  • no body likes to mess with a Texan when he's got a gun leveled on 'em;-)

  • i have a contract with the child

  • The had better make The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass after all of the 'Harry Potter' and 'Twilight' craze dies down. In the hands of a great director, the trilogy has the potential to become a great film.

I really want to see Lyra and Will, although by the time the movies are produced, Dakota will be to old.

    Sad face :'(

  • @lonewolfando They aren't going to, at least not as of now... the books are amazing, really very amazing, but: even if you had read, this film became a little confusing in parts, and for those who never read it was a disaster. The director really messed it up, and while I enjoy this movie, I can see why a lot of people did not.

  • @DarthZimmeris Yea, I read the Subtle Knife and the Amber Spyglass after seeing the first film, it was confusing trying to figure out what had happened to Roger. I'm reading Northern Lights now and i'm already loving it, but I can see, from the parts i've read at the moment, why fans of the book might be disapointed with the film, they missed out quite a lot and i'm only half way through. That and I can't really imagine Lyra differently after seeing Dakota play her.

  • currently reading this book in class

  • happy birthday dakota!!!!!!

  • i love this movie it will all ways be my fave

  • This scene is awesome.

    A) they're scared of the bear

    B) Lee is threatening to shoot the guy who's threatening to shoot Lyra

    C) the Gyptians are threatenig to shoot the people who are threatening to shoot Lyra.

  • There's something that I've been always curious about, are those weapons bolt action rifles from WWII? they look like a Springfield sniper..

  • this movie is terrible. i dont see the religion thing just a totolitarian type society. ok so the ending sucked mad ass and the main character was too much of a annoyance. i mean she constantly put her foot in her mouth. a main character shouldnt be too bold where the audience hates her. and they still didnt explain dust!

  • My father is a preacher. I'm agnostic. We both went to go see this movie. It was awesome. :)

Listen, if you have real, strong faith in your religion, a MOVIE or a series of books shouldn't have enough power over you to crush your beliefs. Obviously all of the people bashing the books have secret doubt about Christianity. Or at least that's how it seems.

  • People do feel threatened now so they're more likley to be less open minded about movies like this.

  • pinche oso cool

  • 1:02 THATS THE GUY FROM GHOST RIDER!!!

    hes back lol

  • what the fuck?

In the book, iorek ripped their heads off!

    what's this limp-dicked pussy shit?

and the ending is that they all floated off in a balloon, happily ever after.

  • Argh, i LOVE Sam Elliot in that "Let's not be to hasty!" Moment! xD I still dont think it was such a good idea to give Iofur another name. Ragnar sounds rather, wrong to me xD Well the movie is ok ^^ I think iv'e seen it around 30 times up to now xD

  • SHUT UP! EVERYONE just shut up! There's no point in arguing. it's just a movie. I'm a cristen and I think there's no point in arguing over a silly movie.

  • ...hollywood and responsibility don't seem to go...I guess that make more money off of sensations but as an artist, that part of the business disgusts me!!!!!

  • for people who would't understand why the church would be against it...you too need to read a book or at least speak to your neighbor...it is this whole thing with daemons...every one has one WHAT that goes against every thing the church is speaking...and how could movie goers not get this...for example...exorcism of emily rose, the excorist (supposedly based on a true story) its like we are made to believe daemons are evil then they are seen as child hood pets

  • i thought iorek was pronounced "I owe rick" not urik well i guess i was wrong

  • Same here. Wait...does that mean "Iofur" is pronounced Yofur?

  • Love Sam Elliot even thought it's a shame he's so typecast.

  • although it's just a book, but some people are very sensitive with it because of their beliefe.

that's why!well,i'm not a cristian but i still like the story and philip pullman.but i hope one day people will reconsider before writing or making a movie if it's related to the religion.

  • Love the book, can't wait to see the movie!

  • Because apperantly sex was a sign of the devil

  • Actually the church is evil in a sense (there truthfully isn't a such thing as evil but still) : did you know that when a boy reached the age of puberty in the medieval ages his penis was cut of so he would't be able to have what they call: "sinful pleasure"?!

  • The key word in that statement is "medieval ages".

They don't do stuff like that anymore because, well, it's nonsensical!

I mean, have you ever talked to a priest? Do they sound fanatical to you? Well, maybe some, but most are just normal people like you or me! No matter what we did in the past, we still are just a group of people joined together by our belief in our saviour.

But, I still love this movie. Why? Because that's what it is, a MOVIE. Not a bashing against the church. An epic movie.

  • A crappy epic movie.

  • epic movie?

More like an epic piss on Phillip Pullman's books.

  • What the...

You just BLANKED OUT everything I SAID about the Catholic Church! What the hell? You guys are really stubborn...

  • best part of the movie

  • Some people just dont have the mind to THINK! It is a book! Not the truth... so why is everyone saying its "blasphemy" as it is an idea in one guys head saying that "the Church" is hiding the deepest secrets. That was his idea not the truth to put in a book to make it more interesting. And the fact that other worlds is blasphemy is the Lion the witch and the wardrobe blasphemy? I think not.

  • yea i agree.

i like the cowboy hes cool

  • Hell yeah!

  • is something wrong with the movie??

someoone please tell me why everyone is

    getting upset over this.

  • The reason every one is getting upset is because the religeos people think it goes against God etc because it deals with the theory of other worlds.

  • thankx for the info :)

  • well its weird because no one freaks out about Naria, The Wizard Of OZ, and stuff like that

  • Only because it's direct meaning is killing God. Thats what all the fuss is about. Philip Pullman said so himself. He wants to kill god and eradicate religion. But I dont care about the meaning of it. I love the actual story.

  • huh?

y is every one getting worked up over this movie?

    can someone please tell me?!

  • i really don't know... something about the evil guys looking like catholics or something like that...

  • "Eh looky here, renforciments."

  • I can't wait to see this movie. As for the religion part of it-- It was a book, just like the BIBLE was a book. So get over it.

  • the polar bear was realy cute if he stands

  • "Ah, lookie here, reinforcements."

    LOL

  • The movie is terrific. If you like to be entertained and aren't afraid of free thought then go see it.

  • UserNamesAreDumb, please do us all a great big favour and fuck off.

  • i just saw this film, and its great.

its a shame some people are not allowed to see it

  • yah my friend isn't allowed to see it. she says she doesn't want to but i bet she'd love it if she didn't know about the whole religion nonsense

  • i saw this movie awesome.

  • Aww i love urick bernason :D

If thats how u spell it lol

  • iorek byrnison..

thats how its in the books atleast...

and his enemy was supposed to be iofur raknison.. but i heard they changed his name in the movie..

  • Hellraiserprajwal, they haven't changed the name of Iofur Raknison...

  • they have, they changed it to ragnor :(

  • mabey its just pronounced differently than its spelt? idk.

  • Its Iorek Byrnison.

  • 1. It's not a comeback for the PoC movie (which was terrible). Do your homework: the books were published in 1996.

    2. If you can't respect other people's opinions, you have no business commenting on them. Much less "damning them to hell" by yourself. Who are YOU to say who's going to hell or heaven? That sounds pretty big-headed, even for a christian.

  • ill tell you who he is...he is a person who just did place a comment to express his oppinion and what are you going to do about it

  • Nothing, of course. I just think it was an exceptionally nasty opinion.

  • nasty against who?

  • The people he said, under religious context, were going to be tortured for the rest of their eternal lives. Unless you think that's a great thing to say about people.

  • Oh god how i hate youtube arguments. Why are you guys arguing about which is better out of LOTR and this. Just coz they're done by new line cinema why would you compare them. And why on every single trailer of this film are there people arguing about religion. stop it its pathetic! You're gunna have a different oppinion to others and thats fine. Deal with it.

  • who is 'his dark materials???

  • his dark materials is the trilogy

  • philip pullman

  • I actually disagree megaman0511. His Dark Materiels is at least twice as good as Harry Potter (keep in mind, I'm a big Potter fan). It's level of writing, subject matter, and concept is just . . .superior. And as for LOTR . . .while there is major argument to be done here, I have to say that HDM is better. LOTR manages to create a massive, developed, and intelligent world, but the characters were just . . .flat.

  • Pullman did a bad job on the characters as well...So I guess there is no way of saying which is better. There even better authors out there.

  • lotr chars were flat? dude have you read the appendices? or the other books like silmarillion? read them and tell those words again AND I"LL MEET U IN HELL..

  • hellraiserprajwal, first learn proper grammar, and then bring your opinion, there we can all read and understand at the same time, don't you think ;)?

  • Fine then... LotR characters were flat? Have you read the appendices? Or the other books like silmarillion? Read them and i'll dare you to say the same again...

Make sure you know all there is to know about something before making comments about it, which in this case, are totally false...

  • And i'm not saying HDM is not good... Its fabulous in its own way, but it does not have the depth of LotR... Another thing would be HDM is more appealing to the casual novel reader than the bulky LotR... And thats just the books... As it is, it seems the LotR movies had a LOT more success than the TGC...

  • Ok I do agree with you hellraiserprajwal.

  • As to this book being anything like Harry Potter, Tolkeins works of art, or Narnia ...forget it! Someone clearly hasn't read them. There is just no possible comparison! Although, there are some "newbies" out there that come close to being great written works of art - His Dark Materials isn't one of them ... even if it's been out for a while and had a movie made.

  • I'm a Christian and personally I don't give a shit about faith or God. All I know was that both the books and the movie were excellant and they deserve praise for their creativity.

  • then you are not a christian argefalcon LOL...your statement is nonsense.

  • Okay fine than I was only born a christian and I no longer am one

  • Now you make sense argetfalcon..care to share why you're not longer one?

  • I couldn't stand the hypocricy. They always seemed to judge so fast and there are so many rules to follow. They say they hate homosexuals and yet I hear stories of priests molesting young boys. People who are christian, as I find with most other religion seem to treat God like he is more of a burden than a priviledge. Not to mention I am fascinated with evolution and despite all the prove it presents the church seems to ignore it.

  • I have encountered that as well argetfalcon but it does not make me lose my faith in God. As God says, do not put your eyes on man. I know what the church is doing, but I go to this small church, people are really awesome and not judgemental at all...Though most of the churches are very judgmental and it seem slike you're carrying a burden yourself. I agree but you shouldn't lose your faith in God as God has nothing to do with what people are doing since we all got free will, they will pay

  • it finally comes down to whether you choose to believe in yourself, or some godforsaken imaginary person...

  • I have done research on this subject, in college. And I have found nothing that says what you just said. And what are you saying there is more prove for creation than evolution if that is so how do you explain fossils. A bumblebee flys because it's light weight and it beats it's wings over a thousand times per second. It is you who needs to do research instead of just believing in a two thousand year old scripture that has been altered hundreds of times.

  • i haven't read any 2000 year old scripture that says anything about the points for and against creation so i have no idea what you're talking about

  • I was taking about the Bible.

  • do you really believe that the earth counts only thousands of years?! unbelievable!!

  • umm the earth is actually billions of years old. Where did you hear it was 6000?

  • scientist know that the sun is slowly dying, loosing heat. By reversing this, they've found that beyond 6000 years ago the sun would be too hot for there to be any kind of plant life, water etc. That's where i heard it

  • you are so fucking stupid, it just amazes me. ask any scientist, any scientist at all and they will inform you that you're so completely wrong.

  • Thank you!

  • the earth is 4.3 billion years old, dumbass. and creationism is a load of bull.

  • this movie doesnt even have anything against God. its the stupid books, that lure the kids after the movie. these books are terrible for christian kids, since they lack strong faith. if you are a responsible parent who cares about your 10 year old boy/girl then u should not buy them the book trilogy. if your an adult your a moron for not seeing this movie. i have strong faith so i dont have to worry about what some idiot atheist has to say about God. its only bad for the kids

  • Ok you want a book review? here it is.I read all three books. I thought they all were well written - the first being a fantastic read ... even given the anti-catholic views you can't help but notice throughout the stories. I don't see the books as detrimental to anyone's faith. It is what it is ...

  • well written fiction - albeit you wouldn't mind the girl being replaced with a more likeable main character (and maybe gotten rid of some of the daemons. Some were just downright creepy). Someone should have taken notes from Tolkein, Rowling and Lewis. Unfortunately, the movie was a major disappointment. Like Timeline, Da Vinci Code and a few others out there, DON'T READ THE BOOK BEFORE YOU SEE THE MOVIE! You'll be severely disappointed.

  • Would I let my nine year old read this book? Probably not right now - He has read and enjoyed Lewis and Rowling, but I don't think he's quite ready for Pullman. As my wife a librarian, she would reserve this book for the high-schoolers....maybe even jr. high depending on their level of understanding, but not any younger. Thankfully, we aren't lacking great reads before he's old enough for this one.

  • Iorek Byrnison doesn't get NEARLY enough credit as he deserves, like he got in the book (WHich happened to be 50X better)

  • I am a fairly conservative catholic (it saddens me that i have to assure the christians here of this before i go on) and I was interested to see how stupidly, aggressively, insultingly, close-mindedly and generally intolerantly (one of the more unchristian qualities in the world) you all argue...if it can be called arguing. If you do indeed think we're going to hell, for watching this, why don't you put your opinions forward like a civilised human being. Just a thought.

  • PS can't wait to see this most awesome of FANTASY films

PPS freedom of expression is based on the idea that most people can interpret things objectively without misconstruing it for offence - try that.

  • This movie totally makes me wanna throw caution to the wind, cut my body up, and praise the devil. lmao.

  • i wish people would stop posting crap about religion on here. can't we just enjoy the movie?

  • oh, shut up.

  • I would love to shut up the stupid movie

  • I feel sorry for you. This is a fantasy movie, so stop saying stupid crap about religion. Nobody is forcing to watch this if you don´t want to, and you can believe what you want. And why does it hate God? because peolples souls walk beside them? Didnt Lord Voldemort break his soul in seven pieces or something like that? No one said anything to JK. Rowling. So please, let people do whatever they want.

  • if you dont approve of the movie DONT WATCH IT...its that simple

  • i would not waste my money on it. I heard about it before even the movies came out.

  • Just shut the hell up!

  • the graphics are amazing!

  • There is nothing anti-christian about this movie. If anything, it emphasizes strong moral values and such. Just because its a fairy tale doesn't mean its trying to bring people away from God. You might as well say that watching The Little Mermaid will send you to Hell.

I watched this movie (b/c I read the book and enjoyed it) and must emphasize one thing if nothing else....IOREK ROCKS HARDCORE MAN!!!

This movie has a few of the coolest fight-scenes ever.

  • Isn't the dude with the cowboy hat from Ghostrider? o_O

  • Sounds like it.

  • Dear rosieisahippo,

What the fuck is your deal? Seriously buddy, you've been posting your inane little comments all over this board with the intention of, what? Changing people's mind by saying "fucking liberals" and make jokes about scientology? What is it you want 'rosieisahippo'? For everyone to be as miserable as you? I know puberty sucks bud, but we all have to go through it.

  • I just read The Golden Compass. Now, I'm half-way thru the 2nd book, The Subtle Knife. Both are simply fantastic. I wouldn't miss this movie for the world!

  • Hey its me again and im gunna c da movie 2morrow and itll rock in its sox ok all u uber religious

people are starting to piss me off and yes my CATHOLIC FRIENDS who go to church every week are going to and the funniest thing is taht we all attend a catholic school lol isnt that funny as o idk HELL

  • Evil always wears a good looking mask, figure it out people...

  • i have a contract with the child lol

  • Wow I felt like I was watching the book. The door he burst out of, Lyra's interaction with him, the gun man, everything was how I pictured it. Yay I am so happy. Perhaps now I can recover from the ruination of Queen of the Damned, X-Men, and Silent Hill.

  • Why do people like the idea of burning for eternity? Yes, i am a Christian, BUT BUT BUT, i am not just spewing words here. Look, even if i wasn't religious, i still would not like the idea of burning. I like the idea of being in an eternal golden, happy area. So why is every excited about going to hell? I just don't understand it. Yes, this movie encourages Athiesim, but at least its not encouraging Satanism.

  • Let it be, I was raised strictly when it comes to religion and it made me miserable. I support religion, but I do not support organized religion. It is up to us as individuals to decide how to worship our deity whoever it may be. So long as they dont cause harm to others its ok in my book. so let it be!!!!!!!!

  • this movie will be amazing

  • (continued from below)

those that condone killing and that type of thing, but really that is so ignorant and is unexcusable in the world we live in today. Ironically given our technology and advances so few of us take advantage of what seperates us from other animals, reason. You are one of these individuals i wish you the best of luck in uprooting your ignorance and religious extremism. Perhaps one day you will see what i mean.

  • Jewel150 it is people like you that will have us living in a world like Farenheit 451. Is it so terrible to have an imagination? Does it have to be interpreted as devil worship or god forsaken literature simply because it doesnt preach the word of god? (Your god to be specific) I am not against any religions in any way, except

  • I am soooo jazzed about seeing this tomorrow.

I hope it follows the book!

  • :) Awesome.

  • Take it easy on the spastic attack there bud, no need to impress your own opinions on other people. If you don't like the movie then you don't have to go see it. The books are just that- books. They are merely presenting a fantasy story in which the catholic church has its faults displayed. The key word in the previous sentence is 'fantasy.' I can't pass full judgement on the film though as I have not seen it, nor has anyone else as of yet. The books though are excellent in my opinion.

  • hey piss head!

    go bitch somewhere else!

FUCKING RELIGIOUS EXTREMISTS LIKE YOU ARE THE REAL PEOPLE WHO HATE HUMANITY.

  • I could care less if i went to hell.. if it fucking existed!!!!

  • you'll be singing another tune after the first 1,000 years of burning but not burning.

Oooh feel the burn.Isn't it sexy?

  • Dickface.

Read the book, and put down your forced-religion opinions.

  • The one thing about religion, is that some people try to force it upon people like their religion is the right one or that you just have to, no questions asked, and in my opinion that's just BS. That is why theres so many people who are atheist or those who are against that specific religion. I'm catholic, I believe in God and in Jesus, but even that, I do admit there faults into it. People are just close-minded.

  • Liberalism666

  • We had to suffer through The Passion, why can't you see this? I guess the lack of 2 hours of torture is a downside.

  • I'm christian, and I don't see too much of a problem here. I could still see this movie and believe in Christ. Besides, I heard from someone they tried to edit out all the anti-Christian stuff in the U.S....

  • You can't really edit the Anti-Christian stuff out because for the most part all of it is metophorical, and the stuff that is metophorical are major parts of the film. The Gobblers for example represent the Catholic church, and there is no way of removing them.

  • Oh... I see what you mean. I wouldn't really know about the Gobblers or anything, because I'm not allowed to have anything to do with the movie or the books, (thanks mom!) but I'm also guessing that most of this is subliminal messaging, and people may be influenced without them realizing it. I just wish that none of this got out, and I could just seee this movie and decide for myself...

  • yes the books are freaking anti christrain -_- im not having a damn spaz attack over it its just a movie after all, and why the hell is everyone so worked up about it anyways just because its against your religion doesnt mean its bad jesus fucking christ get a life people.

  • >_> Sure Im Jewish, Ive seen some really antisimetic thing, but I dont give a shi, So theres a movie that 'insults' christianity. Borat insults jews. So? I have read the book and it is my favorite(or one of them)books of all time and I think that it is well done. Guess what? IT ISNT ANTI CHRISTIAN!

  • Phillip Pullman has actually been quoted as saying that his Dark Materials are not exactly anti christian, but still points out its faults. And Borat is making fun of religion, not trying to disprove it.

  • :o Wow, sounds like a bunch of people don't like this movie. -Trying to decide whether I should watch this or Alvin & The Chipmunks- ._.

  • Golden Compass. Period.

  • You know, it's funny. I never had a problem with the church, or Christians while I was reading this book. But now, after listening to bunch of a really stupid people bitch for months, I'm starting to go down the anti-church path . . .thank you stupid people. You've damned one more soul to hell.

  • That would be unleashing

  • what is your problem! have u read the book even?!?

you are so retarded!!!!! AGAIN WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM!?!? F U!

  • hell, can u read?

  • You don't seem very Christian, being as you swore 3 times in this comment, so why do you care?

  • you know everyones not christain and you have to get over, and if you have a problem with this then don't watch the clips and commet and eveyone as there point of veiw too so why don't you think about that, i am a christain and i look at others point of view first, i don't just go yell at people for not loving god, b/c somtime they could be born into a family who were athiest and didn't really have a chose but this is your opion so why don't you just think before you say!

  • If a movie were made bashing Judaism or Islam, or Buddhism, people would be up in arms. Why do Christians have to just "shut up & take it"? Total double standard. No, everyone is not Christian & not everyone has to be, but why make and promote a movie that is clearly meant to be insulting to Christianity?

  • i completely agree this is a bunch of bullshit all the books did weas bash catholics so i dont plan on going to see it

  • Let me guess...never read the books? Didn't even hear of them until your local pastor told you they were "eeeevil?"

I'm betting you didn't read that the US Council of Catholic Bishops said the books were "intelligent and well-crafted entertainment?"

Yeah, I thought not. People like you don't read.

  • "Passion of the Christ" anyone?

  • This comment is for those who say that there aren't movies denouncing other religions...i'm pretty sure that Passion of the Christ is a great example of one that does.

  • why does the exterior of that building look exactly like the interior of a Russian Orthodox Church?!

  • in the book several of the police died right?? but here he doesnt even swing!!! and they dont fure!!!!!! This movie is going to be crap.......

  • Fire i meant to say..

  • it's not THAT bad, but you are right, they eliminated 90% of the violence and they have one rule: NO CHILD DIES. That sucks^^

However, they have at least some violence, in the epic battles; there is no blood, but you see the daemons really EXPLODE, and that's a good thing.

  • if that's your biggest pet peeve.

    you shall be sorely disappointed.

  • the movie is a bit watered down. but no 12 or 11 yr old would be aloud to see it if it were like the book. and thats the age its targeted for.

  • the movie is rubbish compared to the book, all mention of god is taken out and the ending is ruined. cause its not the same as the books

  • Actaully, I think the author even said it was about "Killing God"

  • No. In the book there is no mention of god, only "The Authority", whom is, if I remember correctly, the first angel CLAIMING to be god.

  • I too am really excited about this upcoming movie. However, I've been reading alot of the comments flaming it, saying that in the movie they kill God and how it essentially attacks religion. After reading all of them, I've kinda been getting the idea that a lot of people haven't actually read the series and have been taken sections of the later books out of context.

  • SPOILER ALERT DON'T READ FURTHER

In the 3rd book, they go to war against "heaven" or basically the angel army. However, the guy they do kill isn't God but a renegade angel who claimed to be. At one point they also refer to him as the great deceiver, a name also associated with the devil. In my opinion, they don't actually kill God, but are in fact killing Satan and the corruption he inspires in churches that haven been given too much power and no one to answer to.

END OF SPOILERS END OF SPOILERS

  • So....even though the Magesterium does bear a strong resemblance to the Catholic church, the version it resembles is the Catholic church of old when it was still a political ruling power in Europe and at which time it did have a lot of problems with corruption of authority.

Either way, I loved the book series and will definitely be in theaters for this one.

Sorry for the awkward posting, I meant for this start with the lowest one posted on top and this one to be read last. Oh well.

  • RE:SPOILER ALERT DON'T READ FURTHER

Er...you do realize that in the books there IS no God or Satan, only dust, and its love of matter, the whole meaning of existence.

  • Your opinion about the author's intent is wrong. In his words, from an interview with the Washington Post on 2/19/01. entitled The Last Word.

"I'm trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief." - Phillip Pullman

The books, the movie, the author, all anti-Christian. Do some reading and get the facts for yourself.

  • I could care less about his intent. Regardless of what it is, this is what I took away from the book. This is my interpretation.

  • Bullshit! Pullman doesn't even know what day it is. I've read lots of comments from him and he contradicts himself at every turn now. He wrote a great trilogy, and the response to that trilogy got out of hand and he simply can't keep everyone happy, especially when they're waving a huge cheque under his nose to endorse this SHIT screenplay - He's a tit who wrote a great trilogy, but that's all he's got. If you don't believe me,
