Pretty good! I find electronics easier to play and sound great like an awesome drummer-if these were acoustic, would the jam be the same???Great job on the electrics!
This sounds like the Maple kit on the SD9k Simmons kit. These pads are multi zone while the SD9K's pads are for the most part duel zone. The "OPen Kit's" and Standard kit are both recorded sounds of a combination DW and Pearl Maple/ Rose kit. The snare is a slingerland sound. I think Simmons sounds best, then Yamaha, and finally Roland. Roland is much easier to play because of the responsiveness of the mesh pads. Happy Playing. It took my 6 year old a year to get accomplished
@railfreek the Simmons SD9K kit has nothing to do with the 80s Simmons drums... Guitar Center stole the name and now does cheapo kits with the original Simmons name
wow drumclanc. Do you have several SDSV brains going at once for this solo? How about a rundown of your arrangement here? (Or, has that already been written?)
It also looks as if you've replaced most of the hex pads with newer ones. Is this so?
It appears he has all 5 pads from the SDSV (hex) and the round pads are from his Roland. This was before "cymbal pads" like Roland V-Cymbals. This was before mesh heads even!
I made this little video a long time ago so it's hard to remember but I'm pretty sure I just had the one SDSV at the time. All the Simmons pads were the original pads with XLR sockets and riot shield!
Great e-drum solo there! I'm not a drummer myself in particular but also play some drums/e-drums/e-percussion on my own works in the recording studio, and I still have my old Simmons SDS7. Cheers!
Yes cross triggering at times and the 7 can get really hot, some drummers have fitted fans inside the brain case. Both are really good, the 7 is much more versatile but you just can't beat the simplicity and brilliance the SDSV.
Hi, no I don't have the SDSV anymore but I do have an SDS7 and I still have the roland brain and pads. Yes I plan to do an electronic and acoustic video at some point.
Yeah both the TD7 and the SDSV are cool drum modules. Some really great albums have been recorded with the use of the Simmons SDSV. I really wish I still had that module.
The hexagon ones are the Simmons ones. They came out in 1981, with Spandau Ballet one of the first ever to record with it. However the first ever e-drums? Depends: Kraftwerk created their own home-made kits in the 70s... there was the Synare... there was another one prior to Simmons... Simmons was the first electronic kit with sounds serious enough to make an impact.
I like electronic drums, it's really fun but I will always prefer real acoustic drums.
The sound is perfect with electronic drums, no doubt about it. However, only one thing turn me off: anybody can get the same sound, you know what I mean. If two drummers bought the same acoustic drums, they will not necessary get the same sound because drumhead can be different or badly tuned, cymbals and the room where the drums stand will sound different, etc.
You know, a lot of people make jokes about the cheesy electric drum sounds from the 1980's but I still think that the Simmons drum brain had some pretty cool sounds and your playing demonstrates this. I'm glad you're not interested in the cheesy stuff! Great job. I'm such a fan of electronic drums. Where did you get these? I'm a Roland drums girl, myself but would love to get my hands on a few Simmons pads from the 80's.
Hi there, apologies for the late reply! Thanks for your comments. I suggest looking out for the old Simmons modules on Ebay. I don't have the SDSV anymore, really wish I kept it! I do though have a couple of SDS7 modules and am planning at some stage to make another fun video with them. The SDS7 modules I have, used to belong to the great Eric Carr, so I really must do something cool with them. Cheers Joe
Hi, thanks for the question. I was wondering when someone was gonna ask me that! They are rubber floor tiles! I put them on the pads so they were not acoustically as loud and slightly more comfortable to play! Riot shield Simmons pads were very noisy and quite uncomfortable on your wrists. Hope that answers your question.
Thank you for your kind comments. I miss the SDSV, although I now have two SDS7 units once owned by the brilliant Eric Carr. Hopefully will get round to recording a new video at some point.
Hi, thanks for the comments. Don't get time to play much these days, but have posted another video of me messing around on m,y new Mapex kit, nothing serious just trying it out for the first time. Don't the hexagonal pads look much cooler than the pads of today, I still love the old Simmons stuff!
There was a time during the eighties that you heard and saw these drums everywhere, that Spandau ballet drummer even had a double bass set up. But most drummers from that era opted to use an acoustic snare in favor of the snare drum patch.
Yeah I agree it was very common for drummers just to use the toms and kick, there were only a few drummers such as Bill Bruford who really used the full potential of the SDSV, SDS7, SDS9 and of course his amazing work with the SDX. The use of white noise on the SDSV was used to great effect by Mutt Lange and Peter Collins etc.
Don't forget what Phil Collins did on his Simmons drums which can be heard all over on Genesis' "Invisible touch" album, most notably on "Domino", "The Brazillian" and the title track.
Yeah, Collins did some great stuff on 'Home by the sea' and the tracks you mentioned from the 'Invisible touch' album. I also really like what Neil Peart and Alex Van Halen did with the Simmons SDSV. Didn't manage to catch Collins on the last tour, was wondering if he still pulls out the old Simmons stuff or if he's now using the V drum stuff?
Well I saw Genesis last year and Phil and Chester were using the V-drums along with their DW (Chester) and Gretsch kits. I guess that dependability is the word here. There's no telling if the old module of the Simmons sets they had in the eighties still works.
Hi, thanks very much for your comments. There is a combination of snare sounds in the recording, essentially I am using both the SDSV and the Roland TD7. Wish I had kept hold of the SDSV!
how much would one of these brains be worth now. I mean the vintage kind.

Dude, solid man. but i believe electronic drums should only be used for toms. nothing can beat a well tuned snare and bass, or real cymbals.

It's not the pads, it's the sounds, and the EQ you give them. Otherwise, you don't need these pads for the sounds.

Did you ever have to deal with the legendary reliability issues associated with the 7?
I can't decide if I want (out of the classic gear, anyway) an SDS 7 or a 5. As a 7 owner, which do you recommend?

Hi, Think you are probably talking about the sound of the SDSV? Combination of white noise, decay and attack. It's a great synth!
drumclanc 3 years ago
the bass drum is nice
sonormichael 3 years ago
Thanks Michael, yeah the SDSV has a great kick sound. Alex Van Halen put it to very good use in the 80's. The TD7 also has some decent kick sounds.
drumclanc 3 years ago
I like how it mixes a realistic snare sound with those low-pitched descending synth sounds.
