I know it's a joke you made, but red's the most recognizable opposite of blue, which is applied here.

The TF2 war was started when two brothers wanted what each other had and started a war between each other. RED and BLU Teams were both made at the same time without each others' knowledge, and the Announcer is deliberately pitting them against each other with neither team going to win for good.
