  • I am giving tom a downpayment next week for a six with a redwood top. HUZZAH!

  • Hey Ed, Have you thought about doing a book on playing chords on the bass?

  • @chrispurchase - yes I have, but my publisher (Hal Leonard) believes that it's too much of a niche topic. Not enough interest for them to print one. I think they are probably right, and besides... Mike Dimin has a book out about chords, so there is an alternative.

  • @BassGuitarMag A book on jazz-style bass chords would be the best thing ever.

  • @squiresuzuki - Well, if you can find a trove of old Bass Player magazines, I did two articles on that subject under the title Piccolo bass. November 2001 and Feb. 2002.

  • Wow! You actually found an instrument that surpassed your Zon TJ6?

  • @JAldwin - It's not a matter of surpassing the Zon, in many ways, this bass does not. But in others ways, I simply prefer it. With the Clement, I fine tuned the dimensions a bit - the string spacing, the pickup placement, how it hangs on the strap. And, ultimately I discovered that in spite of all the advantages it offers, graphite does not have the sound I'm looking for.

  • How's the fretwork? I'm thinking about having a 6 built and Tom is at the top of the list.

  • Hi Ed!.

I very like the sound of Fender. I plan to start to play; which model would you recommand?

    Thank you,

    Jean-Charles

  • Hey Ed, Do you get to keep the basses you review??

  • @zx45zx - Well, this particular bass is one I bought, it wasn't really a review. But I have bought some of the review instruments when I really liked them. They don't let me just keep them.

  • I see a G&L Tribute box in the background, will you be reviewing a G&L Tribute bass?

  • @bassistxx - That box was for the G&L JB Rustic bass that I reviewed, it was the wrong box.... but the review is online already. I also reviewed a G&L tribute a few years back. Check my videos, it's there.

  • Is it me or do I hear a chorus pedal in there?

Great sound from that 6 stringer though!

  • @GenericNameWoo - Yes, Digitech Bass Multi-Chorus

  • @BassGuitarMag

Awesome. I have one of those.

    Thanks for the reply!

  • That's the tone I've been looking for on my solos! Something my current basses can't achieve.

Ed, when are you gonna review the Shuttle12? waiting for that. Gonna buy one soon. either the shuttle 12 or GBE750's.

  • @klbassify - I reviewed the Shuttle 2 years ago, look in my videos.

  • @BassGuitarMag I only saw the shuttle 9.0 and 6.0's. Looking at the ShuttleMax12 you are using with the lightwave SL.

  • @klbassify - I will be reviewing the Max 12 with an Uber Bass 212 soon.

  • @BassGuitarMag That's great Ed, looking forward to that review! (:

  • Beautiful bass, and fantastic playing as usual. Some great instruments Tom Clement builds.

  • I was about to ask why there was so much reverb in that room until you listed the "gear used" xD

  • Super cool, thanks for posting that, Mr Friedland!

  • Nice Chord workin'. What wood is that Clement made from? Is it neck thru?

  • @13ommer5boc - the body is mahogany and swamp ash, the top is black limba, the neck is mahogany and maple, fretboard ebony. A real hippie sandwich!

  • Great job on that bass! Amazing bass player.

  • just me? or does that look like an elrick logo....? i know it's not, but looks similar!

  • @kyleycoyote1 - it does look similar, but it's the letter C, not E.

  • Fantastic playing and bass man! How could anyone not like this? I loved it!

  • Great...!

  • how's tom clement with fretted instruments? I think his specialty are fretless... how did the fretwork work? well intonated, no buzzing at low action? sounds pretty well in the video

  • what kind of loop equip. did you step on there at :30 ?

  • @wayne1167 - Boss RC2

  • I hope you can make more demos of this thing in the future, And maybe some bass lessons just to hold us over in between the reviews. Just a suggestion ; )

  • @Haydeosmith - I'm getting ready to tape a series of lessons for guitarinstructor (dot) com, you'll be able to get them there for something like $2 per lesson.

  • bummer.. i was hoping it'll be for free

  • sweet Clement...and playing.

  • dude you are awesome on bass. you have a awesome talent on bass.

i hope i can be as good as you man =)

also i want to study at berklee like you =D

  • ed !!!! i got a question ?? ¿you got to buy every bass you test or you just test this basses ? sorry for my english... im from chile

  • @21642164 - No, I don't have to buy them to test. The company sends it to me to review, and sometimes I buy them after that if I like it (and can afford it!).

  • Dude, you are the sickest.

  • How's this compare the the Bongo?

  • @Haydeosmith - It's very different tonally - the Clement is darker, with a well articulated mid range. The Bongo has a little more lows and highs - it sounds like a MM. The biggest difference for me is the dimensions, the Bongo has 18mm string spacing, the Clement has 17. Seems insignificant, but multiply that by 6 strings and it makes a big difference.

  • did you transcribe a lot when you were younger? if so, who did you like to transcribe?

do you miss the environment at Berklee?

  • @subschool5 - I didn't transcribe as much as a lot of people I know, but I did do some Miles, Wayne Shorter, and Wes Montgomery solos. I did do a lot of listening though.

Do I miss Berklee? Sometimes, it was a great experience, but that was 24 years ago... I think leaving there gave me the time and attitude to go out and accomplish something on my own. I might have just coasted if I stayed for a long time.

  • Daaaaaang.

  • That's the best elevator music I ever heard. :)

  • that L&G Tribute box looks promising... any chance that the one with a carved maple top will be reviewed by The Wizard soon?

  • @marihinoBass - That box actually holds a G&L JB Rustic model, and it will be coming up fairly soon.

  • I was playing something a lot like this last night, and my chops were even better than Ed's.....

    ...then I woke up :(

  • sick bass Ed

    great playing as well

  • Dear Santa, for Christmas I would like 10% of the skills Ed has.

    Awesome work, must go practice.

  • @Pablogogo dear santa i would want atleast 1% of his skills and i would be the happiest man in the world

  • отличная джазовая тема

  • Superb job!

I would love to see you play your double bass sometime.

  • @Balladchu He did. I think it was for the Phil Jones suitcase or briefcase, I'm sure it was for a Phil Jones amp, not sure which one.

  • Love it, so smooth !!

  • Very nice, man! Very nice. Congratulations

  • If I ever get another 6er it'll probably be a Tom Clement. Besides that, amazing playing as always! I wish more soloing bassists had your sense of melody. You make solos sound like a little song within a song instead of just a bunch of notes :).

  • Sexy sexy. I was talking about the bass, not you Ed. Although I'm sure women find you very attractive. Look forward to the full review.

  • One of the most rustic basses I've seen you play.

By the way, just bought one of your books on improv. Damn, you know how to make solos sound natural!

  • niiiiiiice!

    how much?

  • @uberbowser - this one goes for around 2K give or take a little.... Not expensive at all for a custom hand made bass!

  • @BassGuitarMag - oops, make that 3K!

  • @BassGuitarMag thats still pretty expensive though ;-;

ill just stick with my squire jazz for now

    haha
