İt is very similar indeed. almost 100 years ago these were almost same language, but sice the language reform in Turkey, lots of new words are invented in Turkish to so called "purify" ! the language. I beleive this has made it little bit artificial and different from other Turkic languages. So Azerbaijanies can understan Turkish quite well, but Turks would have some difficulty in uderstanding Azerbaijani.
