  • To browneyedgirl39 Please get a pair of glasses. To learn the histroy of Jerk . You must learn the History of each seasoning especially the Pimento or Pirate Language All Spice. Which is grown naturally in Jamaica long, long time before the EAST INDIAN & WEST INDIANS.

  • TO: karismatikkween08 You just ate Jerk from the wrong Jerk Man. Not everyone who Jerk can Jerk. You have to go to the Modern Pirates they call Scotches or to Boston Bay Protland to really taste Authentic Jerk. So quit jerkinng off and come to jamaica Mon!

  • TO ; startec25 Every culture useto cook pork over coal before electricity. Even the Cave men could do it.... but is was not jerk.....I have never known anyone saying that the best jerk they tasted came from Africa. or a African Jerk festival. Give proof of your statment.!!!!!

    When the Spaniards came to the New World(Caribbean) they saw Natives cooking on wood/ sticks called "Barbacoa" later called "Barbeque"They cured meat in smoked pits seasoned with "pinienta" called "boucan" meaning cured meat They taught the Europeans who sold it to ships and later go their name :"Buccaneers" meaning Meat curers.This was later taught to the Maroons in Boston who preserved the method and added their own seasonings that created Modern JERK!

I have never seen Jerk in Maroon Town.( only recently) If what you say is correct the hole island should be expert of JerK .Your Historical reserch is great but it does'nt prove why Jerk dominates Boston. The Buccaneers(Pirates) were experts at meat curing. and often docked their ships at Boston Bay. Google "What pirates ate"

  • My father is from Port Antonio ..close to Boston Bay and He says Jerk did not originate from the Maroons ..but from the Buccaneers.Who dock their ships at Boston Bay .They captured wild pigs and cured the meat in holes in the gound covered by thick wood before going back out to sea. I have never seen Jerk in Maroon Town!

  • The buccaneers did not create jerk. The video is correct. The Taino's (they spoke Arawak) and the Maroons are the creators of jerk. When the British first arrived, they documented the cooking methods they encountered as they sought to lay claim to the island from the Spaniards. The buccaneers came as private mercenaries under the British crown for hire afterwards and established Jamaica (Port Royal )as their camp to raid Spanish, Portuguese and French ships on behalf of England.

  • The Buccaneers (pirates) would then split the stolen bounty with the British crown. That's why piracy lasted as long as it did because the British profited from the crime. When piracy was no longer profitable, the British sought to end it by appointing a pirate to reign in the terror of piracy. For his success he was awarded the governorship of Jamaica his name was Captain Henry Morgan (the pirate).
