i love her she speaks of her love and heartache for her man heroin if brings her up and it brings her down just like a man does he average woman that is not addicted the comparison is crazy but yet so real and she was so beautiful
My first listening to Ms. Holiday was on an old 78rpm from a junk shop. I was ironing a shirt and started laughing at that lazy, little girl song on the flip side of "Strange Fruit." Within 15 minutes she had me hooked; crawled her way into my heart and never left. Tragic lives often give rise to genius.

Never liked her voice. It has an unpleasant sound to it. Like a weak, nasally whine. Imagine being serenaded by a bag lady? Yuck! This, coupled with her severe drug habit adds up to a big two thumbs down for me. Gimme Ella Fitzgerald anyday! Why did I pull up this vid then? So as to counter all the comments by B. Holiday worshipers who go on and on about her "amazing" voice and how she led such a "tragic" life, etc, etc. Heard it all before. In my books, Holiday's voice was highly overrated.
An amateur comment without merit? It's merely subjective. If I don't like a certain sound, such as Holiday's voice, then that's that regardless as to whether I've listened to one song or 100.
The best thing about your comment is that no one cares what you think, ultimately. Sure, you'll get over that, but it's so deliciously worth mentioning in an open forum!
You got me. I'm infatuated with your incisiveness and uniqueness. Alas, we are strangers in the night, exchanging digital quips, rather than backslappers enjoying each others' presences whilst stomping on Billie Holiday vinyl and CDs with steel-toe boots.

In order to stomp on B. Holiday CDs, that means I'd actually have to buy some of them, and hell would freeze over before I did that. The only way I could accomplish this is by going to someone else's home and stomping on their B. Holiday CDs while they're in the kitchen getting me a drink.

Wow, continued hostility from you? Ever considered anger management, seeing as how we're putting on our shrink hats now? As for my therapy, that consists of a daily intake of coffee and cigs.
Ella Fitzgerald, thought I love her, had NO grasp of emotional interpretation. Sounding like you just won the lottery when you're singing about lost love simply won't do for me. Obviously you are superficially concerned only with "pretty" sounds and fail to realize the impact of interpretive genius.
Thanks for engendering a second thought, jalex11...
I had a hostile "knee-jerk" reaction to your comment regarding Ella, and then came to really appreciate it. I'm a shamisen player, myself (Japanese lute), but I'm extremely into jazz and early popular music, too. So, I dunno, I liked your comment. Thanks.
I think that's slightly harsh, if you listen to Ella singing something like Gerogia on my mind or How deep is the ocean (choosing 2 pieces i know are on youtube) she sings them with appropriate emotion.
I'm not saying she has good emotional interpretation all the time, i'm just saying that stating that she had none at all is slightly harsh.
i obviously exaggerated when I said she sings sad songs like she just won the lottery. Ella does have songs where it sounds like she feels the lyrics but to me those are few and far between. When I hear Ella sing sophisticated lady what I hear is an exquisite, smoky sound, really the perfect voice but you never really feel she means what she's singing. When I hear Billie's version of that same song I hear the the story of the woman in the lyrics through that woman's voice.
I respect Ella Fitzgerald's musical artistry but I consider her devoid of emotion. She's always pleasant and a bit upbeat. Emotional range of one feeling. And I think began a trend of black performers who are more technical than emotional singers. Needless to say, I'm a Billie Holliday fan. She never gave you much, in terms of emotion, but what she did give had a punch. As if she were determined to remain composed but she took the audience an emotional journey despite herself.
love this lady. thanx for the upload. im learning more and more about her and all her jazz contemporaries. i really was put on from listening to amy winehouse and chrisette michele (and starbuck's hear music stores --lol). but either way...i think i have a girl crush.
Yeah, I think so. Billie was generally on the slightly plump side "naturally" when not on heroin and here she is noticably thin. This is the year before she died. I just try to appreciate the artistry there is even with...
Billie...barely 44 years old...a TV performance..so rare...you see and hear her influence on Carmen McRae, Anita O'Day and especially Abbey Lincoln. She was definitive.
That's Mary Osborne on guitar. I love this video -- two of my favorite jazz women. I think there were a couple of other tunes at this session. Billie looks so happy here, I think she dug having Mary on the gig. I believe that's Mal Waldron on piano?
Video of Billie Holiday performing is very scant so it's wonderful that this clip has surfaced in scuh good quality. Lady was a unique artist who despite her many personal problems was capable of bringing something beautiful to every song she sang. Thanks for posting this marvelous clip.
Just great music!

@umkalzum The lady playing the fine guitar behind lady day is Mary Osbourne, one of the unsung great among female jazz guitarists.

Also, don't kid yourself... I wasn't looking for anyone's approval. I was simply speaking my mind about the late, nasally-congested B. Holiday.

Right. Which means you were looking for approval online. Seek it elsewhere, like within.

It's enough to listen to Ella's singing : "he left me" - perhaps he left to buy a bread...?
Billie's "he left me" means deeply: I am now lonely. -
