Overacting and stereotyping is interesting if the actors give their actions a new spin such as in El Mariachi. In The Artist the actors are just poor imitations of the originals. Badly made film with hardly any originality.
At first, I was reluctant to watch the movie because I imagined silent movies would be quite difficult to understand. But after I found out that this movie won 5 Academy Awards (out of 10 nominations), I decided to watch it, and it was awesome! One of the most memorable movies I've ever seen.
I haven't seen the movie, but I've been told that it is spectacular! It's genius to make a silent film in this era, just because it's different, and with all the sound effects in the movies we're used to watching, it just becomes groundbreaking, and to be that daring in this time is something that should be praised! That's the beauty of this film, we don't need sound to make us understand its purpose, because sometimes sound effects can become really distracting! Definately watching it :)

From a business stand-point, sound was probably the most retarded piece of technology the film industry integrated into their movies. It also ruined many careers because an actor's voice wasn't as attractive. Movies like this prove that stories can be told without sound. It's well-deserving of the title. =)

But this film forces the viewer to pay attention to details--to the actor's expressions, mannerisms, to set design, to shadows, to reflections, until those details rise up to form an allegory, a storyline with metaphors alighting the way. In a world of I phones, pads and pods, it's nice to take a pause and let your mind just go quietly along. I dare say if you give it a chance, you will not be sorry.

Just because a movie is different doesn't make it good or bad; entertainment comes in all shames and forms. Silent, B&W movies may be difficult for some to watch because they aren't used to it, but these types of films are more interactive; you add the color and the sounds with your imagination to make it real, and the quality of the movie relies predominately on good acting.

I absolutely LOVED this movie. After I got over the initial shock that it was a silent film, and in black and white, the incredible acting by the two leads - Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo and the fascinating plot pulled me right in. The musical score was beautiful, the story exciting, funny and so deeply moving. You really care about the characters. And the dog - honestly was adorable. I was amazed at his comedic timing! This is a film I will buy, and cherish. It is a classic!
Had a blast watching this movie. It's not "The Godfather" or "Casablanca," but it's a worthy winner in an off year. Looking forward to seeing it again soon.

the only category that this SHIT film should have won is best SHITTEST film ever made or best Writing (Adapted Screenplay). Seriously, what happend to films that are more in touch with normal moviergoers like last years nom, I didn't like the King Speech that much but at least it was an OK watchable movie, for this year most films that were nominated suck with the exception of about 3-4 films. If you want to watch a silent film, just watch Charlie Champlin, he is better than that French twat

George Valentin's attitude towards talkies is a nod towards Chaplin's attitude towards them. Silent films were easier to distribute to the rest of the world, easier to change the intertitles...but if done right, an audience could understand the story by pantomime even without the intertitles.

If you pay attention to the details, they rise up and form a crescendo of brilliance. I absolutely LOVED this movie. After I got over the initial shock that it was a silent film, and in black and white, the incredible acting by the two leads - Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo and the fascinating plot pulled me right in. The musical score was beautiful, the story exciting, funny and so deeply moving. You really care about the characters. And the dog - honestly was adorable. I was amazed at his comedic timing! This is a film I will buy, and cherish. It is a classic!
