I'm almost positive it's a result of the French capturing and violently removing the two fingers from English soldiers that used the longbow ...I think the English mastered the weapon first thus at a distance the soldiers would "show" their two fingers as an act of defiance. ...from their it became fuck off.
@TooSlim73 You are right I think. The Two fingers up gesture was first recorded being used against french soldiers by English longbowmen. The English longbowmen were incredibly skilled and deadly and as such, the french would, when returning captured soldiers for whatever reason, return them without their bow drawing fingers. The gesture is one of defiance. It never meant, and still doesn't mean "Fuck off". It is just a gesture of defiance that is often used with a loud "FUCK OFF"
@ResidentEvilacPiano ha i wonder if there were any UK vistors that came to american when the peace loving hippys were around "EVERYONE KEEPS GIVING ME THE FINGERS" lol
@ResidentEvilacPiano No, they are often used in the same situations and often to convey the same emotion but the American middle finger salute, as with the english middle finger salute (Which is where it originated) means literally "Up yours" and is a gesture to portray sticking your longest finger up their arse. The Two finger is a defiant gesture used by english longbowmen toward french troops who would cut their bow drawing fingers off.

This is probably how they wrote the line for Shaun of the Dead where he says.. "I'll stop doing it when you stop laughing."

Nick's right, a theatre, film and TV degree sounds like a wanky doss degree.
