@chrispurchase - yes I have, but my publisher (Hal Leonard) believes that it's too much of a niche topic. Not enough interest for them to print one. I think they are probably right, and besides... Mike Dimin has a book out about chords, so there is an alternative.
@squiresuzuki - Well, if you can find a trove of old Bass Player magazines, I did two articles on that subject under the title Piccolo bass. November 2001 and Feb. 2002.
@JAldwin - It's not a matter of surpassing the Zon, in many ways, this bass does not. But in others ways, I simply prefer it. With the Clement, I fine tuned the dimensions a bit - the string spacing, the pickup placement, how it hangs on the strap. And, ultimately I discovered that in spite of all the advantages it offers, graphite does not have the sound I'm looking for.
@zx45zx - Well, this particular bass is one I bought, it wasn't really a review. But I have bought some of the review instruments when I really liked them. They don't let me just keep them.
@bassistxx - That box was for the G&L JB Rustic bass that I reviewed, it was the wrong box.... but the review is online already. I also reviewed a G&L tribute a few years back. Check my videos, it's there.
how's tom clement with fretted instruments? I think his specialty are fretless... how did the fretwork work? well intonated, no buzzing at low action? sounds pretty well in the video
I hope you can make more demos of this thing in the future, And maybe some bass lessons just to hold us over in between the reviews. Just a suggestion ; )
@Haydeosmith - I'm getting ready to tape a series of lessons for guitarinstructor (dot) com, you'll be able to get them there for something like $2 per lesson.
@21642164 - No, I don't have to buy them to test. The company sends it to me to review, and sometimes I buy them after that if I like it (and can afford it!).
@Haydeosmith - It's very different tonally - the Clement is darker, with a well articulated mid range. The Bongo has a little more lows and highs - it sounds like a MM. The biggest difference for me is the dimensions, the Bongo has 18mm string spacing, the Clement has 17. Seems insignificant, but multiply that by 6 strings and it makes a big difference.
@subschool5 - I didn't transcribe as much as a lot of people I know, but I did do some Miles, Wayne Shorter, and Wes Montgomery solos. I did do a lot of listening though.
Do I miss Berklee? Sometimes, it was a great experience, but that was 24 years ago... I think leaving there gave me the time and attitude to go out and accomplish something on my own. I might have just coasted if I stayed for a long time.
If I ever get another 6er it'll probably be a Tom Clement. Besides that, amazing playing as always! I wish more soloing bassists had your sense of melody. You make solos sound like a little song within a song instead of just a bunch of notes :).
I am giving tom a downpayment next week for a six with a redwood top. HUZZAH!

Hey Ed, Have you thought about doing a book on playing chords on the bass?

@BassGuitarMag A book on jazz-style bass chords would be the best thing ever.

Wow! You actually found an instrument that surpassed your Zon TJ6?

How's the fretwork? I'm thinking about having a 6 built and Tom is at the top of the list.

That's the tone I've been looking for on my solos! Something my current basses can't achieve.
Ed, when are you gonna review the Shuttle12? waiting for that. Gonna buy one soon. either the shuttle 12 or GBE750's.
klbassify 1 year ago
@klbassify - I reviewed the Shuttle 2 years ago, look in my videos.

@BassGuitarMag I only saw the shuttle 9.0 and 6.0's. Looking at the ShuttleMax12 you are using with the lightwave SL.

@13ommer5boc - the body is mahogany and swamp ash, the top is black limba, the neck is mahogany and maple, fretboard ebony. A real hippie sandwich!
