Yes him jumping off the roof is significent of him comapring himself to a ballon saying, he would heep going higher and higher until he burst. Riki was such a great character.
Anyway genius movie, I love it and Miike's re-make was also great.
The best Japanese film of 2002 apparently. I havent seen it yet, but the reviews say its demonic & darker than Ichi the Killer. Its in the mail... can't wait. Looks like he totally loses it....
Great film, had to watch it twice. It's totally allegorical, rise and bloody downfall of someone refusing to follow suit to the "japaneese perfectionism". The final scene has like hectolitres of blood when he finally crashes, literally, it's the blood from all the people he took with him. Some people complained about the lack of realism in that and other scenes. But it's just a symbolic thing throughout, like the original it's inspired from. Kind of lonesome, amok-running yakuza film.
If the final scene is the same as the original by Fukasaku, where he just jumps of the roof, the blanket represents a balloon - in the very opening credits the interviewees are talking about the main character and what made him what he was. One of them says something like 'he was crazy, he was going to go up and up till he popped like a balloon'.
It is important he kills himself because this shows the individuals own resposibility for their (criminal) actions. The main character acts as a counterpoint to Fukasaku's own tendency to blame society. The interviews at the beginning set this question.

Probably the best remake ever (Fukasaku's was still better, though).
