Stephen Foster lived in Cincinnati in 1848 when he wrote this song. He worked at his brother's steamship shop which can be seen in this early daguerreotype picture taken in September 1848:
rochester.edu/news/photos/dagPlate2.html
If you zoom in, you can see the Foster shop (the one with the white awning, next door to the Athearn & Hibbero company) directly behind the Embassy steamboat.
however i couldn't help but notice that the female strings player is wearing jeans with pink hair, a blatant slap to bigoted gender customs of the gold rush days. god bless rights activist's and the change of society for the better!
My 2-year-old loves this video and has made me play it 20 times. She can name all the instruments now: "See the banjo, daddy!" Thanks for some good family fun.
Thank you. Our studio recording of this song (very similar) is available on Ballad of America Volume 2: America Singing. You can find it at most major download sites, including iTunes.
The other night my doorbell played this tune when I sent a text message from my phone. Even stranger, the tune wasn't set as the door chime. It was one of 12 options. Susan was my sister's name - she died in an accident as a child. The text was part of an exchange of messages about something really important in my life. I believe my sister was guiding me. Bless her soul. This song will be so important in my life now.
they rock, so going on the play list I want these guys to be even more famous and they should have played this instead of some of the crap at the inauguration, now that would have been interesting to say the least huh?
Oooohhh!!! I really hates this song when I'm were a child.... All of people sang me this xD Ang I said: Stop, please! xD Bun now I loves this ^^ hehehe
