Wow, Im surprised to see from the comments how many people didn't really like this! =/ The plot is pretty fast-paced and complex, sometimes even convoluted, but never ridiculous. This is in my top 10% of all anime shows I've ever watched.

I actually read somewhere that the real d'Eon de Beaumont often claimed to have been a female - there were even bets in England about whether or not it was true. An autopsy after his death revealed his gender to be male, but they also found out that he may have had some sort of condition that stopped him from going through puberty.

Whether it was true or not, it would explain why records say he never had a deep voice, and why no pictures of him ever depicted him with facial hair.

D'eon wasn't a spy. He was a member of the French aristocracy, a dragoon (by title), and one of the greatest fencers of all time. D'eon, however, saw very little (if any) combat in his life. His fencing reputation as a great fencer stem from his victories with the foil (a trend in fencing that would continue). As for his crossdressing, it in fact was somewhat of frequent a sexual tendency of his which resulted in him being brought to court and having to testify to being a man or woman.
