I wanted to ask you, what gun club are you affliated with? I live in anniston, and I can't find a local gun club that the CMP will recognize in order to purchase an M1.
@BigSean1992 i'm dying to get a garand and would really like to buy it straight out of military surplus. So i'll have to do some training inorder to become a member (i think that's how it works) How much does a surplus garand cost?
@tehatemachine google CMP. it is the first thing that comes up under "odcmp.c..o..m.." on the left side in the blue go down to 'sales' then go down to 'eligibility requirements' that tells you everything. you dont really have to train for anything, for me my membership in CMP affiliated org was with the Garand Collectors Association for 25 dollars. and my handgun carry permit was my firearms activity. everything is pretty simple, hope this helped.
@BigSean1992 it certainly did! I found the prices on surplus garands, A really good one was like a thousand bucks on their site plus shipping. Defiantly worth the money to, Especially if you want to protect your liberty and freedom. There are alot of thugs appearing up in my area due to califronias repeated failure in welfare and social government aid coupled with failing public schools that produces impoverished criminal type people.
@BigSean1992 I'd rather die from starvation than to fall into the hands of a welfare system :D and I may be venturing off to far on the main topic. But that's just how i feel, Self responsibility, and Obeying laws that are constitutional (AB144 is not constitutional so therefore i will not follow it nor intentionally try to break it infront of everyone) I have a right to defend myself! God bless the U.S.A and our founding fathers!
Really sucks that I want an autoloader shotgun, single action open top revolver and a .30-30 or .357/.38 spl lever action rifle and someone on the gun forum bumped a thread on CMP Garands =/ Now I want to use the bulk of my tax return on one! Really cool that they can ship these to your home, no FFL transfer b.s.

Oh!.........after a bit more reading, I would clearly place my $400 M-1 purchased 20 years ago at "SPECIAL GRADE", the finish is 100% on wood and parkerized metal, really turns heads of other shooters at the range when I uncase and push in a clip. The wood is very light in color and highly polished.
Got a call from a good friend who was in Alabama visiting family, the day before he went to buy 2 Garands, he was kind enough to offer to pick one up for me. However I came across a Springfield manufactured piece (Serial # indicated 1945 date) 20 years ago at a Civil War Show in Baltimore, complete w/ sling and cleaning kit in butt . He asked for $400...........shoots great, best $400 I ever spent.
Thanks for posting video, enjoyed it and reading all the comments.
@TheMarkCherry You can order whichever grade you choose from the CMP and you should feel 100% confident that the rifle will fall within the guidelines of that grade's description. Nothing more nothing less. If you have questions about the necessary paperwork to purchase from the CMP shoot me a PM or email at pkaufer@cox.net

I live in Pennsylvania, around Philadelphia, Please, can you help me man? I need to know if there are things like these for the Garand locally in my state, would you know if there are?
Thanks for the video... I will be packing the kids in the car for my first trip to the CMP South Store on May 27, 2011. I can hardly wait. I am ultimately shopping for a nice shooter M1 Garand, and may also settle on a Kimber since their stock is begining to run low. I really wanted a 1903, but I keep getting shafted on deals... so I will go for the sure deal with the Rusty 82G.
Thanks for posting this video, I will shoot obe very similar and post it to the CMP forums.
I visited the CMP store at Camp Perry Ohio last year during the National Matches. The cost of Garands has been increased to $495 for a Field Grade and $595 for a Service Grade. There are no more Carbines, Krags, 1917's or 1903's. The CMP may release a few 1903 rifles this year. Picked up several sweet rifles.
Also joined a new qualifing club at the store. "The M1 Collectors Club". The membership cost is real low compared to others.
@Iraqveteran8888 I have heard that this gun is about 500 dollars. or in that price range. but as time progresses m1 garands will be scarce and itll soar up to about 1000 plus dollars, say, in 4-5 years from now, what would be the price?
@pyroboys2 in south florida garands are very hard to find, I have seen a few enfields, Kar 98s, an Arisaka, I myself have an Arisaka type 99, I have seen M1 carbines, in local gunshops, but the only time I have ever seen garands, they were from $1800 to $2900,
@pyroboys2 If you can get an M1 for $700, grab it. It is a better investment than gold. I bought a Garand for $400 about 20 years ago. Now I wish that I had bought all 10 that day.
@pyroboys2 CMP civilian marksmanship program offers mil surplus firearms at discounts but you have to meet certain criteria to purchase from them. Check out their website.
@pyroboys2 It's because its the CMP. You won't find a Garand for less than $700 from a Private seller or a gun show or shop etc. CMP is by far the cheapest way to get a Garand. PM me if you need help figuring out how to buy from them as it can be rather complicated, but very much worth the hassle! I love my CMP M1
A friend of mine got a Korean War-issued M1 for $700 and says I can get one also when I get the money for it. Does CMP have better deals? I'm nowhere near Alabama....
Im from Colorado if I drive their can I buy 1 or 2 30.06 grands or do I have to send them to a gun shop near me? If you know any thing e-me back thank and thanks for the VID it was great
@RoflmaoAtSheepeople You have to be a part of acknowledged organization and they will ship directly to your door. I bet there is a list that will tell you what to join.
I wish I could buy a Garand for that cheap. The cheapest I've ever seen them in Raleigh is 800$ and that's for beat up parts guns. Of course, I've never seen a good deal on a gun in NC.
How do you know it was a lazy Private that scatched the rifle you pointed out in this video? You don't. In fact there are no military personnel involved with these rifles anymore, even the M1s. It's all civilians at the depot level my friend. My Dad worked at the Anniston Army Depot for 24 years after he retired from the Army and hand picked all of the rifles we got when it was still known as the DCM.
im planning on buying a new hunting rifle soon. since most bolt action rifles are well beyond $500, i think i should get an m1. would you recommend a field grade for hunting?
Just a shame you have to be a US citizen to buy from a CMP store. I'd love a few of these for my collection. very informative video all the same, thanks
Hey when you picked up the Mossberg M44 .22 you picked up my rifle my rifle was bought from there and it has the same white spick of white paint on the stock in the same place and then where the reciever is stamped U.S. Property it has the same marks I am 99.9% shure thats the rifle I bought!
Makes me glad I got my c&r. I've already got one M1 (great uncle carried it in the pacific) and whenever I can save the money up, I'm gonna buy one to have as an everyday shooter! Fantastic rifles they are :)
Haha nice bid I live in Alabama and I shoot with cmp I am a air rifle shooter with Shelby county shooting sports in Birmingham al but my team has very close conections with CMP
even though Mauser was faster and easier to reload than 30-40 karg, but the U.S. still won The Spanish American War. That a good portion of the volunteers were already expert shots and gunfighters.
I got my M1 Garand from the CMP South Office Yesterday. I bought the Service Grade. I can't speak for everyone but I can tell you this is a really great Rifle. The CMP did a great job picking it out.
If you have not had the opportunity to get your CMP M1 I suggest you do so. The whole experience was outstanding.
is it recomended to buy a field grade or a service grade in terms for a shooter. and how does one go about buying an M1 because i live in CA. im an NRA member and a California Rifle and Pistol asociation. what other things do i need to do in order to buy one. i am 19 years old and obviously a U.S citizen. i really want an M1. very good prices here they go for 1,000 here in CA.
Excellent video; you gave a great tour of the CMP sales office. Clearly you know what you're talking about. There are a lot of Yayhoos out there making videos that don't really know whereof they speak...but you do man.
@hangemhigh2000 I still put out quite a few videos as time permits. I try to keep things equally revolved around handloading, shooting, and gunsmithing. I put up a 10 part series on doing a 922r conversion on a Saiga 12 Shotgun, etc.
I just uploaded a video about the basic of buying AKs as we speak.... ;)
WOW! that place is heaven, i didnt see any m14(m1a) rifles, but those garands looked sweet. Id like to get a 762 rifle, but il stick to my DCM Bushy for now. thanks for the vid.
It's surprising how similar the Krag looks to the m1903 Springfield... I went to a gun show this weekend and failed a few times seeing what I thought was a Springfield like mine, only to discover it was a Krag instead
Why don't this CMP outfit sell to Americans? Or did Congress intentionally set it up to sell only to elitist? "Civilian Marksmanship Program" isn't that some form of socialism. Great video but CMP SUCKS. Socialism SUCKS! How un American is that? You must belong to some club. NRA isn't good enough for them. Sorry, this elitism just pisses me off.
Was just there and got a Kimber 82 and mucho cans of 30'06. Years ago, before the store was opened, you could volunteer to work at the CMP and get to cherry pick rifles (my dad and I volunteered together - he's USMC Viet Vet and retired military). I did that and got a SA '03 and a HRA M1 that are just beautiful and the barrels gauge at pretty much new. What I like now is that the CMP cleans the cosmoline from the rifles, but it also takes part of the fun away. The CMP staff were very helpful.

also im thinking of getting one of them garands from cmp. but im wondering how bad the Service Grade M1 Garand were. i mean u probably looked down the barrels and whats not. i mean id love to put out 900 on the Special Grade M1 Garand. but if its still in good enough condition i wont. or should i just put out for the special grade?
wait. we had Springfield but the army didnt want to use them because they thos that our boys would just burn through ammo.(what i heard on the history channel on i think weaponology. might have been the military channel)
@budgray18 I think your thinking about the fact that when semi-autos first came out the military was concerned that soldiers would over use ammo. In the end they adopted them anyways and it helped win WW2.
@Mrcaffinebean honestly i dont remember what i was going on about, i know it was about the Spanish American war. about us to use the trap door or the Springfield bolt action. but other than that i forgot what i was goin on about
Thanks for posting this. Being in AZ I have to order and deal with the luck of the draw. I've been mostly happy with the M1'a and Carbine CMP has sent me. The muzzles on mine have been just fine:)
If your not CMP eligible, is there still a way to buy a gun from them? I would love to get a Krag or Garand. I'm about 7 hours south of Anniston AL here in North Florida.

So many of those Garands came from defunct Military Academies.
I went to Oklahoma Military Academy.
The student population (enrollment) varied between 300-400 Cadets.
Each of us had a Garand in perfect working condition.
Well kept and maintained.
Most of them in far better condition than the ones in this vid.
I wondered where they went when the school closed.
Now I know.

would you recommend a field grade-service grade M1 garand? because I really want to get one from CMP. thanks!

Im new to guns and i was just wondering how much kick do these things have
alexsmith117 1 year ago
@alexsmith117 not much at all. the rifle wieghs 12 pounds. my ten year old cousin shoots them
argentummolonlabe 1 year ago
@alexsmith117 Yeah the gas operation and weight, lower the recoil alot, making the rifle shoot with silky smooth, predictable recoil.

im planning on buying a new hunting rifle soon. since most bolt action rifles are well beyond $500, i think i should get an m1. would you recommend a field grade for hunting?

Just a shame you have to be a US citizen to buy from a CMP store. I'd love a few of these for my collection. very informative video all the same, thanks

even though Mauser was faster and easier to reload than 30-40 karg, but the U.S. still won The Spanish American War.

@M1ASniper Congratulations, isn't the CMP awesome? I have a Garand and a carbine from them and I am very happy with both.

Excellent video; you gave a great tour of the CMP sales office. Clearly you know what you're talking about. There are a lot of Yayhoos out there making videos that don't really know whereof they speak...but you do man.

hangemhigh2000 1 year ago
@hangemhigh2000 I still put out quite a few videos as time permits. I try to keep things equally revolved around handloading, shooting, and gunsmithing. I put up a 10 part series on doing a 922r conversion on a Saiga 12 Shotgun, etc.
I just uploaded a video about the basic of buying AKs as we speak.... ;)

The CMP staff were very helpful.

wait. we had Springfield but the army didnt want to use them because they thos that our boys would just burn through ammo.(what i heard on the history channel on i think weaponology. might have been the military channel)
budgray18 1 year ago
@budgray18 I think your thinking about the fact that when semi-autos first came out the military was concerned that soldiers would over use ammo. In the end they adopted them anyways and it helped win WW2.
