My gerbil is a month old, breeder, and i got him on friday... he does the exact same thing! He loves to climb all the way up my arm! But his brother doesnt:P i need to tame him.
I'm planning to get to male gerbils this month, and I hope I can train mine to be that tame. What do you think of these names... Milo and Percy. : ) I like them a lot!
my gerbils ate all of their cages ... they escaped at night. They even escaped the store!!! The also bit the shit out of me. They were crazy active. They were black :)
Having gerbils come from a good breeder is part of tamness, but the ultimate best results come from spending lots of time with them. Break up the sessions so they dont become over stressed. All my gerbils end up becoming simply amazingly tame. So much fun! I do love them.
I have two agouti females named Jujube and Jaya :)
I just got them 4 days ago and when I have them in the bathtub with me,
they run up my shirt and into my pockets they let me pet their faces,
but they don't sit on my hand or let me pick them up without a fight. I don't try to pick them up often only when its necessary to put or take them out of the cage. How did you hand tame your gerbils?
I've always been used to rats and chinese hamsters, bought my first gerbil a few weeks ago, name's Begley. Is hand taming them no different than hamsters?
@mapleacrefarmful I don't think it matters now, cause he had an accident and passed away feb. I couldn't find a short/long cage so he climbed his current one and fell
@michaelcooper94 They were naturally very tame. It's one of the reasons I adopted them. They came from a tame line of gerbils, and the breeder did an excellent job socializing them, too.
BTW, they are that tame in their tank and during free runs, too... But I filmed them on the little shelf, because it made it easier to set up a tripod and record them since I didn't have anyone to help with the camera. :)
@fanofajstyles1234 They're almost two years old now and still just as tame as when I shot that video a year and a half ago. Marco and Polo are fantastically sweet gerbils. :)
how easy is it for a gerbil to escape cuz i might get 1 but i have cats and im scared one day when im out it will escape and it will run into the cats. so how easy is it for them to escape??? they seem clever animals!!
They can escape easily if they dont have the right cage, objects, or watchful eye. And If you do get gerbils, get at least 2 because they become extremely depressed and lonley if you don't play with them all the time. They can become depresed and die with only one gerbil. But geribls are great pets! And with the right TLC at the beginning of their lives, they should be very tame like the ones in the video here. :) Good luck!
@thefuturestars1 Make sure that you put them in the right type of housing. Gerbils are very good at escaping from the habitat-style plastic homes with tubes. Mostly because they can chew through almost anything. I keep my gerbils in glass tanks with mesh wire lids (available in the reptile aisle of the pet store), and I use lid clamps to hold the lids on. I haven't had an escape even once in seven years... But friends who have kept their gerbils in plastic homes had constant escapes.
if you get gerbils when they're babies and treat them really nice and give them treats and toys and everything and plasy with them every single day they'll become exceptionally tame! i have three babies and one adult gerbil all i've raised since they were tiny (not pink tho) and they climb out of their house everyday, look for me, then go back to their house again! they're better than hamsters and rats and will easily sit on your shoulder and watch the tele :)
Definitely give them time. Let them get used to your voice as well and let them also get used to your hand. i agree with the treats and the tiem out of the cage ina good sized playpen.
I had mine for 2 weeks and one of them almost got away. we really need some pointers. I did the food on hand thing but still they don't want to perch on my hand
Give them some time. If you've only had them for two weeks, they're still getting used to you and their new home. Also, time out of the tank is a better reward than food, so you might want to let them play in an empty bathtub filled with toys for a while each day... or turn a large plastic bin into a playground for them. (They can jump out of tubs, so keep an eye on them.) If they learn that you reward them with time to play outside the tank, they should warm up to you. :)
can someone please tell me the best way to tame my gerbils? i have two and have had them for two days, i also want to know why one of my gerbils wont go upstairs in my cage, the food and water is up there and after two days she still hasnt been up, i have to hand feed her.
