  • Some people on here.. Respect the Chief! C'mon people ! Those people before had no reason to bitch, they just had to. I don't give a rats ass if you were indian or not.. You didnt care before ,and the people now dont... But NOW they do it in little messages like on here.. Get over it people. GO CHIEF! And UofA

  • I will admit though.... @illinimarine7 you're info is SO out of whack that you have truly given me a deep interest in this particular mascot. To find out as much as I can, Kudos Mr "non-bigot"

  • Ya well some college and universities used to be houses of genocide and colonization before they were popular and envied by so many. Thousands of Native children literally died to get out of them. So... whatever. "go cheify poo"... god you people are so weird.

  • i was there

  • Still chokes me up. :'(

  • Good thing, im sick of racist mascots.

  • Eh whatever. Bucky's better anyway.

  • @TehSmellulare Trollin. You can't even compare the Chief to Bucky the fucking Badger...

  • the chief looks so sad! He looks as if he is about to cry! LONG LIVE CHEIF ILLNI!

  • Hail to the chief

  • Sadly, even Three In One is up for debate. SUPPORT WHAT'S THE LAST THING THE FIGHTING ILLINI HAVE OF CHIEF ILLINIWEK!!!

  • The only reason I liked this is because it's his final dance.

  • Hail To The Chief!! Go Illini!!

  • BRING HIM BACK!

  • I cant resist myself from adding our fans have never needed the motivation to get "riled" up....were riled up before we get there. We have one of the best fan bases in the nation. Bet on that.

  • what also ppl for get to recognize is that chief outfit was given to them by an American Indian tribe. they asked them to wear that in their honor and they are now actually mad about them not continuing the chief.

  • @CubsVsSoxchicago

It was given to the university by one Indian person not a collective tribe. lol

  • Okay, so all these comments saying that the so called "chief" is an honor to Native people are just ignorant! I'm Shoshone/Paiute, I've lived my entire life on a reservation, never in all my 18 years have I seen a Native dance like this. I mean come on, this dude looks like he's auditioning for Bring It On! Jumping up on the air, stomping his feet, and what's with the crossing of the arms? But I couldn't blame the ignorant people at the university who created the "Chief," they probably didn't k

  • @conchoRoman39 It may not be the most...authentic but the chief was more than just a mascot to U of I. So it may not be a "honor necessarily but it was one of the greatest college traditions and taking it away is bs.

  • If someone finds the chief tradition offensive, why not just change the name of our state? Seeing as it's named after the Illini tribe and our state now represents government corruption and scumbags like Blago I'd be a bit more offended to have my name affiliated with a state like Illinois than the dignified and honorable chief. If someone wants to call the chief racist, I suggest they stop being self righteous pricks and actually see what racism truly is: it's oppression, not a dance ritual.

  • They brought chief back last night for volleyball.

  • The last chief was in my fraternity. AKL has pride in the tradition.

  • @tnup76 Mascot? No my friend. Being a Fighting Illini myself, the chief was no mascot. He didn't patrol the sidelines riling up the crowd. He didn't work as a cheerleader nor did he do the silly things that mascots do. In fact, The Chief predated mascots. What he did was unite current students with 80 years of alumni under one tradition that never changed. Natives don't want their traditions to be messed with, so what is wrong with an AUTHENTIC Lakota garb being warn with a positive message?

  • @illinimarine7 Damn Straight! Couldnt of said it better myself. But what can you expect a real true Illini fan would agree with every single word you said, someone who isnt for our Illini just doesnt get what he means to us. They dont understand what this team means to us. Thats aight cuz Illini ever comes back every damn year stronger than ever. GO ILLINI!!!!!!!! <3

  • @illinimarine7 Maybe the fact that it IS NOT AUTHENTIC and as a native american, this obviously is NOT POSSITIVE if it offends native peoples.

  • @lizardjoel You're obviously not Illini since you can't seem to spell POSITIVE. So lets find out some things. You're Native? What tribe? How much of you is actually Native? And just FYI, look at the official history of Chief Illiniwek. The suit was MADE by Sioux women. So it is 100% Lakota. Its funny, you claim bigotry and post on here not knowing what you are talking about. Typical media fed rage. I'm quite sad for you

  • The second Chief Illiniwek, was the first to appear in authentic American Indian regalia. “In the summer of 1930, I went, at my own expense, to the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. I hitchhiked out, called an Indian agent and explained my mission. He and an Indian trader called in an older Sioux woman. She and two younger women made the suit.” There ya have it....not authentic? Now you take credit away from the Lakota tribe and their craftsmanship. Way to be "POSSITIVE"

  • @illinimarine7 authentic. HA.

  • @n8tivlily see above...moron. The Lakota tribe made the suit. Try again

  • @illinimarine7 Which lakota tribe? The "pine ridge lakota tribe"? lol. You are such a dork. Can I ask you a question? Honestly, do you REALLY feel those women even knew what they were making the regalia for? I bet you the state of NY and a box full of beads that they didn't. You're little story up there speaks of a conversation between the mascot, the indian agent and a trader. Yea... that TOTALLY makes this suit AUTHENTIC right? To me it makes this suit STOLEN. Stick THAT in yer peace pipe.

  • @n8tivlily Oh so since they don't fall into YOUR view of what Native American is, they must not be real Native Americans. Just like Obama must not really be black because he wears a suit and helps whites and blacks. Who is the bigot now?

  • @illinimarine7 dude pick up a book. An indian agent back in the 30s wasn't a member of the tribe. He was usually a white dude who tried to keep the Natives in line for the gov. The traders? Ya, maybe some of them were really native, but I bet this one was a whitey too. Knew enough Lakota to make the ladies think they were making some regalia for someone who would respect it enough to NOT dance around like an idiot at a basketball game.

  • what you people don't seem to understand is you aren't the tribe. Stop acting like you know what and how they feel. They were honored by this tradition for over 80 years. They weren't the people who stopped it. Ignorant, arrogant, self-righteous student activists started the whole "its offensive" talk and got it banned. Stop acting like you are protecting a vulnerable helpless group with no voice. They were honored by the tradition for 80 years now stop whining you got what you want go cry

  • @stunninrunnincaw

I live in C-U & these small town hicks could care less if it offends a group of people. if the School administration took the same approach like Florida St. did the tradition would've still continued w/o being offensive to native americans. living here I know that Champaign Urbana is very racially segregated but likes to put up a persona of being diverse. reality is that east central IL breeds people like Matt Hale, Benjamin Smith & the church of the creator.

  • @HiphopDesigns010 So....what you're saying is buy off the tribe?

  • @stunninrunnincaw Its just a bunch of white kids who took it upon themselves to "right the wrongs." Typical white guilt and "Whitey knowing what's best for minorities"

  • Washington Redskins... Columbus Day... yeah they ignore those and go along with them but they attack a tradition that honors Native Americans. Our country is full of a bunch of nut jobs that are screwing it up every day.

  • @GOllumboy101 i totally agree with you .... some people just don't care until it affects them..... i mean what if the football team was called washington honkys with a picture of george washington on a white background. bet many wouldn't like it!!!! and to make matters worse ..... so much bad had been done to the natives and such things are anything but honoring them.... how could they pretend to honor something that they wiped off of this face of the earth almost completely?

  • @lilmyboy oh please, what civilization DOESN'T have blood on their hands? i think people are making a big deal out of this. it's true we should never forget what happened, but do we really need to limit or punish ourselves to such an extent? i mean c'mon.... it's a symbol for goodness sake. plus, it's not like we were being racist or disrespectful. i would think, in most occasions, using a tribal name or a native american symbol or person IS out of honor and respect

  • @Oblivionflower if it wouldn't hurt them or offend, then i would understand what you're saying but it does!!!! it hurts them in their souls. they have lost so much.... others will never fully understand .... they have such a respect and love for their elders. and 80 plus years can't outdo the length the natives history has. it's not like they are doing this just because it actually means something to them and they are hurt. the chiefs, the dances.... it's sacred to them.... they deserve RESPECT

  • @lilmyboy u can point 2 every civilization and find a hurt soul. i may not be able to understand fully, but i'm sure my ancestors did. i have cherokee, choctaw, and apache native american blood running through my veins (choctaw princess and cherokee princess from my father). i'm still told stories by my grandmother of how the indians were treated, but i live in the here and now and refuse to place blame or be hurt by a mascot. i'm of native AMERICAN descent and i fully SUPPORT the chief.

  • @Oblivionflower that's quite interesting about your ancestors because my hubby also is about 1/16 choctaw/ cherokee. i know even natives opinion on these matters are divided. i just feel so bad about what the natives had to go through and it can never be undone. i still think, if the majority of the natives feel that it is hurtful, it'd be nice of others, with less of a painful past, to be respectfull to their feelings and wishes. =)

  • @lilmyboy sorry, that sounded a lot meaner than how i wanted it too. i'm not trying to say you're wrong, in fact you bring up good points. i was just giving my input.

  • so...let me get this straight. Because a handfull of PC wack jobs get there panties in a bunch the majority of the rest of us have to suffer? LONG LIVE THE CHIEF!

  • why do they think it's discriminating!?!? were honoring this great chief not mocking it!!!

  • @sam30568 That's not how they feel though.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm sorry but the dance look effing reTTAUURDid. I can see why the red people were offended LOL.

  • I feel the University of Illionis; I love the Redskins and I would fight tooth and nail to keep our traditions alive!!

  • Rip chief :(

  • what abous usc and florida state they throw burning stick into the ground if you take illinois away take usc and florida state to

  • what abous usc and florida state they throw burning stick into the ground

  • o this hurts my feelings wahhhhh wahhhhh. please people im of irish decent and the whole representation of the irish being nothing but alcoholics and wearing green and looking for the leprechauns gold is pretty offensive but you don't hear us getting out panties in a wad. get a hobby. maybe thats why you all find this offensive because you have nothing else to do but sit here and bitch.

  • @pantherspwnall

The Irish are white. You lot are now honorary white folks. No comparison.

  • @NopeJPeg im black and im irish. what now?

  • @pantherspwnall

Yeah, "black". Cool story bro, shore up the defenses, backed into a corner, etc.

  • @NopeJPeg midol and new tampons look into it maybe you wont contribute to the wussification of america afterwards.

  • @pantherspwnall

I don't know. Your dad's not keen on letting others borrow his stuff.

  • so you're saying that "The Chief" represents *ALL* Native Americans? Does the Lucky Charms guy represent all Irish People? How about Hulk Hogan, does he represent all Americans?

No. You can't pick and choose like you're trying to. The squeaky wheel gets the oil, but always gets replaced. Just remember your ranting and raving when your time comes. Karma is a bitch, and always comes back around...hope im there when yours does.

  • Lucky we can't put no law suites on them

  • theyre not "indians" people theyre native americans if they were indians they would be from india some people that are preaching political correctness should take a look a themselves

  • Do you hear the Irish whining about the Celtics or the Fightin' Irish? No, I didn't think so.

  • @freelincoln87

Implying the Irish have a say in Native issues. Apples and oranges.

  • @freelincoln87 i dont hear Indians complaining about The Chief either. Just bored rich white people.

  • fuck america!

  • We don't watch sports in our home. Which is like a crime here in this state! But, I am really glad we don't. Because when the first time my daughter saw "Chief Wahoo" of the Cleveland Indians she looked at me so shocked. Then she said "Mom is that supposed to be a Native American man?"

    I quietly said, "Yes."

"That is so mean. Why would they make fun of us like that?"

Well, what should've I told my child? Schools need mascots?

If it hurts children it's wrong PERIOD

  • Since the weak kneed fools at the U of I bent over for the NCAA I have not given them a thin dime. Little wonder that the state is broke and the University likewise.....and the President comes sniveling asking for money. This 1967 U of I graduate and current Texan says not only no, but hell no......send your begging to Washington...they love socialist pigs like you...

  • what a great representation of us. dumb white %$#%^$#. (not to all white people)

  • Comment removed

  • @PrkchpsNaplsaws yea I am. And I know racism when I see it.

  • Comment removed

  • @PrkchpsNaplsaws so what if native americans gave the regalia. The way he's dancing, the way he holds his hands up, the headress, the music, it's all a bad representation and it hurts.

  • @butkicker75 then you need thicker skin. The Chief is not a representation of YOU. He is an HONORED symbol of pride and tradition. He will return. It's just a matter of time.

  • @PrkchpsNaplsaws

lol All Native Americans or just one individual? I never knew Frank Fools Crow stood for every single Indian EVER. Whites live up to their stereotype of being untrustworthy all the time. Mention treaties and their panties start to bunch up.

  • Comment removed

  • @PrkchpsNaplsaws

Nice reverse tactic there. Won't work. Your insinuation is that one Frank Fools Crow giving (some accounts mention he sold it) to the university makes it an act approved by all Lakotas or all Indians. The Lakotas never gave the regalia as a group. One Indian did. The Irish argument won't work here. This isn't about the Irish or typical reverse white tactics (again living up to the stereotype). Good going.

  • Comment removed

  • oh yeah.. i feel so honored. thank you white folks.

  • @SavageChiklette shut up. you are white. I know you

  • @SavageChiklette did you know the costume was crafted by a REAL Native American? Not all American Indians hate the chief.

  • My heart goes out to illini fans, traditions like this is what makes college sports great. I couldn't imagine my Kansas without the rock chalk chant.

  • we are going to miss you Chief... *sob*

  • It was BS because even if a white guy is doing it that means that he respects the native american dance!!!

  • the florida state seminole can stay around tho...he just throws flaming spears

  • @jwegener14

Florida State has the blessing of the Seminole Tribe. Sadly, political correctness has ruined this country.

  • chiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeefffffffffffffff

  • seriously almost tearin up watchin this.... damn

  • there all new trustees now ...maybe since the school is broke and the state is broke, the right kind of donation AND COMMON SENSE will bring the Chief back

  • White people have no clue about our culture. Having a white boy jump around and making a fool of him self does not not exposes my culture. Maybe you should learn a persons culture before you post anything.

  • At the time, I was a fairly young child and didn't understand this, but now it almost brings a tear to my when the University of Notre Dame can represent the Icelandic with Fighting Irish, who aren't even in the USA, and the USC can represent the Trojans with a Trojan warrior that runs onto the football field, sticking a blade into the 50 yard line but we can't represent our culture, with an Indian, the Native to our Country? That's bull shit NCAA, bull shit...

  • Go Illinois Krakkers. It feels good to see 16 thousand fucks cry over you mocking and ridiculing a culture that you massacre and almost destroyed.

  • @indigenousatwar1 Oh shut the hell up, the Chief was a legend, I don't think we've almost destroyed anything. If anything we've exposed the culture to America, to see what the Natives really are, beautiful.

  • @indigenousatwar1 Oh cry me a river. Nobody here did anything to your people. Same old rhetoric

  • See, Staple to the program! ESPN knows this is bull.... I'm a Wisconsin fan, but I still liked the chief. I feel for the Illini fans. You can only thank the liberal blowhards for changing your tradition...

  • florida's display is not offensive at all! they have to go through a training program to find out whats offensive and whats not.

  • FUCK YOU INDIANS WHO DONT THINK ITS AN HONOR TO BE REPRESENTED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS

  • FUCK YOU INDIANS WHO DONT THINK ITS AN HONOR TO BE REPRESENTED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS

  • florida state mascot puts a stick in the ground with fire on it

  • and also the name vikings or fighting irish isnt racist towards people of icelandic, irish, and european decent? clearly there is a favoritism towards minorities of where we live which i believe is very racist to minorities of of other lands :(

  • the liberals will fight to completely eradicate the native american mascot from schools, universities, and all club/sports programs... once that is done generations from now the memory of these great people will be forgotten.. truely sad

  • get over it he's gone and you bitch en about it ain't gonna bring him back and if only 2-7% are offended then why the fuck did every body make such a big deal about it

  • My grandchildren and I were there that night with my sister and we cried. I have not supported the Illini since the Chief was retired and will not support the Illini until the Chief returns. Go Seminoles!

  • @Nanachristy1 ya know thats pretty sad that you blame the University. It isn't their fault. The NCAA literally gave them no choice but to retire Chief! If they hadn't there probably wouldn't be enough money coming in to support the sports programs and he would be retired anyway. Although I still haev no idea how Florida State gets away with it.

  • @gund2281 me to puting a stick in the ground with fire on it . that is way worse than a dance

  • @Nanachristy1 florida states thing is way worse. go illinois

  • Regardless of whether or not you think this mascot is racist, two facts must be recognized: 1) It's a lame (extremely lame) mascot, and 2) It's a lame (extremely lame) dance. I only repeat the words 'extremely lame' in hopes that Illini fans get it through their thick skulls. Get a new mascot. Even the rip-off of the San Diego Chicken was better than this.

  • @SuperChristopher2518 Lol, just stop embarrassing yourself please. I doubt any Illini fan gives a fuck about what another school thinks about them.

  • CHIEF!!! We miss you. =(

  • Hmmm... A university for a state that is named after an indian tribe itself can't have an indian as a mascot? What a fucking joke...

  • @9kelc First... its not named after the tribe, it's named for the Illinois natives who fought in the World War I. Check yo facts

  • CHIEF!!! Complete BS that we cannot keep our mascot. He was such a great symbol for the university and will always be honored!!! Chief forever!

  • American Indians have every right to be pissed off at the United States for the (still unackowledged) genocide against their people, and for the negative way they were portrayed for years - and still are, sometimes. They had every single right in the world to lobby and remove the symbol, and the NCAA was right to respect their wish.

But this is tragic. Look at those tears. Do you cry for the removal of a symbol of hate? No - to us, this was a symbol of respect. We respect your feelings though.

  • @hellstrife Too bad this was a tribute to the Native Americans, not a stereotype. Now shut the fuck up please.

  • 16,000 people, in complete and total respect. It would be hard to find that kind of respect for the symbol of any other school in the country.

  • Wow, Ive never been so torn in my life. I hated that dance, its repulsive, demeaning and truly offensive. Yet its an 80 so year old tradition that the students and fans clearly love and cherish being taken from them and moving them to tears. No idea what to think.

  • i had to watch and comment again. it makes me sick to my stomach like having a muslim for a president. liberalism is a societal cancer that will destroy anything and everything good on this earth. pathetic. the cheif was honor.

  • @MOUNTAINOUS I totally agree with you. But in the end, the right decision was made.

  • every one of you rotten fucking liberals that made the chief go away i put a ninja curse on you. i am from illinois and i am now on mt hood oregon. i just found out the chief was gone. to all liberals and politically correct mother fuckers. eat shit. fuck you. the cheif was pride for the indian. not a disgrace you fools. by the way fuck muslims and fuck the quoran. how do you like that liberals. this is not aimed to the guy who put the vid up. it is to those who made the chief leave

  • i remember watching this, made my entire family cry

  • CHIEF

  • This all started as a way of promoting team spirit and not meant as something to be demeaning to anyone, but times have changed. This is a great school, time to promote team spirit in another manner.

  • @manuelherrera777 you mean people have gotten more gay. times have not changed. the liberal slime homos have changed. god forbid do the pledge of allegence at school or a prayer. but how about gay teachers. or gay marriage that is ok. TIMES HAVE NOT CHANGED. THE FAGS AND THE PATHETIC LIBERALS AND POLITICAL CORRECTNESS IS DESTROYING OUR WORLD

  • @MOUNTAINOUS you are an idiot

  • I used to love this University ... until they decided the bottom dollar was more imporatant ... Regardless of who loves this 'mascot' or not (and I've been on both sides of the arguement) UIUC, start treating your students better, or we'll forget you faster than the chief !!!!

  • I've been going to games (football and basketball) since I was 5, have been going since I was 5(obviously), and am also an alumni. What makes me sadder than getting rid of the chief is how this University is treating it's alumni and current students. When I was a student there (2001-2006) the University had escalated it's tuition 2000% .... When I was a freshman at UIUC, I would pay $400 a semester for classes. By the time I graduated I was paying more than $3000 a semester in tuition .

  • this still burns my ass they made them take the chief away, I remember whatching him at half time when I was a kid.

  • As a native American I do not think the dance is demeaning. When would white people every even think of native Americans if not for ritual such as this?

  • Fuck the chef!

  • @ImOfNope What do you have against chefs? They prepare you nice meals at fancy restaurants and you say fuck them? You know what...FUCK YOU!!!

  • it was some little bitching native american liberal professor at U of I that made them remove it!

  • You can write this down, you can take it to the bank -- the Chief will be back.

  • There is no way the Chief's war dance was politically incorrect or offensive to the Illini Tribe! First of all the Illini tribe is an extinct tribe; there are none of them left! They claim that the Chief is an insult to the tribe's memory, when in reality he is a tribute! It's not like the school just threw together a cheap costume and a few crappy dance moves; they did hard-core research to recreate an accurate attire for the Chief and war dance! It's a perfect tribute! BRING BACK THE CHIEF!

  • There is nothing but respect here. We live in a sad age where anything resembling tradition is destroyed. If anything in the public eye is seen as somehow representative of a people or religion, its "offensive". Let's all just live in a dull world, where we pay tribute to nothing. If I acted offended anytime Greeks were represented in sports or culture I'd be pretty bitter. Good thing I'm proud of my heritage. Let the extremely small PC minority talk, its how they show their insecurity.

  • think about it like this.....what if it was the illinois niggers....the washington wetbacks....would it be racist then???? THE POINT IS, IT PERPETUATES NEGATIVE STEREOTYPES TO CHILDREN THAT "THIS IS HOW INDIANS ARE IN SOCIETY" AND IT SHOWS NATIVE CHILDREN THAT AMERICA STILL HAS NO RESPECT FOR THEIR CULTURE AFTER ALL IT'S BEEN THROUGH...IT'S ILLEGAL TO HAVE A SLAVE BUT STILL NOT ILLEGAL TO DEMEAN AND DEGRADE ANOTHER HUMAN BEING?

  • Disgusting. You people really should be ashamed of yourselves.

  • its sad, I've been going to Illini games since I was a kid and everyone completely repects the chief, they weren't making fun of him at all....it was pure reverence...

  • Glad the so called chief is dead fuck him silly idiot thats not even how we dressed over here or danced, you don't think this is'nt negitive just read all the bull shit your typeing, this ain't honor this is hate.

  • @MrTugzy How is this hatred? I haven't heard one legitimate argument on how it is hatred. It may be historically incorrect, but it clearly is trying to honor the Illini. If I'm not mistaken I believe the original Chief outfit was given by the Illini tribe (which is gone now). Live and let live for Christ's sake people. Let's stop banning things SOME people don't like. If you don't like it don't watch it. Its not my fault your easily irritated...

  • @TheCocofred have you seen any Illini people...haha your funny*

  • Why do minorities bitch the loudest?

  • Having nearly destroyed the Native culture, we Americans reserve the right to mock and make a spectacle of it. My grandpa died in the Indian Wars.

  • PC people are retarded. Why was this tradition taken away? How is it offensive to anyone? If anything, it perpetuates some influence of Native American culture in the US. What other influences of native americans are there. None than I can think of. Oh yea - drug farms and casinos, awesome! Hope the next generation is somewhat smarter and brings this back. Go Blue!

  • gay

  • and natives r a race of people, vikings were an occupation of individuals not a race, infact most scandinavians were farmers and herdsman, see go read a book, bunch of morons and they say they're college students, hmm no wonder this country is going down the toilet, and heres a fact, if the people who claim to be honoring dont like wat ur doing the THEY DONT LIKE IT GET THE FUCKING HINT!!!

  • @lion3p0 Actually, I have Native American friends, they were honored by this dance. One almost cried. This mascot was in NO WAY racist. It is honorable.

  • hey when they have a problem with it i will be there protesting tright along side them, and i mean REAL scandinavians and the REAL descendants of vikings not americans who say they're scandinavians,

  • yeah if i had a dime for every asshole who said "oh i know an indian who likes it" hahaha makes me laugh, funny my tribes, elders and non native allies despise it and am glad its gone, and to the dumb ass tool who tried to use the vikings as a defense,

  • I am a REAL fancy dancer and a direct descendent of the Illini confederacy and the chief is a total crock of shit and all of the people who support it and need it so damn bad, all it proves is how deep seated the rascism and utter ignorance is in this country, but the chief is gone forever and soon enough so will all of the others

  • @lion3p0

Yes, because the chief is soooo rascist. Isn't rascism hatred towards another a race. I don't see much hatred in the voices of the people shouting chief. Am I crazy, or is it that maybe Chief Illiniwek represents pride, integrity, and honor. It is meant to honor the Illini Confederacy, not offend it. I don't see anyone from the scandinavian contries complaining about the Minnesota Vikings mascot so...

  • Just visited my Alma Mater. Felt an emptiness in the Assembly Hall with the fans' mournful "Chieeeeffff" . The Chief represented what we thought was noble in native culture: honour, courage, dignity, strength, community. Who will think of the Peoria people with concern, after this Pyrric victory by the opponents of a tradition that celebrated the sense of community of the University of Illinois and the state's heritage as the "The Land of the Illini"?

  • No worries. I heard he accepted the starring role in a commercial for a anti-littering campaign...

  • FUCK THE NCAA!!!! CHIEF STILL LIVES!!

  • what chicago suburb is this native american from?

  • @jaxhawk06

Wow, that's an ignorant conclusion -- that a kid from the suburbs couldn't possibly actually be Native American. Not all of them live on reservations, you know. A lot of people of native descent actually do live in the suburbs. As it is, this young man may be caucasian, but a literal interpretation is not the point of the Chief.

  • No student portraying Chief Illiniwek was of American Indian heritage. Try again

  • You might take your own advice in response to LEWSADERent. I shall quote myself, -- "a literal interpretation is not the point of the Chief." Also, you failed to address the salient remarks -- in fact you "cleverly" avoided any substantive response to my comment. Before you criticize others prejudice and incorrect assumptions, you might be best served to address your own. Try again.

  • U of I isnt even in chicago you fuck wad

  • i know that you fucking dumbass. did i ever say that? learn some fucking reading comprehension

  • @jaxhawk06 If you look at the history of Chief Illiniwek's who have served over the years, the vast majority were kids from down state Illinois and were also Eagle Scouts.

  • According to "The Paradox of Cultural Property" by Naomi Mezey, the Chief costume was created and refined by Boy Scouts seeing themselves as "white experts" on "Indian crafts and dance." The central problem is that from the beginning, American culture and identity has "been repeatedly

forged through the appropriation and performance of Indian images and rituals." The Chief is the white man's idea of what "authentic" N.A. culture was rather than actual cultural property of NAs, is her argument.

  • this is incorrect. This particular outfit and dance was taught by the Illini tribe. And the outfit was an actual Chief's outfit, mind you. The chief stands more as a symbol. The dance is handed down among students after they graduate. So to say this is very much incorrect. White man didn't create the dance, the Illini gave the dance to the white man.

  • I was under the impression that both the costume and dance were actually Sioux in origin, not from a tribe of the Illini nation (the only surviving, tmk, are the Peoria, now in Oklahoma). Either way, it is/was an authentic Native American "fancy dance" and costume. Also, one might question how American culture is "forged through the appropriation and performance of Indian images and rituals" given that nearly every study I have read traces American culture to primarily an Anglo-British basis.

  • watching this makes me fucking sick. They took away a schools tradition and for what because it makes Native Americans look bad bullshit I have a friend who is full blooded Native American and he took pride in the chief. Everything has to be so politically correct that they took away 81 year old tradition just thrown away

  • @martinracn06 yeah. but look at it this way: They can take away Chief Illiniwek, but they cant take away the spirit of Illinois

  • @martinracn06 sorry man but defending the co-opting and exploitation of the imagery of an exploited people by saying "it's tradition" is just a bogus argument. As is pointing out that "you have a friend..."

  • @martinracn06 go wet your pants somewhere else the Indians won one :D

  • you people fucking disgust me.

  • who

  • Just a quick fact check here - the "Illini" were not a tribe. The name is short for "Illinois Confederation". They were 13 tribes.
