Con respeto to all of you and you have all fine points and reasons to discuss. Did you ever come to think just for a moment that! Gio is an evolution of all the drummers you mention. Just as some of you are evolutions of some of your mentors? Tata, Papin,Patato,Armando P,Mongo are all influences that develop us as soon as we hear them or see them or study them for the 1st time and on. They all have a place and a mark to make for the study they have chosen.
Very difficult to say who is best in any instrument unless they sit side by side and one just absolutely takes another to school. Usually we let personnal taste tell us who is best ( and that could be right or wrong). I think Gio is one of the best ever when it comes to technique and drumming skills but not when it comes to time and playing in a groove. IMO Tata Guines was the king.
Giovanni is specific in every hit in this solo and in every solo I have seeing him do. His sense of timing is flawless. No matter what you personal taste is the truth is the truth. On the congas he is the best. The great Anga recognize it too when alive. Cuba and the whole world adores and respect Giovanni. Giovanni has his own line of LP congas. Check it out on the LPmusic . com web site. I've never heard of that mito urbano.
As for the LP Compact Conga, it's good for carrying in your car, in case you get an unexpected chance to jam with a band (rather than carting around the real thing). It's good to use as a third or fourth conga, if you don't own more than 2. It really sounds pretty good, considering. Watch the video of Giovanni playing one on the LP site.

I disagree with you Acere, but thnk you for being respectful and discussing things in a friendly matter. As for Joe: I respect your comment as well, but I alsodisagree. I am a drummer and I studied both maestro Anga and Giovannis' stlyes. Gio "to me" is more graceful and cleaner. When Anga does his double strokes they come out sloppy, but if you watch Gio everything is picture perfect and effortless. And Gio has gone to Cuba many timesand when he sits down to play, the rumberos stay quiet.

There was a joke in PR that Gio got kicked out of PR for playing too fast :) Even in this video after the 1 min mark his goes nuts , same in the Calle 54 video. If you listen to Anga he stays in time. And Tata forget it. I appreciate Gio's virtuosity but my likes is more towards guys that played and got to you. Like Patato, Chano, Sabu, Mongo etc.

it's so incredible that even though that was a great performance, someone will still find something to hate on haha. you can't touch his congas so you'll say he's overdressed, who cares what he looks like? your watching that for the music right? i mean i can't imagine you looked up giovanni conga solo in order to say he's overdressed. haha youtube users crack me up sometimes.
