I believe this song is about making the decision to follow Jesus. The Scripture says, "No man, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God" (Luke 9:62).
In my opinion, the overall context of the song is about destroying the works of sin in your life, and staying focused on Jesus to make you righteous.
The point really isn't about where he got this from. The messages he gives us, I think, is pretty clear to all. Bravery, enduring, all or nothing, reach your goal or die trying, those kinda concepts come in my mind and I really picture those men in the song with their fearless stare while watching their ships burning in the night. Very powerful stuff.
@ThisCakeIsDelicious uhh...sorry but no. WoW stole that idea from hernando cortez burning the ships, read k72296's comment up above in the top rated section.
People with thumbs down that should be up? Trollers! Go die. We don't need your kind ruining good majestic music with your loving of Jonas atrocities and Cyrus lies.
Thrice is magic. True music from the soul. My favorite song from the Fire CD.
I love this song. I enjoy how Thrice and their musical talent lets you paint images and thoughts from their music. This one is no exception. The entire Alchemy Index are like mini epics. Least that's my opinion. They've changed alot. From having a punk rock sound to a beautiful melodic, lyrically charged band =)
This song makes me think of thousands of metallic ships flying around a central, massive battleship hovering over a city, and me being the one to take it down in a violent battle unarmed, and riding the burning husk down into the ground, standing on its mast.
It's referring to how the (insert nationality because I can't remember) would burn their ships when invading a country to hide their numbers and to make retreating impossible so they would fight harder. Their options were literally victory and making the invaded land their new home, or death.
@smthngdffrnt Anyone with any kind of military training or schooling would employ this tactic when determined to take and hold ground when concerned or doubtful of their men's resolve or morale. The fire could be and often was blamed on the people being invaded to put a little righteous indignation and desperation into their warriors. A false flag attack if you will. To plunder and fight for gold or land is a man's fight, to fight for your life is the fight of an animal. Excellent music.
I think this song is about Hernando Cortez and his troops of 500 Spanish soldiers. They conquered the Aztek empire in 16th century.
When Cortez arrived in Mexico, his first orders included burning the ships. There was no hesitation after that. They were going to win or die. The story is about ultimate commitment.
I heard of a similar story with Julias Ceaser , when he went to invade Carthage, he had the ships burned after the landing so that there was option of surrender. A somewhat romanticized suicide mission.
@k72296 Umm, no. The song is about a reference in the Bible to Roman legions burning their fleets after arriving in a foreign land. That display of courage many times deterred any fighting and their enemies would mostly surrender before the fight began.
@Ewell06 If that's the case, then why does the song say imply that the soldiers intend to die fighting before they go home? If it were talking about the Romans who did it as a gesture of power, there would be no need for the "To victory or underground." theme of the song.
Not trying to flame you, and I can see where you're coming from, but I think in the end this song may have been inspired by events such as the ones talked about, but isn't really dedicated to any single one of them.
@k72296 Yeah I do think it's about that too, but some things to clear out:
1.-He didn't only use his men but used mostly warriors from other tribes that hated the Mexicas witch brings me to my other point.
2.-It was the Mexica empire, the Azteks were their predecesors and in the time of Cortez were scattered in some swamps i think north of where the Mexica's territory ended.
3.-Hernan burned the ships so that nobody would flake on him or return to Cuba and accuse him.
Considering the fact that your comment is 4 years old, this may have been mentioned many a time before, but I feel that 'Vernon God Little' is worthy of a quote. I was lucky enough to have an audience with the author a few months ago and, apparently, the number of 'fucks' in his Booker Prize winning novel equates with the number of soldiers which conquered the Aztek empire in the 16th century.
(I reserve the right to be mistaken, since it is New Year's Eve and I am very drunk.)
