  • Before the 'terrain pull up' warning

  • I think we should focus on the true victims of this story, frog hunting is inhumane and frogs deserve civil rights jus as much as we do, not to be hunted.

  • "No one light a match"----- Pretty sure nobody is going to be lighting a smoke out there

  • OK. There is a 20 cent light bulb that is out. The gear IS down. SO WHAT? They crashed because those stupid ATC and pilots didn't pay attention to the altitude!

  • 1 58 hey hey whats happening her oh let see death maybe.

  • hunting frogs lol mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm must tast mmm good.

  • At 3:36 it sounds like the sfx when an army man gets shot from the old ps1 games

  • @CrazyCessnaPilot Yeah, I heard that too. Gotta love those stock sound effects :D

  • The air traffic controler SHOULD have told them they were at 900 feet. He failed to do so. >.<

  • @miriley6

The pilots should have been aware of the plane and not the light bulb. In my perspective, the pilots are at fault. ATC has to monitor multiple planes. The pilots were too busy fucking around in the cock pit when they could have easily asked their flight attendent if they heard the gear go down.

  • first rule in an abnormal situation....always fly the plane! it's easy to get distracted but thats pretty much what every pilot is taught.

  • Because of this crash, the Auto Pilot has an alarm when it is disengaged. It always takes a crash.

  • @tdrewman it did have one, expect nobody heard it

  • Oh he did, have to watch to the end lol.

  • just realized the captain survived. So much for karma rofl

  • What a cocky captain, djees. He deserved to crash. Due to his bad personality, and his lacking skill. Its just sad he took so many other people with him.

  • Bob, you are a champion.

  • You would think that maybe if they did a fly by they could have someone from the control tower to tell them if it's down. Why does everything have to be so freakin' complicated...

  • @tranquillofdarkness a visual fly over can confirm the gear is down....but it can't confirm that the gear is LOCKED

  • The captain was a noob.

  • atc"you are 300 ft below flt level, remain at flt 2000" did not happen-SOP; dropping below set aoutpilot flt level or auto P switched off, would've given audible and visual alarms; atc would've given airport alltitude, ILS w/ IFR (instrument flight rules) night or bad weather; audible/visual alarms would also have sounded if aircraft detered from set parimeters. others who fly will think it amazing the faults that had taken place in such a short time . glad to see others commenting..... guy c.

  • stupid people cancel landing and cruise at 20,000 and THEN fix the landing gear thingy

  • @alijameel98 2,000*

  • total failure on the crew and atc! Just one of them looking at what was going on and communicating it........................this never would've taken place.

  • Instead of saying "How are things coming along?" ATC Johnson should have said what he was thinkng; "401 you are at 900 feet"

  • What a fail... incredible.

  • I disagree with the issue of swearing ... under stress and unexpected emergency people can use language they normally wouldn't. It's people who use language like that in everyday conversation who ought to shut up.

What I can't believe is that there were 4 guys in the cockpit and NOBODY noticed the plane's altitude was dropping???

  • lets hope from every crash we learn something, little things like the controller asking what their altitude is, etc....

  • @77danigga Yeah!! Okay, so you can get false readings for several sweeps ... but still, why was it not SOP to double-check with the plane??

  • this guy is hunting frogs??

  • The number one rule of flying....fly the plane!!

  • the pilot had 30yrs experience...... wow thats crazy

  • When the Controller saw them at 900 ft he said ''hows it going up there'' insted of, please confirm your at 2000 ft.

    Idiot!!

  • Bob marcus rocks!

  • What About The Ground Proximity Warning ????

  • Pilots are retarded should be the title

  • retarded pilots bob you suck

  • retarded pilots

  • hunting frogs :S strange hobbie :P

  • This show is ok but NOWHERE near as good as Channel 4's (UK) 'Black Box'. I think they only made 6 episodes but they were brilliantly made.

  • HUNTING FROGS?!

  • @azeem150 fuck yeah i can tell your not from the south XD

  • @Kamikuru77 LOL...Correct...and now, not planning to move in a hurry!

  • no one light a match?? lol like anyone would do that

  • @mikerizz33 YOU would be surprised

  • The tower I flew out of will warn me if my transponder is giving out wrong altitude......

  • Innocent people and children died to the mercy of a 3cm lightbulb?

  • hmmm. maybe it was pilot error. 4 retards in the cockpit.

  • Agout the man in the swamp. Why do you hunt frogs...please do not say for food. =)

  • @AtsoftcoT Beyond any doubt they failed to fly the aircraft, basic error, end of the story.

  • @AtsoftcoT Thank God for Bob Marcus!

  • how come when a plane does a flash over peoples hair does not catch fire.weird right

  • the frog hunter is like, my frogs! ;_;

  • stupid ass pilots!

  • Perhaps if the air trafffic controller had done less of the soft, easy to hear questions the sort of miss the point ones like 'how are things going up there' which are intended to probe the situation but not really fix it. And done a more direct statement like 'EAL 401 you have dropped to 900feet! pull up!!'. Lives might not have been lost.

  • 3:10

  • Yes a 20 cent piece of lighting equipment caused them their lives and killed almost all their passengers. 20 cent piece of light equipment =their deaths and half their passengers death.

  • It was a very advanced plane :P

    And pilot was a Pothead

  • alligators could get them as well

  • @MissWooHoo1 Not likely. They're covered in jet fuel - what wants to eat that? Plus, it seems like it would be obvious that they're too big to eat. I don't think that was a big danger.

  • Stupid pilots and the captain is an old prick. Feel sorry for innocent passengers who died.

  • for a dam light, absurd

if you over focus on a secondary problem you may loose the point

  • man, they really made this captain out to be a complete idiot...RIP

  • I have watched so many of these and they all are sad but helps you to become more aware.. This one breaks my heart because all of these people lost their life over a light bulb. I'm so glad that guy was there to help save so many people. Truly sad !!

  • Why would anyone HAVE or light a match?

  • Just let the mechanics fix the lightbulb... The broken light aint gonna tell the position of the gear anyway.

  • that pilot is such a shit driver! if he's old then retire no 1 busts him to fly the plane unless he wants to go to hell

  • hmm, the vid's glitched for me.

    1:00

Ignore this, it's for my own use.

  • most stupid pilot in history...fiddling with a lamp and smash it into an alligator swamp.

  • OH MY GOODNESS!!! I have seen a butt chin before, but i have never seen a butt neck. not to be offencive, that man was a hero.

  • that pilot really has to watch his language

  • @maxwellus000123 I think the ability to refrain from swearing in demanding situations determines whether you are a professional or not.

  • @ghostintheshelll Oh...so that's what you think,huh!!And...

  • @ghostintheshelll haha so true. but those pilots were to destracted on that dumb light

  • @ghostintheshelll I think the ability of keeping your cool (swearing or not) and landing a plane effectively, or completing a mission successfully determines whether you are a professional or not. It has nothing to do with your choice of words....

  • @maxwellus000123 nonsense. You have never been in any hard situations like this, so fuck off.

  • @maxwellus000123 Yep but i feel sorry for him .

  • @maxwellus000123 well I guess in a situation like that you would swear

  • @maxwellus000123 well if is was him ind to that too

  • @maxwellus000123

The pilot also must really watch his ALTITUDE.

  • Aviate, Navigate, Comunicate, then attempt to fix bloody broken light blulbs lol!

  • omg thanks for posting this i dont have cable so this is good

  • forgot to fly the airplane

  • who the fuck goes hunting for frogs???? jeeeeese

  • the controller shouldn't say turn left. He should say north, west, east south with an angle.

  • Planes thing ?

  • was wondering, why there was no terrain alarm on the plane when it was getting too low?? was the plane thinking that it was landing??

  • @hAhan17 Actually, there was a warning sound, but the crew were so busy dealing with the landing gear issue, they just missed it. Investigators clearly heard it on CVR tape.

  • @ghostintheshelll oh ya, my fault, i realized after watching the next part, the chime was on another work station, the engineer went to check the landing gear and miss it, the other two pilots were confused by the lights and missed it too...

  • The warning sound was to indicate that the aircraft was far below the altitude set for the autopilot even though it was still under autopilot control, due probably to the captain inadvertently pushing the control column down. The warning was an inconspicuous chime noise from the engineer's station. There was no terrain alarm because this aircraft didnt have one.

  • @fightingtemeraire I fully agree with you, the warning sound was a flawed design, it should have been a loud, disturbing sound, clearly audible to the crew.

  • @ghostintheshelll I was thinkin the exact same thing!!

  • @hAhan17 you're right, there's a video of another plane in which pretty much every instrument failed, except for the "too low, terrain" alarm. and it's a voice that repeats that message over and over, so they couldn't have missed that. Why didn't that work? i think you're right, they plane thought it was landing because it had the gears down

  • @hAhan17 you mean the ground proximity warning?

  • @hAhan17 the pilots did hear the last warning but it was to late for them to do anything.

  • i thort thers a alarm if there to low or losing altitude

  • what the hell how did the alarm not tell them to pull up.

  • pariently the Boeing aircraft has that feature but this plane is a lockead, they might have accidently kill the autopilot, the autopilot suppose to hold the plane in the air, and if you want to turn you turn the heading knobs, if you want to climb or decent you turn the altimiter hold, they might have killed the autopilot. I don't know.

  • ye I thought there was an alarm, but the did pull up...I think

  • GPWS was not in use at this point. If it had been it would have shouted at them until they pulled up.

  • Gear down suppresses the alarm since it is assumed that the aircraft is going to land soon.

  • 4 trained and experienced staff in the cockpit and a small bulb caused this to happen. Nowadays a young two man crew would be able to deal with this no problems at all....

  • Comment removed

  • sooo sad, if that controller had only said "state your altitude" instead of "how are things coming along," those lives would have been saved.

  • thats what i thort

  • @iiiset yup..... but i think this disaster happened from god so that everyone NOW can learn from it and experience how to really fly a plane... and there is no such thing as death cause their is an afterlife. the people that went from earth to heaven or afterlife are having a good time with god. earth is just a project that god made for us to live and come back to our homes which is heaven where god is.

  • hunting frost ......

  • frogs

  • lol they cared so much about that light bulb that they didnt noe that the plane is gonna crash :P

  • when is this where is this what kind of plane is this?

  • listen to part 1 and it says what type of a/c it is(L1011), that its going from new york to miami(??) and its just after xmas in 1979

  • DAMN IT!

  • cogidubnus1953, you hit it right on the button.

  • and why the fuck didn't the dispather say: Eastern 401, what is your flight level? i am reading 900 ft ,eastern 401 confirm flight level 900. because he saw that their altitude was dropping but he didnt say anything..

  • wow they suck... if you see 80 ft on your altimeter then pull the fuck up!!! ASAP it took then 2 seconds to finally pull on the stick that would have been enough to pull up... don't they have a ground proximity warning system?? wtf what a noob forgot to put the landing lights on

  • @leviathan94xxx GPWS wasn't invented then. this accident was part of the reason it was. still though, a 30 year veteran, flying like a noob. almost merciful he died, really.

  • The L1011 which was very advanced at the time, but a part as simple as a light can bring down tons of machinery, due to human nature.

  • The title of this should be, "How many pilots does it take to change a light bulb?" Fucking absurd!

  • @mseals29 there wasn't enough!

  • What this disaster shows is a sad observation on human nature...that such an obsession over a small thing (the bulb) can so easily over-ride every safety imperative...

  • Space Vulcan - the gear was down so I don't think it works otherwise it would go off on every landing.

  • Whay about the Ground Proximity Warning? I mean, the 1011 was pretty tecnologically advanced for the time, why didn't it engage?

  • @SpaceVulcan It did, its a c chord chime, but its not very loud and the speaker is at the flight engineers panel and Repo was down in the hell hole

  • @SpaceVulcan Because virtually every airliners including Eastern 401 are not equip with GPWS. Although GRPWS was already develeoped at the time of the crash, but they are not manditory until 1974.

  • @SpaceVulcan It did engage it was the chime.

  • 1 of the pilots should look at the altiude but they didnt and look what happend all the pilots died

  • C'mon, 3 guys in the cockpit and NONE of them were checking their altitude indicators? There are at least 3 on the panel! Ridiculous!

  • Hunting frogs? what hes gonna do with it? eat them:p?

  • frog legs are a delicacy i guess. ugh.

  • bravo 4 the frog hunter...

  • 180 is south not west, west would be 270, they were turning left on the clip, so thats tells me they were going west then turning south.

  • It is a goodvideo. But i dont want it stopping in the middle

  • Hunting frogs , LOL HAHAHA.

  • Why were there 20,000 kg of fuel onboard right before landing? Were they making a stopover on their way to somewhere else? This is a nonstandard amount of extra fuel, no?

  • i wanted to see this for ever

  • U r welcome :)

  • Thanks dude love this series!!
