I used to play this over and over again on my VHS tape. In '99 I was in Air Force Basic Training with one of the guys in the snare line. There was also a guy who was a former Cavalier there too!
@doublebassheeltoe Scouts were amazing in 1992. But Crossmen just had a level of hype and energy that was unparalleled. Also, don't judge the cleanliness by this video; it's way distorted. They were clean.
DrmrGuy1979...I was on the guard staff that year. Suzanne came all the way from the Netherlands to march her age out with us and was with us the entire season. @spreadheaddon bless her heart, I bet that was incredible inspiration and motivation for the corps and staff members. Great year as well, I was in midwestern region (back when there was a DCE, DCM, etc) so we didnt catch you guys until mid July... great show... Crossman 1990 through 1993 were incredible years for the organization and regardless of scores, definitely each of the those years was one of the most memorable shows of the entire season. Thurston... that dude wrote groove baby!
Cool solo. I remember watching you guy track when we were staying at the same schools. I think we borrowed your grippy stuff on the snare sticks idea. Worked great for sweaty hands!
@Direwolf56 Thurston's writing was always tasty and groovy... I dont care what the difficulty level is either, I agree with you, his beats were always cool.
RIP: Darrell J. Goslin - DCI age out 1992 from Crossmen. amazing inspiration. i'll never forget his humor in 93 when he came to help out at Bucs and played a really big joke on me. you will always be loved by many. besides an amazing family man and educator, he was the best center snare for the best east coast drumline in history.
Drum corps is kinda missing this kind of flare. I've only been following it about 2 years and up until late 90s early 2000s the shows just don't seem as passionate and full of energy. Visually I like today's a lot more, but musically they just don't do it for me as much as these earlier shows do.
Ever notice how all the new stuff DOESN'T pump you like the 90s shows did? Something is missing from DCI but I don't know what. I know all the kids are stronger players and have better equipment but it's just all boring to me now. This closer was one of my favorites in all of drum corps history.
@brianggilbert You in KKY/ Eta Rho, Bri? I'm a WCU Almuni from before this time, 8D I had many Crossmen friends at WCU while I was with Westshore BITD. 8D
@Cymbalbob80 There was nothing underrated about them. Everyone in '92 knew how good they were! This was the first open class drumcorps I ever saw. It was early July in Cohocton NY. The show was rained out the night before and the Crossmen stuck around till the night after. We were treated to two consecutive run-throughs with Paul Cain explaining the different parts of the show in between songs. To this day it remains my favorite show. Its definitely why I marched with them.
OMG! I remember this performance live. This is the most fantastic piece of drumming, and corp performance in 1:48 ever. I miss the "Philly" Crossmen. You were a fantastic corp. What happened in 1993 after this smash performance is beyond me.
And lets not forget the resolution with the horns at the end of the feature was sick! THAT was also a REALLY good hornline as well. I believe it was visual performance that let them down but the musical book had such a high degree of difficulty that could be forgiven!
the stereo mix doesn't do justice to how good this line sounded that year. if you get a chance to check the audio copy, dump the sound into one speaker and witness the amazing work of mark and the 92 crossmen
This sound recording is weird, it made the battery licks sound totally dirty when I know they werent on the VHS copy. So those arguing saying it was crappy have not seen the original. For 1992 that battery and pit ensemble threw down some serious notes and cleaner than most top 12 corps could do. Which is why the battery scored above most of them! =)
The phasing issue in the recordings used to drive me crazy!!! You had to turn one speaker off to hear the line actually sound clean. And on top of that, since they were constantly moving between the microphones you had to keep switching which speaker to pan or turn completely off. You had to always say I was there man and it was clean live. I think that they finally figured out that the mic placement was the culprit.
Even this years DVD was like that a little in some sections where horns were backfield and the battery was up front. One ear does the trick though haha.
I saw my first DCI show in 1991 when I was a high school freshman. In 1992, I went to the Vanderbilt University show and saw this line warming up in the parking lot and then on the field in competition. I'll never forget it--this was my first "favorite line". The dudes were totally into it--throwin' down notes and enjoying every second of it. Thanks for the incredible performances that year, 92 Crossmen!!!

Anytime man. The other thing that I really dug about the Crossmen lines from the early 90s is the fact that you guys were totally into what you were playing. Heads were moving, necks were jerkin'. That's something that I always tried to get out of my lines when I was teaching. Don't just play it. FEEL IT!

@illBUrFriend ya gotta keep your eyes on the Drumline to the very end. The drum solo's not over (for these guys) until the very end of the tune! Even when they 'bring the hornline back in' they are still ramming mad notes! And then the tempo and direction changes!... yeah, legendary year for X! now I'm gonna go watch 1990! another great Crossmen year for drums!

Nope. There is no lesser punishment than a total revocation of 1st amendment rights for disparaging the 1992 Crossmen. I don't make the rules, but rules they are.
I love tequila, youtube, and drum corps in the early 1990's. DCI def seemed to reach a peak balance then between drill, notes, volume, and thrash before the long slow BOA spiral landing in Hopkins electric instruments crater - coming to a 2009 football field near you.
Geesh, I'm SO glad people are spending time trying to find swastikas in drill formations. Brilliant. I saw a swastika in my bowl of oatmeal this morning, just saying..:)..
this is when x-men drumming rocked....hard hitting drum set based rudimental playing....if only the 97 change hadn't happened....for those of you that remember...it was hard to accept...it still haunts me...

Long live the 1992 Crossmen...we made history that year and an apparent lasting impression on many drum corps fans by making the 2006 classic countdown. I would love to go back in time and relive that summer.
Yo! Yes, marching this show was an incredible experience. I've never had (and probably never will) have another opportunity to perform with a drum line of that caliber!
After years and years of playing, teaching, designing, and performing this still ranks WAY the hell up there in terms of BEST MUSICAL MOMENT of my life.
@brianggilbert I marched Star. The Closer music (horns+drums) coming out of the drum solo is awesome! What is the name? Who does the original version?
I want this played at my funeral.
Okay, not really.
But at least at the after-party.

It's a shame 93 had to suck so bad :-)

@brianggilbert I marched Star. The Closer music (horns+drums) coming out of the drum solo is awesome! What is the name? Who does the original version?
