"Bent Bolt was actually Teddy Randazzo who died in 2003 but was a 50's rock icon who co-wrote over 800 songs that were covered by such luminaries as Frank Sinatra and Dionne Warwick. "The Mechanical Man" was included in Kenny Everett's 'World's Worst Records Shows' "
I recall him playing it in the late 1970s with the observation that it took the combined intellects of 7 people to write the lyric!
There's a version that starts out with a bunch of junk being rattled around along with the drum intro. I was really hoping this was it. But yeah, this is a "great" song! There's some great melodic bass work in it. I also blame Dr. Demento for turning me on to this track.
Electroid robo-funked vocoderesque madness from 1966! I am in arcane pop-cultural heaven and I have had to listen to the track half a dozen times before my brain would accept the fact this is real and not a product of my deranged imagination....just listen to that proto-motorik rhythm track! Stockhausen, Boulez and Cage move over...Bent Bolts & The Nuts were the real avant-garde of the sixties! Many many thanks for sharing this....whats the flipside all about I wonder?!?
@jackamo23 I had a copy of this as a kid. It was a promo only copy and the flip side had Teddy Randazzo doing a conventional instrumental titled "Sweet and Sour" or something to that effect.
Heard this for the first time today on a kids Sirus program. LOVE the song but the vocal gets old before the music. Can anyone recommend any other songs that are very similar to this music style but with out the robot voice :) ?

Oh my God! I owned this record as a small boy, and played it over and over. What a serious flashback.

I wouldn't care at all if she looked like a garbage can. One of the great lyrics of all time.

First heard by me on John Peel about 1981.
I didn't actually realise it was supposed to be a robot voice - I actually thought it was supposed to be Popeye the Sailor!
I also thought the lyric was "does anyone here know a rubber girl....." Hmmm. Yes, well.....
