It came out for Bono's dad and it was just after my grandfather had died.

When we went to the concert in Melbourne they had a man walking up on the screen while the song was playing. And it looked exactly like my pa.

this has been my favorite u2 song for almost eight years now...bono originally said it was for his kids, then he realized he had written it for his father, who died soon after the song was released. You can tell how emotional Bono is with the song in every performance of it. I wish more people would realize how great this hidden gem really is...listen to the solo, the lyrics, the flying guitar sound, bono's emotion in saying his father's name, and when he sings "I'm a man, im not a child..." wow

you are 100% correct. i agree with everything you said. this is one of there best songs with SO much heartfelt emotion. lyrics are amazing. however i beleive his dad was still alive when he wrote it. he passed away while they were writing for "atom bomb". you are correct about him writting it for his kids then realizing it was more from his dads perspective. such a great song.

It brings tears to my eyes. My mom died 1 yr after Bonos Dad, plus my kids are all grown and don't really need me anymore. The empty nest. And now we live so far from each other. My kids in Milwaukee Wisconsin, and my husband and i in South Fl. Had to go where the work was, but I miss them and my granddaughter dearly.
