In 1974 I was hanging out at a record store in Memphis called Pop Tunes. One day I went there to buy my first Mickey Newbury album. I'd heard him on the radio. The counter girl was really pretty and complimented me on my taste in music. I got a real kick out of that. Today I still have that album and still play it. He was the perfect cross section of Country and R&B
I met Mickey at a golf course somewhere in the 1970's -- I had no idea who he was -- but enjoyed every minute I spent with him. What a great guy.
Years later I learned who wrote all the songs I loved and enjoyed since I was in high school in the 1960's. I wish I knew then what I know now -- I could have said to him "many thanks for all the Sweet Memories."
Mickey Newbury was one of my husband's dearest and close friends. I have been a great fan for the last 11yrs. I wish I had been able to meet him, but I know him and love him and his music through my husband's stories of the good times they had together at the Flora-Bama. There will never be another Mickey Newbury or anyone that can match him. Can you just hear Mickey 's sweet voice singing in Heaven with the angels.
