@mlpond4 See below. The song is by Lesley Duncan. Yes, Elton John was one of the first singers to cover it, but it was one of the very few songs he recorded not written for him or by Bernie Taupin.
Elton John played keyboards on Lesley's first album, Sing Children Sing, and she sometimes sang as his backing vocalist -- including duetting with him on the live version of this song at the RFH in 1974.
This lady swept the world with her distinctive voice in the 60s but few people knew who she was, including me. I guess she put love and marriage first. On a purely commercial level, Sergio Mendes took decades to recover from her departure. Her solo efforts deserved to be better known - a seemingly effortless great jazz voice.
@zoodden Yes, it's an Elton John song (from Tumbleweed Connection), and Lesley Duncan wrote it (and has her own version), but this is Lani Hall, formerly of Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66, where she met her future husband, Herb Alpert, who sings background here. I just love her voice and the great Latin rhythm arrangement of this favorite song of mine.
@recovering16 I don't really know what you wanna say with this? I know Lesley wrote it for Elton John, but it doesn't mean it's an Elton John/Bernie Taupin song, like people tend to think!
Are you sure it's Lani Hall? May i have uploaded the wrong version, haven't i wrote Lani Hall?
@zoodden Nope, Lesley Duncan didn't write it for Elton John; she wrote it as a quick b-side to her 1969 single "A Road to Nowhere" (Goffin/King), and also released it as an a-side in the States (1970). She then re-recorded it for her first album "Sing Children Sing" (1971). It's since been recorded by over 160 different artists including, probably most recently, a strange version by Marianne Faithfull.
Lani: wonderfull voice, one of the best in the world, a peculiar beautifull face, a very elegant body and a very special woman Herb is really a lucky man, congratulations to him.
Hey BlkKnite57... up late, can't sleep... I know EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN... -- actually Elton John on Tumbleweed Connection does "Come Down in Time" quite beautifully -- that is what I was looking for; and I found this about a year ago and almost died that all the great music from this album is on YouTube... 57 mean you come from '57??? Thanks zoodden for posting....
OMGOSH.....this is the verson I've been looking for...I had this lp years ago..I loved her voice...I listened to Olivia and Elton's versions...they were good but I knew someone else besides Lesley duncan(who wrote it) had also done it...and I finally found Lani....and then I remembered the whole album...what a find after all these years...thanks so much for putting this up...wow!!
Herb "i have no real talent but possess a crapload of money" albert wrecked this woman. She should havee remained with sergio...And for some ungodly reason Herb feels the need to SING on the songs all the time. the man's ego was Giant.
@themtb2003 Wow, really??? Did you really just say that?!? Seriously, it's obvious you haven't actually listened to Herb Alpert (with a "p", not a "b" thanks!) during the Tijuana Brass days. No talent??!!! Hey, tin ears, go back and study/listen before you diss him. And what he's done as a producer and co-founder of A&M Records is legendary! Did you happen to notice all the Grammys and gold/platinum on his walls? So easy of you to criticize in this Guitar Hero pseudo music era..... Fehhhhh...
@micvelo Gold records dont mean jack crap. that is not testimony at all to your talent. remember... Puff daddy has awards and gold records as well, and he cant play an instrument. That type of response shows you are looking thru the glitz of the music business and not the Person themselves. The actual playing of that person. look past the star power part, and listen to what the man is playing. It would seem that others AROUND him had talent. Not him.
@themtb2003 OK, your point made. I guess we can respectfully agree to disagree. ;) I look at talent not just from the playing perspective but also the ability to spot and harness that talent to share with the rest of us. He did that through his foresight and development of so many notable artists, e.g. Frampton, Janet J., Carole King, Quincy Jones (yeah, THAT Quincy Jones). Look up the A&M list someday just for kicks. Still think the man blows a mean horn. I don't do glitz BTW. Laff! Cheers!
Procurei muito mas encontrei esta canção maravilhosa. Não conseguia lembrar o título nem a cantora. Mas quem procura acha e eu achei sem querer no you tube.
@TheChristianAtheist Oh yes, LANI HALL recorded that song. It's included in her CLASSICS album. It's slower but nevertheless sang beautifully by this vocally gifted woman.
Wonderful performance. This woman has a most beautiful voice. She was with Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66. And she married to Herb Alpert of the Tijuana Brass.

Isn't that Herb Albert backing up this song with Lani? It sounds just like him and, of course, they have been married for 35 years... the lucky s.o.b.
@TheGreenDragon99 yes I heard him say this on an interview of KPFK radio a few years ago. This song is included in his demo to this day, the only one not written by him.
I remember this song as a kid..I searched the internet and can't find a download to buy from any known outlet (it's on Amazon for $160 - I just want this song).
Nice to see anything from Sun Down Lady posted here. Anyone have the Sun Down cut to post ? It was a great song, totally destroyed when the Captain and Tennille recorded the same melody/similar lyrics as Muskrat Love ?!?
