  • Great, lots of build up and then it dies when it gets interesting,

  • Robin Williams is no match for him.

  • L.Ron was a fashist, a perv, and a conman. How sad that people don't look before they jump. They give there money away to liers. Then give there children as slaves. For what? The cult of Xenu? Scientology works for the rich at the top. You will never be there. When you have no more, you go away. Bye,bye dumbass.

  • SCIENTOLOGY WORKS!!! SCIENTOLOGY WORKS!!!! SCIENTOLOGY WORKS!!!! (but its expensive) who cares though it's worth every penny without it I wouldn't be anything

  • Yeah, I'm sure some forgotten, most likely shit story L. Ron Hubbard cranked out for a magazine is the first psychological horror novel.

    No doubt : I

  • Hasn't Tom Cruise sued various publications for slandering the name of Scientology? Funny that he hasn't sued Harlan Ellison for saying loudly and clearly - as an eyewitness to the time - LRH created this whole thing to make money. Is the truth that hard to face?

  • @Thorion1969 The only entity on this planet better at litigation than the Church of Scientology is Harlan Ellison. Hubbard's sheep and their e-meters wouldn't stand a chance against Ellison. They may have the cash, but Harlan has an actual brain, and a brilliant one at that.

  • @drduke28 To be fair, which people never are to the cult of Scientology (as if other religions are less crazy or more true...they aren't), the people who initially joined Dianetics in the early 50s were not fools and were not sheep. They were with a few exceptions highly intelligent people who saw something of value in Hubbard's work. And Hubbard talked a lot of sense to start with....but he went more than a little mad almost at once, and only got worse from then til he finally croaked.

  • Wait ... so someone would start a religion just so they can turn a profit?

  • Comment removed

  • Harlan has more energy than a photovoltaic power plant. What's amazing is that, when this was recorded for Audible, he was SIXTY-EIGHT!

  • You can respect a person for their talent and I do admitt (rather reluctantly) that Hubbard did write some fantastic stuff but he was also incredibly evil and sick therefore I don't understand how anyone would want to call themselves the friend of someone so utterly vile and abusive. Sounds like just more blind adulation and willingness to be impressed by someone who you don't really know anything about.

  • Yes, part 2 please!

I have respect for Ellison's work although I don't actually know a lot about the man himself, however when I read that he said 'I had-& still have-LOTS of camaraderie & admiration for the man.' & 'Ron Hubbard & I were friends' - I just think yet another blind sucker successfully charmed by the LRH. Sociopaths are always charming.Hubbard was 'friends' with Jack Parsons too, their friendship included Hubbard conning Parson's out of his life's savings & running off with his girl

  • need part 2 this is great stuff

  • L. Ron Hubbard was a raving lunatic drug addict. He was an extremely BOLD FACED LIAR. Just do a tiny little bit of research for yourself. It is very well documented that L. R. Hubbard (LRH) made up his entire biography. His son, Ron Jr., says he was a drug addict and imported drugs into the US. Not sure about that, except when you hear him talk it sounds to me like he is FUCKED UP. Anyway, Scientology destroys peoples' lives.

  • The real 'problem' is that human beings are hardwired to embrace religions and belief systems. Most (some?) of us reject them after judging them critically. Scientology is just another belief system, hence it is no different from Cathlolocism, Satanism, conspiracy theories, or Star Wars.

  • @ToxicWastoid Excepting that Scientology demands money and non-disclosure contracts and makes use of private investigators and threat of litigation to harass and threaten opposition and defectors.

  • @10000vodkas Fair comment and I agree. My view is that all religions are silly and irrelevant in modern times. Some are benign, while others are utterly pernicious to the point of leading their faithful to their deaths. Fewer people getting sucked into religion across the board would mean fewer getting into 'bad' ones like Scientology and sex/orgy/death cults. It will take 100-200 years for this behaviour to leech its way out of our genes.

  • @ToxicWastoid Agreed, though I think the "hard-wired" bit is a bigger problem than many suppose, far more deeply rooted than, say, a single gene for good memory. I also think the populism of politicians and media will reflect and flame the religious mania of the masses and generally prevent people from using reason to free themselves of the crap heaped on them as children by parents and community.

  • @10000vodkas Indeed. It is in their best interest to keep society divided into tribes that are in constant conflict with each other.

  • The energy is what makes professionals professionals. They're serious about their work and pursue it like it's manna from heaven.

  • I cannot but aknowledge his crap stories and the fact that he did have a great imagination....but besides that, knowing this fact, how can anyone take LRH seriously?

  • Yes. Did U see his teeth? Its discusting...:)

  • Where's the rest of this? It's compelling because Ellison simply eclipses Williams in a tidal wave of energy and intellectuality. I knew Hubbard set up a religion as a business and had been a science fiction writer but I never knew the details about the typewriter and so forth.

  • @Onlymusical Yeah. I want to see more, mostly because it's Harlan Ellison & Robin Williams, not some dry documentarians or talking heads. Ellison has had to cut WAY BACK on his writing, personal appearances, etc. after 3 or more bypasses & God knows how many heart attacks.

  • Harlan Ellison: master of digression.

  • Yea, come on man. More!

  • this is fucking awesome post more !!!!!

  • Wow...what a great combination! Harlan Ellison and Robin WIlliams!! Wow...I don't know if I could very easily come up with a combination of another two people that I would have a better time sitting and talking with! Very interesting conversation!!!

  • hey Harl, ya wanna talk a little faster, getting bored here.

  • "Fear" sounds like Shamhammer's "The Happening".

  • harlan ellison is a very blunt and honest guy in general...i doubt he made this story up!...sciencetology xenu story sounds like bad sci-fi from the 1950s!..with a ripoff of pop-freudian lingo!

  • 4:41

Fear is one of my favorite books. Very underrated.

  • All prophets are carnival barkers and con men. Typical. Bless Harlan Ellison for being none of the above.

  • employing tech common to many business practices this felonious band of maniacs continues to have a tax exempt status

after they eat your brain they hunger for your soul

why does our government allow these psychic vampires to continue enslaving others?

  • The interview was done in 2000 and the complete thing is 60 minutes long. It's one of the many interviews Robin did between 2000 and 2002 when he was doing an internet talk show on Audible.com (a new episode, each 30 minutes, was released every 2 weeks ... Harlan Ellison's episode consists of 2 episodes) It's not downloadable anymore ... and copyright issues prevent me from publishing them on The Robin Williams Fansite

  • @RWLinda I don't suppose I could get you to send me those two episodes with Ellison, could I? Or get you to put them on megau pload or rapid share?

  • Robin Williams says: "I have no mouth, but I must scream... From sheer awsomeness!!!" (Harlon Ellison keeps talking to himself & from that without the help of "H.P Lovecraft's" creation - Yogsothoth... Azathoth wakes up, leaving Harlon Ellison exsisting... (Including AM) :P

  • The origin of scientology. lol! Harlen has been around, ya know?

  • smooshing=joooo

  • coocaboos and cadodies????

  • i wish i could listen to more of that anyone know were i can find it

  • Where's the rest of this?!!?

  • No one can out talk Harlan, not even Robin Williams. Always said that Science Fiction Fandom invented Scientology. It is so amusing that people took it seriously.

  • @Robinwhiteart Wow -- amazing.. he makes Robin Williams sound positively sleepy!

  • @Robinwhiteart daamn, robin sounds like a slowpoke in comparison

  • If only they would talk about Islam like this.

  • I find Dianetics fascinating preciely because Hubbard WAS a fraud, but one with some good ideas.

The religion is a money sucking farce that would put any televangelist to shame, however, Hubbard had some interesting ideas on psychology that I think should be explored.

But the really neat thing is that, because I see him as a charlatan, I am in little danger of approaching him as a Messiah. For me, his works always will be very human creations, and can be judged on that basis.

  • @NonDramaZone creations of human slavery

  • @farswept Please expand on that.

  • @NonDramaZone need I, really?

  • @farswept Only if you want to make it understood. Man's history is one of trying to understand what's hurting him, and what he can do to stop it. Obviously, a few mistakes have been made along the way.

  • i think we all already know ron hubbard was full of shit and was nothing more then a fiction writter.

  • an awful fiction writer at that.

  • Amazing. Robin Williams lets someone talk. There's a god after all.

  • Try talking over Ellison.I dare you.

  • That's okay. I could listen to Harlan all day. Fountain of ideas, that man.

  • What names does he drop at 00:46?

  • The name Harlan Ellison mentions at the 00:46 mark is Louis Stanton Auchincloss, AKA Louie Auchincloss. He died recently on January 26, 2010. He was 92.

  • Wow, the first psychological horror novel?!?! I guess Ellison's never read Knut Hamsun. Or Edgar Allen Poe. Meh. Still love the guy.

  • It must have been a refreshing change for Williams NOT to be the fastest mind/mouth in the room.

  • when those additions to his typewriter didn't speed him up enough, he switched to amphetamines.

  • Does any one really believe a 13 year old Harlan Ellison was " hanging out " with some of the biggest names in golden age sf?

    Ellison is a pathalogical liar

  • He's been saying that for a long time, back when the people in question were still alive and quite able to speak up for themselves on the topic.

    It basically checks out.

  • I believe Ellison previously said in an interview in the Seventies that he had been told the story by Ted Sturgeon. I would believe that versionmore than Ellison's Ego fueled bragging Iwas there B.S.

  • Ellison is a pathalogical liar?! Gee.. so WHAT THE FUCK does that make L. Ron Hubbard? Are you kidding me? If anyone should be charged with being a pathalogical liar, it's LRH!

  • Look I'm not defending or attempting to defend L Ron Hubbard.

But how can you debunk someone using dubious statements?

  • "I'm just a highschool kid"

He acknowledges he was young at the event.

Other authors have similar stories about Hubbard, its likely the ideas had been floating around a while and discussed at various get togethers - especially if Hubbard was looking for more writers to recruit like van Vogt.

  • 13 years old? How's your math? A man born in 1934 would, in 1955 or 1956, be 21/22 years old.

  • Better than your concept of history.

The first dianetics article was published in the May 1950 issue of Astounding Science Fiction.

Hubbard was pitching dianetics as early as January 1949. Which means that if Ellison's story is true he would have been approximately 13-14 years old at the time.

  • Ellison was born in 1934. The story they are discussing takes place in 1955- he would be 21. There is no reason to believe he wasn't a poor writer in NY at the time.

  • Yeah, everyone really should believe Harlan Ellison did rub shoulders with most of the biggest names in golden age SF. On account that they have all mention knowing Harlan through their own works and memoirs.

Your really barking up the wrong tree on this one.

  • This is a great interview -- where's the rest of it?

  • I ends before it gets to the good stuff.

But yeah, Hubbard is a phony.

  • 1:28

"Most of his biography was made up. He created his own mythology about himself."

After watching ChurchofScientology's official video bio, I don't find it hard to believe.

  • @GaeasBlessing Yes he did, of course. He had, all through his life, the feeling to be not enough. Nobody ever and the least himself could get him the feeling to be enough and ok. And so his enourmous drive ran on and on and created all that shit running along just for the feeling of being loved, but in the end he wasn´t really able to feel this...

  • And how do you know?

  • Seconding request for the second part.

  • Eldeecue:

Seconding your seconding of the request for the second part.

  • Do you guys have PART TWO of this talk? This is great stuff.

  • This is Classic Ellison. He knew L. Ron Hubbard, & he probably knew what a BS artist Hubbard was. I always heard that LRH couldn't write for sour owl poop. Hence the birth of $cientology.

  • hubbard was such a crappy writer. his books are for s--t.

  • That was always my understanding. How he cobbled together a religion based on science fiction ideas beats me silly.

$cientology is for the rich & brain - dead / gullible.

  • @HoneyCallMeAnonymous I think this story was in the film "Dreams with sharp teeth."

  • @HoneyCallMeAnonymous Id like to hear part 2 as well.

  • Interesting that you cut it off just as he got to the truth about what crap scientology truly is.

  • Harlan Ellison is faster and smarter than most. He's proud of it. And damned funny. He has the chutzpah, talent, and intellect to back up his bravado. He will be missed.

  • oneozmoz:

I hope he can keep up his career, I understand keeping to deadlines & etc. has taken its toll on Ellison.

  • L. Ron Hubbard's "Slaves of Sleep" was his estimate of those who fell for his Scientology.

  • Google "SOK Kneeophytes" for a Scientology parody that will make you laugh (or cry, or not).

  • LRH did it for the lulz

  • one penny a word paid your rent. Weird Irony! great interview

  • and that's what people want to pay writers NOW on eLance... Irony indeed

  • Why would you sell your writing on eLance? i mean, it's obvious who's buying it on that place... not professionals.

  • the only guy to ever talk more than robin williams in a conversation.

    ever.

  • Sorry if this has been posted, but two of the synopses of Hubbard's he just threw out here were themes that got made into movies - 'Typewriter In The Sky' (Will Ferrel & Emma Thompson's 'Stranger than Fiction') and 'Death's Deputy' (William Macy's 'The Cooler') - neither of which give Hubbard any credit.

  • But did he write those under pseudonyms?

  • "Stranger Than Fiction" was certainly more entertaining than "Battlefield: Earth".

  • Harlan Ellison is so awesome he made Robin Williams stay quiet for more than 10 seconds.

  • Holy shit your right! Williams actually let someone else talk.

  • I know! That's AMAZING!

  • Well, if there's one man on this Earth that can out-talk Robin Williams, it's Harlan Ellison...

Also, Williams is being respectful. You can tell that he really admires Ellison, and knows that interrupting would not improve the quality of this particular conversation.

  • I don't think Ellison actually supports or condones Scientology or L. Ron Hubbard beyond the fact they were writing buddies during the 50s. They had not seen each other for decades by the time Hubbard actually died. He's badmouthed the actual Scientology organization numerous times though.

  • Of course Ellison liked Hubbard - and hates Scientologists. Ellison has made no secret of the fact that he likes writers, in particular accomplished writers, and generally looks down on and dislikes people who simply read the stuff.

As far as Ellison is concerned, Scientologists are simply another version of the nerdy fan, little different from those that wear Spock ears or dress up with plastic swords as Jedis. And Ellison simply despises fans. He's said as much on numerous occasions.

  • $cilons should come to the conclusion that Hubbtard was a liar and leave their stupid cult when they hear this - but of course they won't.

  • this video didn't load

  • When the video doesn't load I always refresh the page.

  • I hear the rest of this interview

  • Religion & Scientology are like the fairy tales Mother Goose & Jack and the Bean stalk: Written to help the frightened little monkey's sleep at night

The belief in one fairy tale over another is completely arbitrary - And depends on which frightening story you heard as a child

In reality, people are simply afraid of the responsibility associated with having an "internal locus of control" - Thus, they invent saviors to hide behind when it gets dark out at night

  • the true value in religion will never be understood from the point of view now held in the western world which is materialistic and self serving. the problem is it's become so corrupt and irrelevant to daily life. cynicism is the easiest retort to something that used to function as a common uniter among mankind, outside of what could be owned or explained which is allot.

  • I think more people hide behind the monstrosities committed by religious organizations as a way to say that theres no value in it, then seek to understand what it's true function is or was in the world, all doctrines and prejudices aside.

  • Funny how it cuts out just as they get into the details of scientology. . .

  • Harlan Ellison and Robin Williams in the same room. I think my head would explode.

  • Scientology is a shite religion that idiots pay to see what's next... and what's next always ends up being the same.

LRH's early work was pioneering SF.

  • I've been reading and following Harlan off-and-on for almost 40 years now. Those of us who came up on science fiction were not strangers to Ron Hubbard. Good short story writer, then one day he shows up with a religion and next thing we knew "Scientology" had this huge following. We were dumbfounded! I could have created that! God help you if you try to debate someone who believes in that stuff, though. Hubbard was smart and sharp and a good, good, good salesman. You can start a religion!

  • You have to give it up for a guy who can talk at such a pace that Robin Williams can barely get a word in.

  • "AAAHHHHhhh yes, so begins Scientology."

Yes indeed, my friend. Yes indeed.

  • Hubbard had a failed business deal with Jack Parsons, and ran off with Jack's boat and babe. Jack Parsons who would be responsible for the famous JPL (Jet Propulsion Labrotories) turned out to also be an occultist who was a disciple of Crowley's.

thieving the babe and boat kinda goes with Hubbard's love the navy and getting funky wit the ladies. He could have also got influence indirectly from crowley.. hmm.

  • Parsons died in a lab explosion. Too bad Hubbard wasn't with him at the time.

  • You have to understand that Ellison grew up idolizing Hubbard and derived a great deal of inspiration from his work, and his dedication to it - long before Hubbard went batshit crazy. He's trying desperately to hold onto that hero, and blot out what that hero ultimately became.

  • AAAHHHHhhh yes, so begins Scientology.

But no matter how many times it's shown and/or proven that L Ron Hubbard basically made up Scientology, the people who follow it refuse to accept the truth. Obviously the higher ups are just money hungry and crazy but the lower people are fucking sheep (sheeple).

  • WARNING LRH was a bad bad writter. Battlefeild earth was the literary equivilant of Troll 2.

  • ur an idiot, the book is awesome, the movie sucked

  • CHANOLOGYPOJECT..... I just clicked on your channel and it's all messed up like half of the page is missing or failed to download ?

  • hubbard was influenced by wilhelm reich? i guess that makes sense...

  • ..bah, it ended like that, I want more :\

  • howcome there aren't more interviews of Harlan on here?

  • Regression Therapy and Hypnosis, he researched psychotherapy techniques 'at the time' he wrote dianetics. He applied them badly in part BUT also it is WAY out of date and practiced by people who want to wage war on the profession their techniques were stolen from..

  • Well, there are a few reasons. One is the placebo effect. It makes you feel good because you want it to make you feel good, it's a self fulfilling prophecy. Another is the community of Scientology, that, like other organized religions, makes people feel good because they feel like they belong somewhere.

Honestly, if it works for you, that's great. What the protestors and critics want to expose are the abuses of the organization of the Church.

  • Why does enlightenment cost money? Why are CoS's employees not being paid minimum wage? Why does the Office of Special Affair harass, defame, sue, and attack critics of the CoS when Scientology is supposed to be pro-free speech? Why does the CoS receive religious favoritism from the IRS, in direct violation of the establishment clause? Why doesn't CoS openly admit their beliefs in Incident II aka the Xenu story? Why is there a Disconnection Policy?

These are the questions we ask, you should too

  • There is a fundamental difference here between religion and the church(?) of scientology. I agree with you 7tilsleep, im sure that using study tech can indeed help people, without a doubt it can increase self awareness. However the practices of the church(?) is a different matter. I am sure that you could have found another avenue of self evaluation that would have cost you far less + been far more beneficial. Now that you are in scientology you seem to believe it is the be all + end all.

  • It's just one addiction for another, try finding harmony with out conviction. You might not know what you are missing. Don't limit youself to a single illusion and paradigm, transcend and change, constantly.

  • wow, can u even find better evidence of the bullshit of this cult, now its off to look for the rest of that program

  • NUF SAID!

  • i wanna here the rest of that Conversation

  • me2

  • Psychological horror? I'm pretty sure House of Escher is a psychological horror novel--written by Poe, obviously.

  • not a novel, short story.

  • I think this is the first time I've heard Harlan speak, and I'm glad I found it. He's a writer with some fascinating insights.

  • to what standards do you hold your authors?

  • Either I'm really slow or both Ellison and Williams are on speed.

  • Bad news, bubba. They aren't on speed.

  • Robin and Williams have 2 of the fastest brains on the planet.. but Harlan's mouth tends to run faster than his brain.

  • Sorry, Robin and Harlan.

  • It really is interesting to hear about this wonderful asshole of a writer. And look where it is today, teetering of the virge of self destruction. A good example of this self destruction is how they Fair Games that guy in LA with sign. Scientology made a sign with the guy's names on it to terrorize him, thus terrorizing the group. But ultimately, it was shot on video to be put on youtube by Sci to terrorize the nation into not protesting. THey really fucked up. FUCKYOUSCIENTOLOGY!

  • "Start a religion." So glad I found this.

  • I want more too! I love this guy he talks so fast and furious, great character. More power to yah Harl. ;D

N.B: I don't care about scientology, just science fiction.

  • Damn. "Death's Deputy" sounds a lot like something C0$ related...

  • Where is the second part? I want moar!

  • download part 7 of their discussion

  • and people still blindly follow the Co$?

    they should proboly hear this

  • Actually that's how he talks. He isn't in denial. Others are.

  • are you serious? You aren't a scientologist are you?

  • spunkface

  • Cool

  • Just amazing

  • Does Xenu know about all this?

  • Relax and enjoy. It's just an interesting piece of history.

  • what is that suppose to mean?

  • caught a lot of bricks?

  • Hey, even Hitler cared about his pets, so even the evilest scum can have doses of humanity. Not to mention that this was before he fully stirred up the kool-aid. It's nice to hear, though, that even Ellison could go off on tangents and almost forget where he was leading to, originally XD

  • You mean LRH lied about stuff??? Impossible!

  • Thanks for the post. Enjoyed it.

  • somebody tell tom and his even shorter friend.
