@catholicpriest1 I agree. Listening to tapes is like learning a song from a tape and then stepping on stage and performing cold with the band who have been rehearsing. Learning and rehearsing are quite different from each other. And I try to get out of rehearsing whenever I can too.
I remember years ago when Bob Newhart did a bit on the Tonight show where he was "on the phone" with President Johnson, about catering a BBQ. Very funny. Anyone have that on YouTube? btw I loved this skit also.
Dean didn't like to rehearse. He would spend most of the time during the week on the golf course. Then, on Sunday afternoons, he would show up at NBC in Burbank and just do the show. He relied on cue cards and his fellow performers. That is one reason that the show was so fun. It was like Dean was part of the audience.
@catholicpriest1 This is nonsense - actually Dean rehearsed more than anyone else. Only he rehearsed on the golf course. His producers used to give him run throughs ofthe material on tape that he could listen to whilst playing golf or whilst at home.
I've laughed at this so many times when i was only listening to bob's solo act, but to see it performed with two people, let alone dean martin, is just hysterical.
Dean Martin does a good job of detracting from the sketch. It's much better when Newhart does it solo - nothing IS really better than Martin.

Did anyone notice Dean sounded like the cowardly lion when he was crying?

That phone call thing was Bob Newhart's trademark bit.

Does anyone have the sketch where Bob was making a phone call and you could only hear his end?

@catholicpriest1 If you are not in the studio to rehearse, you are not rehearsing. Rehearsing on the golf course... rubish!
