You would have thought we had learned our lesson with loans after the mortgage crisis.
People who can not pay back loans should not be loaned money.
Does ANYONE honestly think the car companies will pay back loans? Does anyone honestly think they will ever be ina position to do so? I don't....no one else with a brain does...so how can we GIVE them money knowing it will never be paid back and knowing they will just ask for more?
The books were cooked, when nobody admitted the deregulated power deals were INFLATIONARY. Now that no re-regulation preceded bail, fail, and sail off to stimuli, Obama will do a desperate pratfall, on TV, see also Rimmer, Chris Barrie's character, from BBC/Red Dwarf. Got an 'H' on YOUR forehead, and you aren't a funny guy named 'Hunter?' Something's WRONG, President SATAN. You are gambling against your own arms and legs, like only a runway narcissist could, at a runaway riot!
its not the japs. its our own american car companies making crappy cars to do more trade ins a year and sell more car parts who destroy their own reputation. they did in fact dig their own grave. and they had to learn the hard way unfortunatelly. of course toyota crushed them. their reputation for reliability goes all the way to their early days and so is honda. but we are already starting to see some improvement on american cars lets just hope is not too late.
hoen:"its our own american car companies making crappy cars"
And the Unions making the cars more expensive and not at all competitive with foreign cars. If the quality was less but the price was less, I could see where they could still be okay, but the combination of poor quality and expense make them worthless. You can bail them out now, but you will continue to bail them out forever until the unions leave and the prices come down.
We should be trying to rise our pay up and not trying to lower the higher wage workers pay. It does not make sense that you find the need to drag down working families you should be ashamed of yourself.
Look up downfall of the US economy, and you will find American workers non union or union are not at fault. It is our government that was been controlled by the ultra rich power base.
I think the union is partially responsible for the poor economy. If not, then Why does Obama conitinue to say the american auto industries jobs are vital to the nation when Nissan and Toyota are also loosing employees and nothing is said about it?
Obama says only US auto industries is vital because Nissan and Toyota are being bailed out by their own government. The unions are and have been giving give backs even before the financial system crashed.
I agree, if the Big 3 were doing well, they should raise the pay. But they're not. So they need to cut pay.Just like any well-managed company. If the company can't afford to pay the employees a certain amount, then, unfortunately, the employees take a pay-cut. The pay then goes up when the company does well. Basic economics.
I do believe the Government is screwing us all. But what it especially cares about are Michigan and Ohio because they bolth hold a number of electoral votes, large number of unions workers. Make the union workers happy, you'll get re-elected.
I was disappointed when we lost but what should I expect? Bush ran the deficit to the ground and a very lousy communicator. I just hope now the republicans work to conserve our money while, it's being obvoise, the democrates spend it or "invest it".
About the union vote, I can see reasons for having unions. But I also realize the government favors them over small business. I don't see the government bailing out Starbucks, Wal-Mart.
The reason why they are in trouble is because they are not selling, the reason they are not selling is because the consumer has no money to buy these cars. If you wanna help the auto industry then help the consumers and don't just blindly throw money at the CEO's of these companies.
The American auto industry can help itself by shortening union contracts or not have union at all. This the main issue.
An average union worker get $150,000/ year. But this isn't take home pay. Most of it goes to state of the art health benefits and paid time off. Even if they're laid off. To my knowledge, none of the foreign car companies have unions.
I the past few months Nissan and Toyota have laid of 1,000's of workers. Obama doesn't mention it because they're not union.
I know somone that's works fo Chrysler as a skilled trades person and his pay for 2008 was just under 70K. I dont know ware you got that 150K figure. Why are people trying to bring down wages when they should be trying to bring their wages up.
I said the average worker gets 150,000 per year. But this isn't take home pay. Maybe ask your friend what kind of health benefits he/she gets and if he/ she gets paid time off. I'm not just making this crap up. I get alot of my info form the Wall Street Journal. A very recognized business paper throughout the world.
An official said $13.4 billion of the money would be available this month and next, $9.4 billion for General Motors Corp. and $4 billion for Chrysler LLC. Both companies have said they soon might be unable to pay their bills without federal help. Ford Motor Co. has said it does not need immediate help.
Allowing the auto companies to collapse is not a responsible course of action," President George W. Bush said. He said that a bankruptcy was unlikely to work for the auto industry at this time and would deal "an unacceptably painful blow to hardworking Americans" across the economy.
Bush only said this to look good for the unions. What about the hardworking americans who now have to pay for the bail-out? What about the hardworking americans who had their own business and now have to file for bankruptcy?
Its not the working people of America thats the problem, unions are working people. Unions are not some evil entity that we should destroy they are families. The real bandits of the bail outs are the ultra rich political power base controlled by the financial industry.
Please do some research on the Glass-Steagle Act that was put into law after the financial collapse of the 1930 this law was in place for over 40 years.
Our government on behalf of the financial industry passed the Gramm Leach Bliley Act. I will not point fingers I will give you that to decide. But this law led to the financial collapse of 2008-2009.
Thats why big corporation like this need unions to keep them in check, keeping jobs in the U.S. is part of the job security of a union contract. The middle class is under attack, I dont think the fat cat politicians are trying to bust the unions because its good for you and I. We dont have lobbyists like the big business and Wall Street guys buying politicians.
My thinking is I still have my job for now, but if things keep going down the tubes and we lose more jobs you or I will be next, I think people that are speaking out should let people know what there motives are.
I dont know if some of the people that post on YOU TUBE are from the U.S. because it sounds like they want the U.S. fail in a bad way, this is not about saving some CEOs job this is about the middle class way of life
People are mad at the price of cars because they are making less and less of a living wage, the main thing I keep hearing is WHO THE HELL CAN AFFORD A NEW CAR
This is a result of the job loss to low wage countries
I understand that people are pissed off at the US auto makers, but we need to keep good paying jobs and not race each other to the bottom of the pay scale. Also we need to have competing Auto Company to drive innovations, quality and lower prices
GM has two times as many models that get 30 mpg or better than its nearest competitor.
GM has eight hybrids on the road today with a total of 20 planned by 2012. What's more, the 2-Mode Chevy Tahoe fullsize SUV was named Green Car of the Year in Los Angeles last November.
The new Ford Fusion Hybrid and Mercury Milan Hybrid beat the Toyota Camry Hybrid by 6 miles per gallon.
Do you really expect people to buy the Bullshit your selling? GM, FORD,and Chrysler are all terrible old dinosours that don't innovate their cars. THey are still gas guzzlers! And the fusion and mercury hybrid you so praise is almost impossible to find. Not to mention the price tag on them is rediculous!! Besides, the car makers should be allowed to fail. They stopped listening to the customer and ended up losing business because of it. Now they want our tax dollars to fix it. HOW IS THAT FAIR?
The facts are the facts, the US auto makers are changing for the better, and your right on one thing its our tax dollars and I rather have my taxes spent on the American middle class workers then some Wall Street big shots or a war to control an oil field in the Middle East.
We need to preserve and create jobs, not try to bust unions just because they vote for one party or the other. You can keep buying your foreign cars but 50% of the market will keep buying US cars with the profits staying in the US and not Japan.
If that were true, that 50% will keep buying U.S. cars, then why do they need a bailout plan? Where are all their profits going, huh? WE NEED to hold companies responsible for failing. Otherwise, lets just give ever single company a bail out when it starts to go under! Hey, Kmart is losing ground, what about them. Why not Ace hardware? I could go on and on. Maybe American companies should look at what foriegn co. are doing and try to be more like them since they are having better success!
They need aLoanbecause the wall serest braintrust screwed up the credit system, and sucked up billions with ponzi schemes. Also Toyota sales are down 48% and it is only a mater of time before they need loans from there government and the people of Japan will get behind there workers, what we need to do is support one of our few manufacturing bases that is left.Kmart and Ace do not support 3 million jobss and are not linked to national security!Hay,we can have communist china build us some tanks
THe auto makers get their money from car sales regardless if people pay their loans or not! If you were smart, you would know that. The only people affected by credit is the banks and the people they lend to. And you can make fun of China all you want, but right now, they are kicking the crap out of our economy and manufacturing more products than us. Obviously they are doing something right. Besides, half the crap you buy that says U.S.A. on it is still made elsewhere. Ask the automakers.
Hello people we have 3 million people unemployed and losing there houses the last thing on there mind is buying a Toyota or any other car, we have been losing jobs and work to places like China that pay slave labor wages and we keep on racing to the bottom, The government has gave U.S. company tax brakes to move US jobs overseas for years and like Ross Perot said in the 90s that sucking sound of jobs going over seas is hitting us now.
If just one of America's car companies is allowed to fold, an estimated 2.5 million jobs will be lost resulting in a domino effect that could make the current state of the economy look like the "good old days."
Unlike the airline industry where people have been flying on Chapter 11 airlines since 9/11 bankruptcy will lead to liquidation and the loss of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of jobs. Michigan would be ground zero, but the economic fallout will impact all 50 states and the District of Columbia:
3) "World" depressions/recessions (which we are obviously in right now) come & go as they ALWAYS have and ALWAYS will.
4) I agree that a bail out is stupid! But obviously not for the reasons that you point out. The market NEEDS to correct itself, a bailout only prolongs the inevitable and is a futile attempt to spread the recession out over time .. to avoid a depression .. but I don't believe that the taxpayer should be theoretically forced to by the Big 3 products in a free country = Bailout
Funny how these car companies are losing business because no one wants their gas guzzling cars. And yet our government is going to bail them out. I dare one person to say we have the best country now. You can't say it and it be truthfull. The sad thing is, the more our government gives out huge loans that the Tax payers can't pay back, the closer our counrty is getting to economic failure. SO when the second great depression hits, I hope everyone has plenty of food. It is inevitable.
1) the big 3 can't compete because of the unions. $73 VS $43/HR are factual numbers. They sell TONS of cars and trucks and in fact the Chevy truck gets better gas mileage than the Toyota, Nissan or any other truck made SIMPLE FACT!
2) The best country can only be a matter of opinion: My opinion is that the country that has provided the most humanitarian aid in the history of civilization consistently for over a hundred years (FACT .. BY FAR) is still the best country in the world USA!
Midsize cars The Toyota Camry and Honda Accord gasoline variants are all but identical (slightly worse or better depending on the engine) compared to the Chevy Malibu and Ford Focus
no other country on the planet is this stupid. we have the most useless brains in the world kissing those smelly foreign asses everyday to see just how much than can give away. at some point, there will be a tremendous backlash for those who Americans who are attempting to destroy this country.
We can kick and scream all we want but the government will do what ever they want to do and we cant stop it, so the Detroit auto makers will get the money the same way the banks got the money and the tax payers will pay for it, all we can do about it is hope that some people will keep there jobs and the US auto makers learn something from it so they can make a better and cheaper car and pay the loans back in the future. So buy the car that you like to drive.
The type of bankruptcy that I'm talking about does not mean that every plant shuts down and all of those peoople lose their jobs. It means that the company restructures, they DO cut jobs and start over after a restructuring. I'm sure that many people would lose their jobs, but the big 3 can also get OUT FROM UNDER THE UNIONS GIANT THUMB & restructure somewhere else to become profitable, like Toyota & Nissan who build cars in Tenn. where the unions can't TAKE OVER THEIR COMPANY! GM = 9.37M units
For example, the European Union does not allow any of its members to have a deficit over 3% of GDP. Germany imposed an additional sales tax in January to lower its deficit so it can return to EU standards.
At the end of 2006, the U.S. current account deficit was an unprecedented $856.7 billion, an 8% increase from 2005's record of $791.5 billion. This is 6.6% of the $13 trillion U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a level that would be of concern to most countries. (Source: Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. International Transactions in 2006, April 2007
A concern about the U.S. trade deficit is the statement it makes about the competitiveness of the U.S. economy itself. By purchasing goods overseas for a long enough period of time, U.S. companies no longer have the expertise or even the factories to make those products. Try finding a pair of shoes made in the U.S. As the U.S. loses competitiveness, it has even lower quality jobs and the standard of living declines
Of course, this can only go on as long as there are no other customers for the pizza, and the pizza place can afford to loan you the money. One day the lending countries may decide to ask the U.S. to repay the debt. On that day, the party is over!!!!!!!
An ongoing trade deficit could be detrimental to the nations economy over the long term because it is financed with debt. In other words, the U.S. can buy more than it makes because the countries that it buys from are lending it the money. It is like a party where youve run out of money, but the pizza place is willing to keep sending you pizzas and put it on your tab.
In 2007, the U.S. imported $475 billion, up from $443 billion in 2006, and exported $146 billion, also up from $130 billion in 2006. The major consumer products that the U.S. imported more than it exported were Drugs, Consumer Electronics, Clothing, Household Goods, and Furniture.ALL ITEMS THAT ONCE WERE MADE IN THE USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The problem for me is how do the auto industy tie the money directly into the american people. If they keep going as business as usual then how does it help families. They should let these guys fall. They are the ones responsible for the high intrest rates all over america. Now these are the same people you want to bail out Please. That money should be put in the consumers hands not the auto industry. At some point these companys have to be reliable for their actions.
Obviously we didn't buy enough of their products! Now they say that we should pay for that or the economy will crash!
If I make bubble gum and it sucks; nobody buys it! Should I be allowed to FORCE the taxpayers to pay for my failure?
If a company fails to compete, they fail to compete! The American government should not be in the business of using FEAR to force free Americans to basically buy my lousy bubble gum! How many times should bail out Chrysler? DUH!
Actually, we will not all be out of jobs if the big 3 go under. we will necessarily lose about 100K jobs, that could rebound quickly because the big 3 would simply restructure, LEAVE MICHIGAN and go to a state that actually supports profitable industry (no unions ... like Tennessee ... where the profitable companies build cars and pay nearly half the wages to their workers) What we would get is a more efficient American auto industry that would actually have a chance to compete!
Not true, the auto industry has one of the largest economic multipliers of any sector of the U.S. economy, GM Ford and Chrysler employ 239,000 Americans and 775,000 retirees and surviving spouses rely on the auto makers for pensions and benefits. Think the collapse of the US autos will just affect Detroit and the mid west? Think again what about the suppliers that supplier not only the US autos but the foreign makers also.
In 2007 the auto industry purchased $156 Billion in parts supporting jobs in 50 states, they are the largest purchasers of steel, plastic, iron, copper, aluminum, computer chips and so on. 610,000 works are employed by suppliers with a pay roll of $54 Billion in 2007
14,000 auto dealers are another cog spread across every state that employ 740,000 people with a payroll of $35 billion with 693.3 billion in new car sales with over $10 billion in tax revenues
Are you sure about that. Remember that these company's are the ones at fault here not the american consumer. Would should pay for their mistakes. That's a good idea. I don't see the government bailing out people who defaulted on their mortages. Now that's where the money should go, not so these exec's can finish where they left off. Come on man think about it.
Very well. Don't bail out the company. Bail out the employees. If the company cannot sustain itself then perhaps its not worth bailing out. A good start on helping our economy would be to stop importing vehicles from other countries.
The US Congress voted to allow Treasury Secretary Paulson to hand over to Wall Street buddies, Over 800 billion dollars, Thats for openers.
The US Treasury on their own have dispensed billions more to financial firms. The Federal Reserve, a private company owned by foreign bankers, refuses to identify who it has given the US money it has loaned out of thin air created from debt that will hobble our children and grand children
Automotive trade deficit in 2007. It imported $257 billion worth of cars, trucks and auto parts, and exported $121 billion, also up from $107 billion in 2006. and 2008 will be higher
The Proplem is greed people!! Not other countries. Cheap labor, and competing industries is life. But the truth be told, American industries are just flat out GREEDY! If you compare what American CEO's and business owners are getting paid compared to those around the rest of the world, you would be disgusted. And our government doesn't help. They only feed the fire by giving companies money to spend on themselves. Doesn't make any sense seeing that the common worker is the one with no money.
Absoulte Truth. But it comes off the back of hard working people is the hardest part to understand. Why let them get away with this. Like they didn't do anything wrong. Like you said look at their salaries.
The Auto Industry spends 50 million dollars each year on lobbyists for Washington. They donated 15 million dollars to campaigns this year.
So, how do we really think this is all going to turn out?
Eventually, this will get done, irregardless of what's best for the country. The fact is the congressman don't know what's best for the country with regards to the auto industry. They merely latch on to a point without understanding the big picture and pretend to be experts on the situation.
U.S. 666,000,000,000 trade deficit is the problem Thousands of U.S. layoffs occur every week. You only have to Google trade deficit to see the number of US jobs that are being cut across a wide range of industries. A high percentage of these layoffs are as a direct result of competition from foreign companies. Eventually, as more and more money leaves the U.S., our businesses will be powerless to prevent further such activity.
I read an article that implied the only thing America manufactures is debt. We lost our manufacturing capacity when we opened up our borders and encouraged corporations to employ cheap labor overseas.
Lobbyists have convinced congress that it's in the individuals best interest to take care of corporations, in what amounts to trickle down economics, but if congress really cared about the American people, they would consider "trickle up" economics.
True. For this country to get back on track you get this money back in the consumers hand. Give it back to the people who caused it is completey ludacris. They are going to do what they only know how to do and that is to be greedy.
Everbody gives the big 3 car companies hell over $30 bil. as they should but the BANKER CEOS get away with $750 billion to $3 trillion ....I SAY OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!
Congress sits in judgment of these companies, be it Auto indurty officials, or Wall Street Execs from AIG, and complain that these companies are poorly run, and that they need oversight.
Yet, the Treasury Department has no mechanism in place to track how institutions are using $150 billion in taxpayer money that the government injected into the banking system.
Maybe we should fix our government before we fix private corporations. What do you think?
I say we shouldn't bail them out and see what happens and if they don't go down and survive without help, great, but if they do go down i believe we should use a portion of what would have been the bailout money and give each person that lost a job that made less than 150 grand a year $100,000 dollars to help adjust with the lost and so if they need, they can move to somewhere where there are jobs available. Just an opinion but i think its their own fault for making HUMMERS when gas was $4 a gal
There are so many people losing jobs now that bailing out cars company's that are already dead is just fuckin stupid. We going to save car company's just to see new cars sitting on car lots rotting. A country full of unemployed workers and brand new cars to look at. And people in other countries don't buy american cars. They don't want to end up like us. They buy their own products to keep their economy going. Were the dumb asses that buy everything made in japan. This country is finished.
These are our Great leaders, maybe if they hold us at ransom longer, they can get more money out of us and it will be enough for them, and then they can set us free. But I won't hold my breath
This is an example of why we need to bailout the common people not brokerage and auto manufacturer CEO's. If Congress gave each USA citizen over 18 years old $250,000 it would SAVE money! This would help laid off workers and the rest of us. We'd pay our bills, buy cars and lots of other stuff - crisis over. Instead of trickle-down economics that help those already rich, it's time for some evaporation.
No Offense... but The Auto Industry Failing has been writen on the wall for a while. It's bullshit, the money you guy's make just for tightning a bolt. ANd it's not like you can point the blame finger at just anyone. The Union, is just as responsable if not more for this mess. U.A.W do some work.. then maybe we can talk bailout. Tough luck for the Midwest.
I don't understand why the CEOs are going to Washington with their hands out, why don't they just let the president of the U.A.W. negotiate with Washington? Let's be honest, that's what the money is for. The bailout has nothing to do with running a successful automobile manufacturing business which their competitors seem to be able to do in this country. The bailout has everything to do with honoring existing U.A.W. contracts. The hell with the CEOs, let the unions fix this mess!
Yeah, let's give these incompetent morons billions of dollars to build 2nd rate cars so they can screw this up more! Whatever happens to these workers is on their CEO's head. Honda's sales are doing great and the plant is right here in OHIO.
you must be one of these high school grade workers, ASS HAT!!! take the 20 mil that each of the big three take(which is WAY TOO much) and double it for the two years acutally why not multiply it by 10, THats 600 mil. we could deal with that!!!! HEy asshole they are asking for 34 B-B-Billion. the problem is the union and shitty ass workers like you! too bad for the mid west. stop smoking meth and make a good car and youll be ok. ASSHOLE!
Yes all the CEO at any company is over paid, but we cant let a couple bad apples spoil the bunch. People may think my job is safe and not tied to the automotive industry but it is in some way
Company CEO should be the one to suffer, the bail out should be for the workers. I don't agree with the bailout, they should fall and learn some less for their mistake in handling their business. They should think more about the people that are working so hard for their CEO success. Without the these employees, they would have a company to even talk about! This is soo terriable!!
1. Use the bailout money to re-educate workers to start other types of businesses.
2. Let the US auto mfrs collapse.
Who's to say that wont happen anyways. The executives of these companies really could care less about quality they are only concerned about themselves, let em crash.
That's ok Barack will fix it all. He'll bring socialized health care to this country and little by little we'll sink into the depths of Socialism. Welcome to the end of what made this country great to begin with.
Working class ha! The only ones that will benefit from the bailout are the spoiled union workers and the high paid executives. If they get a dime of my money I'll drive a Honda.
It's a combination of union greed and CEO stupidity that got the automakers where they are today. But, that's fine it's their business. They're free to run it any way they want. But, don't ask me to bail you out when you fail. The American automakers will fail but someone else will take their place. It's called natural selection. Only the strong SHOULD survive.
Dont shoot yourself in the foot, their jobs now your job next. Non union works are underpaid and overworked. We need to come toghther and build the middle class up not knock your neighbor down.
That's BS. There's a reason that we've went from over 30% Union to under 12%. Unions aren't competitive. It's a free country and they're free to do what they want. They don't have the right to take my money in the process.
I think the car companies now understand that they have to make an EREV it is the wave of the future. So I hope the volt is a baby step to mass produced EREV. We need to leave the past screw ups (EV1) in the past and (Be The Change)
The bailout is stupid. It's the government mandated hybrid cars that NOone wants to buy that is killing the big three. If they get this money I'll be driving a Honda.
The United States must fix its trade problems, particularly unfair trade with China, which has cost the nation more than 3.5 million manufacturing jobs this decade including more than 200,000 factory jobs in Pennsylvania
If we had more people in unions more people would make a living wage and have health insurance, big business has every one divide and brainwashed how can anyone live on less then $18 dollars an hour and pay for have health insurance and a lot of people do, I was like a lot of people and thought the unions workers are overpaid and underworked, but the truth be told non union works are underpaid and overworked. We need to come toghther and build the middle class up not knock your neighbor down.
Why !They'll Garauntee that the Car's you Buy will be made in the USA!!!They'll Garauntee that everyone can afford to But a Car,and they'll Give ,You good Payin JOB!!
Let them fail, go bankrupt let someelse oversee the restructuring. These CEOs are rich, egocentric, bastards. They have made poor cars for years, they have lost the market, get over it. Don't come begging for money. With Dem. Congress they will probably get what they want, they will be back for more. The country goes deeper in debt.Hastening the demise of the country. Prices soar, money not worth paper its printed on. Thanks Bush and Congress way to go, good job.Now my retirement is gone what do I do.
This is what don't understand. What is this money to be used for? How about lowering these damned service charges! The service dept. charges you anywhere from $100-$150 to inspect your car to tell you what's wrong. The parts you need cost under $100 and labor is over $100 per hour. Then you wonder why the average person goes to the corner mechanic where labor is only $70 an hour. They're piggy backing off the economic bailout. Can someone tell ME what the auto bailout's purpose is!!
They say they've been hurting for a few years now. Wonder how much money the execs. have been taking home during that time. Greed is the problem.
Capitalist solution---------
Give wouchers to tax payers for 20 thousand dollars that can only be used to buy cars from troubled car makers. This helps the car dealers, the economy and most of all the tax payers. Easy! If they can't survive after that, screw 'em!
The auto idustry is failing because of the inflated labor cost and corporate tax hikes. I say let them go bankrupt and renegotiate their union contracts or even better yet get rid of the union all together. UNIONS SUCK
GM burns 1 billion a month, 33 million a day, 1 million per hour, 20,000 per minute (around the loss they take for every 10 cars they sold), 95% of which is for labor cost.
should last time a year, ample time for them to find the graveyard.
Well...one year later we see that Obama saved the auto industry, saved a million jobs in the process, and we're being paid back.

We should be trying to rise our pay up and not trying to lower the higher wage workers pay. It does not make sense that you find the need to drag down working families you should be ashamed of yourself.
FluxCapacitor2008 2 years ago
Look up downfall of the US economy, and you will find American workers non union or union are not at fault. It is our government that was been controlled by the ultra rich power base.
FluxCapacitor2008 2 years ago
I think the union is partially responsible for the poor economy. If not, then Why does Obama conitinue to say the american auto industries jobs are vital to the nation when Nissan and Toyota are also loosing employees and nothing is said about it?
themou2008 2 years ago
Obama says only US auto industries is vital because Nissan and Toyota are being bailed out by their own government. The unions are and have been giving give backs even before the financial system crashed.
FluxCapacitor2008 2 years ago
Yea! I was disappointed in Toyota when the WSJ reported that they were seeking government aid as well.
themou2008 2 years ago
I agree, if the Big 3 were doing well, they should raise the pay. But they're not. So they need to cut pay.Just like any well-managed company. If the company can't afford to pay the employees a certain amount, then, unfortunately, the employees take a pay-cut. The pay then goes up when the company does well. Basic economics.
themou2008 2 years ago
Your anger is being focused on the wrong working families. The goverment screwed us all!
FluxCapacitor2008 2 years ago
I do believe the Government is screwing us all. But what it especially cares about are Michigan and Ohio because they bolth hold a number of electoral votes, large number of unions workers. Make the union workers happy, you'll get re-elected.
themou2008 2 years ago
Its OK for the government to pander to the rich, but if workers ban together the government should forget them.
FluxCapacitor2008 2 years ago
You are a die hard Republican right?
Just tell the truth you are pissed off that you lost the election because of the union vote.
FluxCapacitor2008 2 years ago
I was disappointed when we lost but what should I expect? Bush ran the deficit to the ground and a very lousy communicator. I just hope now the republicans work to conserve our money while, it's being obvoise, the democrates spend it or "invest it".
About the union vote, I can see reasons for having unions. But I also realize the government favors them over small business. I don't see the government bailing out Starbucks, Wal-Mart.
themou2008 2 years ago
Did you look into the Glass-Steagle Act if so what do you think?
FluxCapacitor2008 2 years ago
The reason why they are in trouble is because they are not selling, the reason they are not selling is because the consumer has no money to buy these cars. If you wanna help the auto industry then help the consumers and don't just blindly throw money at the CEO's of these companies.
August1977 3 years ago
The American auto industry can help itself by shortening union contracts or not have union at all. This the main issue.
An average union worker get $150,000/ year. But this isn't take home pay. Most of it goes to state of the art health benefits and paid time off. Even if they're laid off. To my knowledge, none of the foreign car companies have unions.
I the past few months Nissan and Toyota have laid of 1,000's of workers. Obama doesn't mention it because they're not union.
themou2008 2 years ago
I know somone that's works fo Chrysler as a skilled trades person and his pay for 2008 was just under 70K. I dont know ware you got that 150K figure. Why are people trying to bring down wages when they should be trying to bring their wages up.
FluxCapacitor2008 2 years ago
I said the average worker gets 150,000 per year. But this isn't take home pay. Maybe ask your friend what kind of health benefits he/she gets and if he/ she gets paid time off. I'm not just making this crap up. I get alot of my info form the Wall Street Journal. A very recognized business paper throughout the world.

Allowing the auto companies to collapse is not a responsible course of action," President George W. Bush said. He said that a bankruptcy was unlikely to work for the auto industry at this time and would deal "an unacceptably painful blow to hardworking Americans" across the economy.
FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
Bush only said this to look good for the unions. What about the hardworking americans who now have to pay for the bail-out? What about the hardworking americans who had their own business and now have to file for bankruptcy?
themou2008 2 years ago
Its not the working people of America thats the problem, unions are working people. Unions are not some evil entity that we should destroy they are families. The real bandits of the bail outs are the ultra rich political power base controlled by the financial industry.
Please do some research on the Glass-Steagle Act that was put into law after the financial collapse of the 1930 this law was in place for over 40 years.
FluxCapacitor2008 2 years ago

We dont have lobbyists like the big business and Wall Street guys buying politicians.

FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
Do you really expect people to buy the Bullshit your selling? GM, FORD,and Chrysler are all terrible old dinosours that don't innovate their cars. THey are still gas guzzlers! And the fusion and mercury hybrid you so praise is almost impossible to find. Not to mention the price tag on them is rediculous!! Besides, the car makers should be allowed to fail. They stopped listening to the customer and ended up losing business because of it. Now they want our tax dollars to fix it. HOW IS THAT FAIR?

We need to preserve and create jobs, not try to bust unions just because they vote for one party or the other. You can keep buying your foreign cars but 50% of the market will keep buying US cars with the profits staying in the US and not Japan.
FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
If that were true, that 50% will keep buying U.S. cars, then why do they need a bailout plan? Where are all their profits going, huh? WE NEED to hold companies responsible for failing. Otherwise, lets just give ever single company a bail out when it starts to go under! Hey, Kmart is losing ground, what about them. Why not Ace hardware? I could go on and on. Maybe American companies should look at what foriegn co. are doing and try to be more like them since they are having better success!
Rserlo 3 years ago
They need aLoanbecause the wall serest braintrust screwed up the credit system, and sucked up billions with ponzi schemes. Also Toyota sales are down 48% and it is only a mater of time before they need loans from there government and the people of Japan will get behind there workers, what we need to do is support one of our few manufacturing bases that is left.Kmart and Ace do not support 3 million jobss and are not linked to national security!Hay,we can have communist china build us some tanks
FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
THe auto makers get their money from car sales regardless if people pay their loans or not! If you were smart, you would know that. The only people affected by credit is the banks and the people they lend to. And you can make fun of China all you want, but right now, they are kicking the crap out of our economy and manufacturing more products than us. Obviously they are doing something right. Besides, half the crap you buy that says U.S.A. on it is still made elsewhere. Ask the automakers.
Rserlo 3 years ago
Hello people we have 3 million people unemployed and losing there houses the last thing on there mind is buying a Toyota or any other car, we have been losing jobs and work to places like China that pay slave labor wages and we keep on racing to the bottom, The government has gave U.S. company tax brakes to move US jobs overseas for years and like Ross Perot said in the 90s that sucking sound of jobs going over seas is hitting us now.
FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
If just one of America's car companies is allowed to fold, an estimated 2.5 million jobs will be lost resulting in a domino effect that could make the current state of the economy look like the "good old days."

Almost 4 percent of U.S. gross domestic product is auto-related and represents 10 percent of U.S. industrial production by value.

3) "World" depressions/recessions (which we are obviously in right now) come & go as they ALWAYS have and ALWAYS will.
4) I agree that a bail out is stupid! But obviously not for the reasons that you point out. The market NEEDS to correct itself, a bailout only prolongs the inevitable and is a futile attempt to spread the recession out over time .. to avoid a depression .. but I don't believe that the taxpayer should be theoretically forced to by the Big 3 products in a free country = Bailout
joeydemille 3 years ago

FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago

FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
At the end of 2006, the U.S. current account deficit was an unprecedented $856.7 billion, an 8% increase from 2005's record of $791.5 billion. This is 6.6% of the $13 trillion U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a level that would be of concern to most countries. (Source: Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. International Transactions in 2006, April 2007
FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
A concern about the U.S. trade deficit is the statement it makes about the competitiveness of the U.S. economy itself. By purchasing goods overseas for a long enough period of time, U.S. companies no longer have the expertise or even the factories to make those products. Try finding a pair of shoes made in the U.S. As the U.S. loses competitiveness, it has even lower quality jobs and the standard of living declines
FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
Of course, this can only go on as long as there are no other customers for the pizza, and the pizza place can afford to loan you the money. One day the lending countries may decide to ask the U.S. to repay the debt. On that day, the party is over!!!!!!!
FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
An ongoing trade deficit could be detrimental to the nations economy over the long term because it is financed with debt. In other words, the U.S. can buy more than it makes because the countries that it buys from are lending it the money. It is like a party where youve run out of money, but the pizza place is willing to keep sending you pizzas and put it on your tab.

Actually, we will not all be out of jobs if the big 3 go under. we will necessarily lose about 100K jobs, that could rebound quickly because the big 3 would simply restructure, LEAVE MICHIGAN and go to a state that actually supports profitable industry (no unions ... like Tennessee ... where the profitable companies build cars and pay nearly half the wages to their workers) What we would get is a more efficient American auto industry that would actually have a chance to compete!
joeydemille 3 years ago
Not true, the auto industry has one of the largest economic multipliers of any sector of the U.S. economy, GM Ford and Chrysler employ 239,000 Americans and 775,000 retirees and surviving spouses rely on the auto makers for pensions and benefits. Think the collapse of the US autos will just affect Detroit and the mid west? Think again what about the suppliers that supplier not only the US autos but the foreign makers also.

FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
I read an article that implied the only thing America manufactures is debt. We lost our manufacturing capacity when we opened up our borders and encouraged corporations to employ cheap labor overseas.
Lobbyists have convinced congress that it's in the individuals best interest to take care of corporations, in what amounts to trickle down economics, but if congress really cared about the American people, they would consider "trickle up" economics.

FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
It's only health care for the dieing don't frek out
FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
That's only the beginning. How many liberties can we afford to lose in this country?

Is there anyone on here seriously considering moving out of the country before the maneur hits the fan?
...when the dollar crashes like Peter Schiff says.
If so, then where are you thinking about moving to and what do plan to do (for income) when you get there?

There is a reason they are beating down the unions, to make 2 class country rich and poor
FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
There is over 13.7 million Americans aged 19 to 29 without health insurance
FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
That's ok Barack will fix it all. He'll bring socialized health care to this country and little by little we'll sink into the depths of Socialism. Welcome to the end of what made this country great to begin with.

The government is always pissing away our money, it's better to invest in the working class thin piss it away on Wall Street and war
FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
Working class ha! The only ones that will benefit from the bailout are the spoiled union workers and the high paid executives. If they get a dime of my money I'll drive a Honda.
dex1391 3 years ago
It's a combination of union greed and CEO stupidity that got the automakers where they are today. But, that's fine it's their business. They're free to run it any way they want. But, don't ask me to bail you out when you fail. The American automakers will fail but someone else will take their place. It's called natural selection. Only the strong SHOULD survive.
dex1391 3 years ago
Dont shoot yourself in the foot, their jobs now your job next. Non union works are underpaid and overworked. We need to come toghther and build the middle class up not knock your neighbor down.
FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago

FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
The bailout is stupid. It's the government mandated hybrid cars that NOone wants to buy that is killing the big three. If they get this money I'll be driving a Honda.

NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) was proposed to create 170,000 new jobs every year, but 750,000 jobs have been lost" because of it,

The United States must fix its trade problems, particularly unfair trade with China, which has cost the nation more than 3.5 million manufacturing jobs this decade including more than 200,000 factory jobs in Pennsylvania

UNION BUSTERS!
marniespeaks 3 years ago
If we had more people in unions more people would make a living wage and have health insurance, big business has every one divide and brainwashed how can anyone live on less then $18 dollars an hour and pay for have health insurance and a lot of people do, I was like a lot of people and thought the unions workers are overpaid and underworked, but the truth be told non union works are underpaid and overworked. We need to come toghther and build the middle class up not knock your neighbor down.

PAYNE227 3 years ago
This is what don't understand. What is this money to be used for? How about lowering these damned service charges! The service dept. charges you anywhere from $100-$150 to inspect your car to tell you what's wrong. The parts you need cost under $100 and labor is over $100 per hour. Then you wonder why the average person goes to the corner mechanic where labor is only $70 an hour. They're piggy backing off the economic bailout. Can someone tell ME what the auto bailout's purpose is!!

So, WHY did they not bail out the airlines???????

Hold your wallets and hide your purses. I think the new amount they need might be $128 Billion. But hey, when you build cars this good who cares?
Deoradhan7919 3 years ago
They say they've been hurting for a few years now. Wonder how much money the execs. have been taking home during that time. Greed is the problem.
Capitalist solution---------
Give wouchers to tax payers for 20 thousand dollars that can only be used to buy cars from troubled car makers. This helps the car dealers, the economy and most of all the tax payers. Easy! If they can't survive after that, screw 'em!
Inacubula 3 years ago
The auto idustry is failing because of the inflated labor cost and corporate tax hikes. I say let them go bankrupt and renegotiate their union contracts or even better yet get rid of the union all together. UNIONS SUCK

So how much will they ask for in 3 months when they blow thru these billions??
brenkeller 3 years ago 2
GM burns 1 billion a month, 33 million a day, 1 million per hour, 20,000 per minute (around the loss they take for every 10 cars they sold), 95% of which is for labor cost.
should last time a year, ample time for them to find the graveyard.
