  • Finally somebody itsactually using the fuckin midi...

  • @virsynth I don't have an iPad, and I prefer knobs and sliders to a piece of glass. I'm sorry, but your video ain't that impressive, either :|

  • Excellent

  • @musicroman Thank you :)

  • does it do drums like the tr series?

  • @Cockoblock As far as I know, the drums kits are 808 and 909 clones. Editing the drums may be a bit different.

  • Very cool synth!

  • Great underrated synth, but is a bit unruly. It's difficult to make fine adjustments because the sliders and knobs are a bit jumpy. But the sounds are amazing, and the filter has a huge sound that is unlike any synths I've heard.

People say it's the same engine as the jp8000 but I don't think that is accurate.

  • Roland sh-32 mint condition with original box/manuals on los angeles craigslist

    right now

  • Looking at the interface (front panel) I can only expect that this must be one of the most intuitive synths ever. (I mean for such a little box)

The only thing I wonder is, can you split the available parts into different midi channels ? Is there keyboard-split functionality ?

  • @Keybern Yes, you can have a different MIDI channel for each part. I'm not sure about keyboard splitting though.

You can look it up in the manual at Roland's web site :)

  • i had mine ripped off me by cash converters "im sorry its not here anymore" are you sure its here??bastards i wanted to buy it back and its gone away vanished.

  • Roland SH-32

    Roland JP-8080

    Korge MS-2000,

i wonder which is the best out of these VA's? I want to get only one. any suggestions?

  • I only own an SH-32, and have no experience with the other two. I know they're pretty bad-ass compared to the SH-32 (and more expensive). Please check out vintagesynth for more info :D

  • its ok. because of your video i went to the used shop on a whim, and was happily surprized to find one SH-32 in good condition, so i got it a few hours ago.

ive now joined the club :D

  • Welcome to the club then ;D It's really great box for that price, you won't regret it :D

  • Thanks! I started using it without reading the manual. I usually do this on new gear to judge the ease of use. But for the first time I think I need to read the manual :D.. SH-32 is more complicated than MicroKorg.. But its alot more versatile, interesting to use, and has more power than MicroKorg! :D However, the SH-32 arpeggio is complicated! wow! :D Well Im glad this quicky went out of production because it becomes rare and will probably become a future collectors item! ;D

  • It is really a complicated piece :) They tried to fit a lot in a little box (one control part for 2 OSC,2 LFO, etc.) and there are a lotta button combinations which don't go great with a crappy display :P But I love it, it sounds so phat (check out my tracks on myspace, very amateur but you can at least have an idea). A lotta people think it'll be a collector's item ;D

  • @haikousei

I own the SH-32 and the MS-2000R. I've played around with the 8080, but cannot say too much about it. I like both the SH and MS tweakability and both makes some great sounds so you can't lose with either. I personally find the MS2000 to be my favorite, it is highly expressive and has more controls to it. Additionally, you can name rather than number patches.

  • @haikousei wich is the best?? Take the jp 8080...That´s a good one!!

  • I already have microKorg which is the same as MS-2000 and the Roland SH-32.. I don't want to get all Roland.. I like variety.. so the next VA i get will be by Yamaha ;)

  • Can you step program the drum sounds or are they premade pattens?

  • You can either step program the drums or program them on the fly :)

  • are you using a seperate arp on this your hands seem to be touching something else or is that just a keyboard.

it soundspretty amazing for va thats why i've just got one on ebay for £200!!

cant wait to paly with it it sounds fun!

  • The module has an arp, but I use the keyboard with it too at some parts... it has a drum-machine too :)

It's a pretty awesome module for the price... it's sorta obsolete though. The possibilities are infinite :)

  • very good little vid. thanks for posting it.

i have a sh-32 as well. like it a lot.

but i find the smallest tweak can send a good sound into bad places fast. you seem to have a good feel for it.

  • Thanks a bunch :) SH-32 is a lotta fun, but it takes a lotta time to get used to its interface. I was a rookie when I took this video, and you're right about the sensitivity of the settings, practice makes perfect ;)

  • im thinking about buying this for 250$ canadian, is that a good deal? and is it hard to use at first? and how long does it take to figure out how to make music?, cuz yours is really awesome :)

  • If you have the patience to learn it from a not so explanatory manual (you'll learn about the buttons but not how to make music or create sounds) this module is definitely worth it. Practice makes perfect and it all depends on your time and willing. The sounds are really phat, you get a drum machine and an arpeggiator as well. The best way is to find a simple subtractive synthesis tutorial, and your imagination is the only limit :) Good luck!

  • ok thanks, can it be hooked up to a keyboard? and if so is it easy to use with the keyboard? and about how hard is it to learn how to use? on a scale of one to ten how much? thanks i hope to hear from you

  • Yes, it has a MIDI in and out. The thing I do is to record a track in MIDI with the KB, hookup the SH-32 to the computer via MIDI like an external MIDI bank, and tweak the knobs as it plays the MIDI tracks without the KB and record the output as a wave track. Like I said, easy / hard depends on your willing to learn and the time you got in your hands. I'm no musician, and I have no knowledge of music theory, but I still managed to make some tracks, so it shouldn't be that hard. Maybe a 6/10?

  • Do you know how to check the current O.S ?

Mine won't do program changes, it just shows up as blank dashes when I want to change the patch with a program change message?

    any ideas?

Also I want to do a bulk dump of my patches, but don't think ableton supports that, I tryed to do it with midiox app , but no joy...any help..thanks

  • Do you have the manual? I know it's not the most helpful, but page 87 has some info on the subject. I remember changing patches from the MIDI keyboard before. I tried bulk dumping with Sonar 6.0 before, and I failed also :| Please lemme know if you get it to work...

  • What do you mean by trigger? It's connected to a MIDI keyboard in some videos, some are just the keys on it...

  • Why doesn't Roland make things like this anymore? Why. Why, God.

  • You're right... this is everything in a little box really. I'm glad I came across one :)

  • I remember seeing it on the old roland website, before they got all modern and shit. I should of bought one back then! Roland and Korg are discontinuing all these great synths they made just a few years ago, now. ):

  • Maybe you can find one on ebay ;)

  • have you played the new SH-201.....It sucks. It feels like a plastic casio from my childhood

  • It's hard to believe that 'DiskinbobulatorATX' has ever touched the SH-32. It has a very solid build. The case is made of metal, not plastic. It's not got the most intuitive of interfaces but it's absolutely nothing like a plastic Casio as the poster claims.

  • if you acctually read it, I said Sh-201 not sh-32. I own an sh-32 and was comparing it to the crappy new 201.

  • I did read your posting, but I appear to have misread your intention.

  • pillpilferer: I just had a look at your other contributions to YouTube comments and it appears that they are all illiterate. Also present is a strange obsession with calling people homophobic names, which says much more about your own psychological position than it does about theirs.

  • I don't agree!

    The SH-201 rules!!!

  • Well, they sell them for triple the original price where I live... so I'm sticking to this one ;)

  • Thank you! The SH-201 is a GREAT synth, given its low price. Most of its critics either have never tried its USB capabilities (carries sound AND midi data), and/or have spent 5x as much on something else and reflexively piss on any inexpensive synth that makes them subconsciously question their purchase.

  • Thank you :)

  • nice tracks. i checked your myspace. keep going man, you do a lot of cool stuff with this little beasty! thanks for posting!

  • Thanks a bunch dude... new tracks to come soon :)

  • Seems like a total tweakbox, they should make more things like this.

  • it's a lotta fun for the price really :)

  • Is the SH-32 making the drum sounds too ?

  • Yes it has TR-808 and TR-909 drums sets on it. You can program arpeggios and drum loops with it, too.

  • Cool video. I always wanted to know what these sounded like. Better than I expected actually. Thanks for posting

  • Thank you :) Check out my tracks from the link in the comments section to see what it can do ;)

  • dude your new stuff is amazing

  • Thank you :)

  • I don't like its sound. It's too dry. Lacks "warmth".

  • That was years ago like I said... I can make it sound better now :) And you don't have to buy one if you don't like it ;)

  • Yeah, i know... I however liked the MC-09 as a monosynth. That was wickedly acid.

  • Anybody know of any sh-32 that is up for sale? None on Ebay at the moment. Thanks for you're time.

  • I think this is Rolands only Analog-modeling groovebox ever made, right? All the other groovebox in MC series is just typical rompler without analog modelling. And SP is just sampler.

  • It's not true analog like a moog though, it uses wave acceleration technology. So every sine/saw/square, etc. wave is actually a sample, yet you can work on those just like you would on an analog synth. I tried in with oscilloscope and the waves are pretty smooth. You're right MC's are permanent samples, and PS's are samplers. I do have an SP-505, it's pretty cool :) I think this is the only one, unless you consider TB-303 a synth.

  • Yes i know. The word "Analog modeling" means not real analog, but a modeling or imitation of analog. Your SH-32 reminds me of Korg Radias, which is like an analog modeling groovebox. I think the only real analog groovebox would be the DSI Evolver which is more expensive than Korg Radias or Roland SH-32.

  • Oh ok, sorry :) DSI makes some bad-ass gear... I knew one other bad-ass box, it was all white and sexy, I can't remember the name now though :(

  • boriing... nice preset "demo"

  • The video was shot a long time ago... and the sounds are not presets. Check out my tracks if you wanna hear it in action, that's if you read the info.

  • please sampel my trance guitar ingie bingie..im using one..enjoyed the milage you were getting out of it..

  • Thanks a bunch :)

  • hi its trance guitar ingiebingie..im stuck with my 4or 5 presets iv made..its been hell 4 me.play turn.hold turn.zilllions of hours..i enjoyed watching you fiddel and mess..loved it triggering on its own then you play..do you have a arpeggiator into the sh32,and drum machine triggering the notes? i see a computer there. mine can distort.and jump out of preset. i was perplexed when i got it 2half years ago and am still perplexed. please check my video and sampel my guitar with it..have fun..

  • Hi, nice to meet you :) This is from a long time ago, I can do better stuff with it now. You can check out my tracks from the link I put here. Thanks for the positive feedback by the way :) The SH-32 does have an arpeggiator of its own, and also a drum machine (with 808 and 909 sets) in it. Do you own one? It takes a lotta time to get to know it, too many button combinations, and the display sucks, but other than that it's a phat box ;) What do you mean by "sample my guitar with it" by the way?

  • I got an SH-32 a few days ago. It's great. It has oscillators, filters, lfo's, an arp and other stuff synthesizers have. So don't worry about obscurity. :) Synthesizers are what they are, and the SH-32 kicks ass.

  • I don't really worry about it, it's really a phat box ;) I'll cherish it forever :)

  • Damn! Now everyone will know!

  • Thanks for letting me know!

  • That Shits off tha RIP

  • I love this module (my first piece of gear), but I think the new SH-201 is gonna take its place since the SH-32 is now obsolete :|

  • Let me know if you gonna sell it...

  • Sorry dude... I still use it :)

  • I seriously doubt that. The SH-201 sucks. It sounds crappy, and the interface is half-assed. (You're required to program functions on the computer? What kind of synth requires that?) I just picked up an SH-32 a couple days ago, and this thing blows the SH-201 out of the water.

  • I'm really glad to hear that then :) I hope you enjoy it as much as I do...

  • This is when I was a newbie... this module truly rocks ;)
