video, I would not have said that.
So now you understand why I would say such an "unoriginal joke"?
One more thing, typing "Keep your mouth shut" to someone who just TYPED their opinion without needing to open their mouth, seems a bit stupid as well as abrasive, no?
It is sure, but you know that guy at every gathering of people who expresses those opinions that nobody is really interested in hearing, opinions that are usually in contention with everyone else....
Actually, I'm almost certain as well that a song based around drug use, "K-hole", is to ketamine what drunk is to alcohol. It's also used profane language. Now, myself, on both these topics, am not personally offended nor really care per se. But I think there's an extremely likely chance this artist wouldn't appreciate his art being mixed with pro-drug obscene messages. And this is coming from an obscene drug user, just an intellectually honest one.
"Actually, I'm almost certain as well that a song based around drug use ("K-hole" is to ketamine what drunk is to alcohol) wouldn't be supported by the artist."
Messed up my first sentence, should've read that way :)
When did I say I "hate it"? I'm stating the obvious. It's very likely the maker of this art would not agree with the song placed along side it, and in my opinion that makes this video needlessly controversial. Why not use a song that is entirely based around drug use? Common sense is hard to find these days.
Thank you so much for such a wonderful overview of Goldsworthy's work.. The music, I must admit, is not my favorite.. I just feel it stand apart from the video instead of complimenting it... Nevertheless, a pleasure..
For the music, it can be the lyrics which are not really adapted to the video, but I'm french and I don't understand everything because I don't speak english very well...But I like so much the music and that's for it I chose this song.
I saw the entire film "Rivers and Tides" at a theater years ago and it was glorious, but even though this music must have been in the original film I either don't remember it, or it didn't stand out as harsh as it does to me now....it hurts my hearing, but not my eyes.
