The US commentators were abit out of touch, referring to the "Huge Upset" by Canada.
At the big pre-olympic regatta at Lucerne, the US and Canada had split their series of two finals. They'd BOTH beaten the East Germans, who were the best of the boycotting Eastern Block nations. (the boycott in retribution for us boycotting the 1980 games .... over, ironically the invasion of Afghanistan)
The disappointment must have been palpable for the Kiwis, however. (they weren't at Lucerne)

A great bunch of Canadian guys who spent countless hours training in St.Catharines, Ontario. All of them helping out whenever asked.
What an inspiration to so many young men and women in the area. Those guys spurned along a multitude of others to be sucessful.
