  • it breaks my heart to see people shooting portrait with on camera flash casting all those ugly shadows. Yes flash brackets are ok, but i prefer using my flash off camera using a flash cord and bouncing my flash.

  • I could not agree more, The course develops from the camera flash, used correctly to off camera flash using Grids, umbrellas and softboxes. Balancing with ambient etc. Terry

  • @amacher58 if your gonna bounce your flash why u taking it off camera?the main point for taking flash off camera is to be able to use it direct with diffusion at certain angles..i tink its perfectly fine to use flash on camera if ur bouncing wont make much of a difference wer u put it if your just gonna bounce anyway.

  • Do you know many of you missed potentially good expressions while you where chimping on your lcd's. have faith i your expertise. Do you think film photographers had lcd's to check their work?

  • Great!

  • Interesting. Seems you are in the UK? I would absolutely love to get across the pond and shoot a wedding in the UK sometime, I just don't know anybody getting married over there :/

  • Fantastic! thanks so very much for the tips! and I will be watching for your new vids! =0)

  • I am planning to produce a new video without the dreaded

    sto-fen so watch this space.

  • one more question, what do you teach your students when it comes to getting the exposure right? do you have to swith shutter speed or ap every time you move around with the bride and groom? or just use one of the auto settings?

  • Hi, at a wedding I will use either tv, av or m depending upon the shot. I do not have time to take meter readings apart from when I am shooting the bride and groom on their own. In camera reflected light readings sometimes and also balancing ambient with flash through the use of the shutter speed. I work with the flash on a bracket as well as on a light stand with radio triggers.

  • well If I had the chance I would love to go to one of your courses you seem like a very good wedding photography teacher! I myself will be doing 2 weddings and pray I get it right. lol

  • It is coming to my attention that comments are being made about the stofen "diffuser" being used as well as direct flash. I should point out that the whole purpose of the course is to direct people on the correct use of camera flash and as a result they need to know how not to do it. Of course the Stofen is useless as a diffuser, it is designed to be used in the bounce position. Secondly, a great deal of the course is about taking your camera flash of camera.

  • I wonder if the bride got tons of pictures of her with red eye from direct flash.

  • No red eye. Delegates are taught how to use on camera flash correctly and advised to take off camera where ever possible. I need to show delegates the considerable difference between on camera and of camera. I use skyport triggers, umbrellas and grids to get the results I want. Weddings can be hectic affairs and very often on camera (with a bracket) is the only way to capture the "Moment". People on my course have not yet bought the right equipment, they are on the course - to be educated.

  • A whole squad of togs all with direct flash inside sto-fens. Ouch. Poor, poor, poor. If no direction is given away from using direct with no bounce, what good is the course?

  • People arrive at my course with the sto-fen "diffuser" it is my job to tell them they are no good as a diffuser and advise them to remove them. I teach them how to take their flash off camera with skyport triggers, umbrella and grids. The course starts with not how to do it and continues with how it should be done. Thats what teaching is all about. The creative image results my delegates get from of camera flash during the course are stunning.

  • everyone who has one of those stupid flash diffusers on, obviously doesn't know how diffusers work. Hopefully they will learn someday that it just reduces intensity of the flash, and also messes up your ETTL metering.

  • Steven: If came on my course you would find out that that is exactly what I tell people. If they choose to continue to use it then that is there choice. Most of the course now is with flash off camera, triggered with skyport and shoot through brolly or other light modifiers. Bounce flash with micro mini or the use of Grids.

  • The important thing with the diffusers and things like that is simply to make the flash into a larger light source. So instead of just 2" by 3" or however small it might be.. It becomes 3, 4, 5x as bigger. Thus providing softer light.

  • Oh and I was talking about flash diffusers like the gary fong or other models like that. The small little omni-bounce diffusers or whatever they're called (Which it looks like almost everyone had on) don't do, imo, any noticeable or worthwhile diffusion.

  • Exactly, That is what I teach the delegates. Those that use them stop using them after my course. The whole course is about firstly controlling your flash on camera (brackets preferred) and then off camera on light stands and skyport triggers with umbrellas. We have to start somewhere and how not to do it is where we start then progress to how it should be done.

  • sunBOX :)

  • Looks good! and worth the money.

  • damn shes a hot model

  • I have done this course it is worth every penny thanks Terry!
