  • Amazing! Come visit our Brave Teddy Bear, Ryan, as he Strives to Become a Knight at Sarasota's Medieval Fair in Sarasota, Florida, U.S.A.

See: ryanlifeofryan(dot)com Arise!- Sir Ryan of Bear Haven! (Nov., 201

  • hah favorite song ever over one of my favorite sports ever. thanks SirCorby.

  • that was fun. Miss it.

  • Why can't you duck?

  • Wheeee, I spent the whole 4th of July this yr. watching the SCA on YouTube. Sure wish I was mobile again, so I could go more often.

  • haha...

    nice video!

I wish there was a way for me to participate in something like this in India but the idea itself is soo farfetched it saddens me :(

the closest I can get to this is to duel with semi-interested friends of mine with wooden swords that I made...

  • <3 the SCA. just got back from Potrero war :)

  • OMG very funny hope to see you guys at pensic 40

  • Your name is really familiar. Did you participate in Tarl's polearm tourney this year?

  • @flibbertygibbet Not this year. Several years in the past though. In 2009 I was 5th, I think. Sad that I took too long a break.

  • @SirCorby

I was one of the list girls. yay. Hopefully we will see you this year. It's a fun tournament. I am busy working on Prizes now.

  • hey if they knock you off balance on the shield, why not knock them over too =P

  • lol at #7

  • u know i lurned some of those the hard way thanks 2 my friend jesse aka Felix

  • Cool video and I'm also highly impressed with your MASTERFULL put-downs for the trolls! I've LARPed once in my life and even from that, I can testify that if foam weapons hurt, rattan must hurt a hell of a lot more, even with armour.

Just wish I could get involved in the SCA. Sadly, living in England, there's not many groups around. The closest's in Basingstoke... Dammit, why do Americans get all the coolest geek stuff? (Pretty sure that's an oxymoron, but still...)

  • @Archris17 'Cool' and 'geek' are synonyms.... :P

  • SCA in form they practice it in states is bullshit. Its sitting behind shield and sniping from there. light taps take you out. That you would not even feel in armoured combat. Really look videos from East Europe and Russia about medieval fighting in full speed with steel weapons and armour. WMA people guys that you can appriciete even in states. SCA in west is just silly stick playing.

  • @AlekseiGriffin I've seen some russian WMA or whatever. While I admire their bravery, toughness and power, I've yet to see anything that looked like more than flailing, grabbing people by the neck and throwing them down.

As for "light taps" I'll call bullshit. People get hurt when they get hit full speed on unarmored spots, and that's with a weapon that transfers an order of magnitude less force than the weird basket hilted machete looking things I saw in a recent video of a russian competition

  • @SirCorby

Hell, I did Kali, and you can get knocked the hell out when you've got a full suit of kendo armor and a suit of standard martial art stuff (padded helmets and gloves and stuff) under the kendo. And kali sticks are a lot smaller and lighter than the shit these guys have. Gonna agree with you here.

  • what song

  • I would agree w/rapace101, ducking seems to be a good SCA fighting tactic...the opponent swings his weapons, but misses, and leaves an opening for you to strike.

Is there something wrong with that???

  • 3:02 Beautiful!

  • Maybe I missed something, but at the "Don't duck, block" part, the "ducker" avoided the attack and got the other guy on the face as a counter. It looked pretty effective to me!

  • Hahaha. Thanks for sharing. *doesn't heavy fight, but it's still neat to watch* XD

  • Awesome

  • What's up with this "Block-Dont duck" -thing? I think the easiest "block" sometimes is to take a step back or to duck. A friend of mine is almost just working with sidestep or duck and he is a pretty damn good fighter.

P.S.: This should not be offensive, I just want to know the reason for this rule.

  • @Ketilbiorn Blocking requires less energy. Remember these people are wearing significant amounts of armor.

  • @SirCorby Hmm... If somebody wears plate armor yes. But in this case it just seems that they wear a gambeson and a surcoat with helmet and in a situation like this I would rather take a step back or duck to save the energy I would use in my arms when blocking. :-D

  • @Ketilbiorn They are NOT wearing "a gambeson and a surcoat with helmet". And I did not say "don't step back."

  • @SirCorby Alright...xD

  • wth is all this holding your arm above your head for 10 seconds standing inches apart..sorrt it just doesnt happen this way... you look silly wearing all this army than trying to 'bop' each other on the head.

also why do you have collapsable tables in the middle of your battlefield and low hanging lights above?

cool but weird...how do i get into this i want to beat you guys around..bring a bit of passion and intensity to the battlefield

  • @Emanusmell We are not re-enactors. Its just having fun and fighting. Not historical. It just has some appearance of it.

  • @Emanusmell thats wat full sized battles are for

  • @Emanusmell Trust me when I say there is quite a bit of 'passion and intensity' on the battlefield. In fact, I've seen people with so much 'passion and intensity' that they forget to go drink and faint dead away from dehydration.

If that sorta commitment isn't 'passion and intensity' I don't know what is. ^^

  • @Emanusmell Oh yes, please private message me for contact info. I'll put you in touch with people in your area who can teach you all sorts of things: Why we do what we do, How well we do it, and most importantly, humility.

  • @SirCorby I hope he found out his first impressions were off the mark :D SCA is great, but i'm yet to be certified :( Much harder than it looks!

  • @Emanusmell

Your funeral. They're called 'fights' for a reason.

  • @Emanusmell I know your comment is old but the 'bops' you see never really count as hits.

  • fighting in armor is difficult especially when there are rules! sword fighting is an art! one question can i kick? more specificly push kick?

  • @hamscum If you try to kick someone you are more likely to fall over or get beaten on the leg lol

  • @hamscum i wouldnt say so i can do a full back tuck in my armor so im sure someone could kick if they tried its just not allowed

  • Love The sport

  • Man, I'm only 16 and just started playing Amtgard, and I want to get into this so bad! Only problem would be my parents and where I can find a group near me =/

  • I went to one of these once and was told I shouldn't come back because I beat their 'house champion'... I was in borrowed house casual armor (except my own helm) and they kept saying I shouldn't use leverage and that I hit too hard. "You're not allowed to bump me!" and "Your shield isn't a weapon!" Yeah, well... I thought it was fun for about 2 hours...

  • @Raawrbert reading your comment it seems they didnt want you back not because you "beat their champion" but because you weren't playing by their rules.

  • that was awesome and hilarious. loved it. especially the dopnt rush in if hes really big part. fantastic.

  • Whats SCA mean?

  • @jordandraper11 Society for Creative Anachronism. It's a medieval recreation group made of win and a smidge of awesome.

  • do you have to pay to participate in SCA gatherings?

  • @ishouldplayzelda Events, yes, usually.... but it's not very much. Practices are always free, though.

  • Oh my god that was FUNNY! Awesome! This made my night. (I'm going to remain silent on whether or not I've done any of the bloopers...)

  • Are you guys using old european martial arts like hemac etc. ? Or is this a freestyle way of fighting ?

And in these sca fights are there even any rules ? Apart from safety ?

  • @Patrickthedutch For the most part, no. the fighting looks medieval"ish" but its a mix of many things and some purely SCA. The fighting has become sportlike and grew into its own thing. All in all, really damn fun though. there are rules but its all borne out of safety. Its not about re-enacting , its about having fun in a medieval like atmosphere.

  • I'm thinking about joining a SCA chapter near me and am trying to decide should I go with a Sword and Shield or should I go with a Voluge.

  • @SonOfCallaugh Most Kingdoms require you to start off sword and shield to get authorized. After that go with what you like. Each area is different so check into it. Has anyone contacted you in your area yet? If not. let me know and I will help.

  • On the "block don't duck" it looked like the man in red hit the man in checkers quite well across the head while avoiding being hit himself.

    Did I miss something?

I am confused as to why he should have blocked.

  • Sir Corby,

Just watched the video again. Good clean wholesome fun. Thank you.

To all the viewers, Try it out, it is huge fun. I think every person who suits up discovers that fighting an unwilling and actively resisting opponent is far more difficult than you imagined - and more fun too! Remember the lessons learned by MMA competitors, those combat arts which aren't being practiced with realistic training scenarios are not practical when faced by aggressive battle hardened opponents.

  • @WatofSarum Couldnt had said it better myself .

  • @malave31 Not quite. The guy in checkers jacked the guy who ducked with a return stroke.

  • so for one on ones. you don't have to wear the fancy getup right? can i just wear ma knickers with long socks, shoes, helmet, chain mail and shoes and be all set to wreck it up?

  • @smeigaldavis "Beat each other with sticks". Yup, thats pretty much what its about. Really fun. This isnt actual re-enactment. Its not a school for historical martial arts. Its a group of folks having fun.

  • love this vid reminds me of the big practices in the summer

  • is grappling allowed in sca?

  • No.

  • can i jion sca if i am chinese

  • yes you can though I've never been a member I have been to several functions and people of all backgrounds are members.

  • Yeesh....alot of bashing in the comments. SCA combat is fun. I'm so bored with people who look at anything other people are doing and go...."whatever is way more EXTREME! What your doing is lame cause I'm so EXTREME!".......chiiiill. 's fun...give it a shot you might like it.

  • Thanks for the video! I enjoyed it

  • *picking up the gauntlet* OK, let's do it!

  • WMA? Women's Motocross Association?? Why do you have to crack on this video? If your not into the SCA and are a fan of the serious WMA, what are you doing here cracking on others?

  • I was directed to look at this video by someone in the SCA, as an example of how serious you guys are. Blame them.

  • Really? Do serious WMA guys go full speed? And if you're right, why is it typical for serious SCA guys who are casual WMA people to do so well in WMA tourneys?

Enjoy your stuffy elitism about how real weapons enable greater technique, yadda yadda. You're ignoring the reality that full speed full contact practice has profound advantages TOO.

  • @SirCorby Well Corby I do a heavy boffer style and I fight with an S.C.A. group i find both styles fun . Heavy boff is brutal no armor heavy hitting sticks and S.C.A. rules . I Have a video on my channel of two guys making each other bleed ....lol

  • @SirCorby

Full speed and contact certainly does have importance, as does realistic/accurate technique and form. To answer your question, yes, WMA students certainly do both, at least in the school I attend. What we don't do is worry about politics, whose outfit looks better, what "title" we hold, etc.

The one SCA event I've seen had one recurring element - members whining about how their opponents hit too hard. I've been hit hard more than once. WMA students aren't known for whining.

  • @SirCorby check out scacommunity. com

  • Maybe not. Two entirely different games and techniques. I remember me and a bunch of guy in my platoon went to go play paintball tournament once. We got our asses handed to us by a bunch of 14yr old kids. Different rules, different technique. now have those kids fast rope on to a hot LZ and they would be smoked in seconds. Again. Different game different technique.

  • Reenactment tries to be historically correcht and SCA is just a combatgame.

  • Whats the major difference between reenactment and sca?

  • Reenactment have period correct armour and they reenact battles. They know who is going to win. SCA the Armour is pretty phoney for the most part but its really a sport. Its fun. Just not remotely accurate as far as history goes. Some strive for accuracy but for the most part, many dont. Its a sport and most wear hidden plastic under tunics as it helps one win.

The fights aren't scripted or based on historical data. No one knows who is going to win.

  • @JVRottweil Actually wearing plastic doesn't help you win. It's a honor-based contest, so the armor really is just there for protection and appearance. I used to have a set of Kydex™ leg armor that I stopped wearing because it worked too well.

OTOH, there are plenty of top heavy fighters who wear minimal armor because they can move faster.

  • man that long poleman got him good, i doubt it was intentional but it was a good counter nonetheless

  • Oh, believe me, that back cut was intentional. Thanks.

  • @skaboss3178 Definitely intentional. Poleaxes had large spikes on the opposite side from the hammer/axe head. Nasty weapon.

  • Forgive my ignorance, but why would you intentionally aim for the helmet? or a protected area. I really am not trying to be the martial art snob, but I don't know much about the Sca, and would like like to get some info from a member. I was going to ARMA way, but I want to try something a little different it looks fun, but already belonging to another group the do's and don'ts are obviously conflicting here. If some of you SCA guys or gals could give me a run down message me Ty.

  • In the SCA, in heavy fighting, a large part of the onus for calling a blow "good" falls on the opponent. Hence, if I just tap you one on the breast or skip over a bit of plate - you might not even notice.

If, however, I 'ring your bell' -- that is, hit your helmet hard enough to addle your melon, you *will* go down.

    Hope that helps.

  • Well a blunt tool vs armor works well, but an edged weapon can produce a very painful ringing effect, but ultimately is more damaging to your sword. So is the Sca a variant of a martial art?

  • Comment removed

  • You basically aim for w/e is open. If you leave the head shot, take it. Elbow, chest, take it. Can't swing a sword it you don't have the arm to swing it with right? The rattan, which is what the swords is made out of hits w/ enough energy that whether wearing armour or not, you still feel it. At that point it's on an honour system as to whether you take the shot as good or not.

  • do any of these actually learn how to use these weapons? i see little skill or technique.

  • Try watching the other person in the fight :)

  • That's why the video is funny. Lol. They're either novices, or having really a really bad day. xD

  • This is a fight practice. They are developing technique.

  • You give it a go moving in armor is harder than it looks. Trust me. A few mins in a great helm and coat of plates leaves you tired when trying to swing a big stick.

And that isnt bad technique bad technique is rushing in headlong. Swinging wildly. It aint perfect but no one is.

  • It takes quite a bit of conditioning for most people to get up to speed in SCA combat. I spent the first 8-12 months adapting to movement in the armor (my first real battle). :-) I've been a long distance runner for a long time and our fight practice used to feel about the same as running 10 miles.

  • i heard they all died later that night... HOW CAN SHE SLAP!!!1one

  • ive wondered what makes people a nerd if they like sword fights but not if they like airsoft? its essentially the same thing right? can i get some feedback?

  • its not realy nerdish for either nerdish is to live in your moms base ment and play world of warcraft all day

  • never bring a sword to a gun fight....

  • unless its a gunblade... XD

  • I practice kendo and have to say to all those haters that we eastern martial artists lol have just as many or if not more 'blooper' moments. Western martial arts deserves the same amount of respect as eastern martial arts.

  • Wow, his name alludes to fire and he acknowledges Western martial arts... two thumbs up!

  • iam going to buy a spangenhelm it says its SCA combat tested can some one tell me what SCA is all about i know thats its real fighting but can some one explain it with more depth

  • Thanks for the tips ^.- but why cant you duck? It seems like it worked well in the video :)

  • @Alien

You're exagerating ;) It's not that bad. And actually bigger part of the armies at that time were peasants forced to war duties, they weren't masters at all, they just swang and pushed their weapons around, hoping to hit without getting hit... This also goes for many of the lesser nobles. They may have had some training, but most of the time they were still peasants and not skilled in weapons' use.

  • Its called having two jobs. A sensible lord didnt just round up all the peasants who on average had more muscle than anyone today because of their constant physical labor to go fight wars, they were trained so they wouldn't be useless sword fodder. Peasant militias weren't something to sneer at. The only reason anyone thinks peasants are untrained and hopeless is hollywood. It's not like nobles didn't have dedicated soldiers either. Hundreds of years of fighting and no one made a system?

  • no.... they didn't make a system as in a fudel society arming your peasants was the height of stupidity. That being said the levies were trained...somewhat, nothing close to what a knight had. There were small bodies of professional soldiers.

AND, peasants did not have more muscle then people today because they had a poor diet.

  • Levies had their uses, especially as missile troops, descriptions of medieval battles give almost all credit to the knights, but the the knights and upper class wrote the history and more often then not did not give the levies the credit they deserved for breaking up spear walls with their crossbows, allowing for a cavalry charge. As horses WILL not charge a row of spears....they are not dub animals.

  • The Japanese and Okinawan peasants were go at fighting with there weapons, they didnt just swing randomly. I belive the Europeans were the same way right? They must have practiced at least alittle bit, shared techniques and stuff... My dad told me that alot of peasants practiced shooting bows to fight in the wars, not so much as close combat

  • Keep in mind the hollywood version of medival warfare is totally different than reality, they fought with what htey had, slings were extremely popular as well ammo was plentyfull, actual armor of any signicance was something only the rich could afford. Peasants faught with anything they could get ahold of.

Greeks were somewhat different, with farmers also going on campaigns, being fairly well armed and trained, something most peasants of europe never recieved.

  • Scottish weapons Claymore and Baskethilt ^^ =) I like it

  • 50 million touchy people are going to get on here and bash me and call me names, but honestly, from what i've seen SCA guys have no clue what they are doing in combat. in truth t doesn't matter because they are wonderful at every thing else. as a martial artist for 17 years, i just believe ARMA guys are better at fighting. i lost interest in the sca after going there and seeing the unskilled slug it with no coordination. these men were masters of combat, not brutal oafs swinging aimlessly

  • but isnt swinging aimlessly so much fun

  • There are oafs in every art. You do not see aimless swinging in this video, and this is a BLOOPER reel. I also note that when moderately skilled SCA guys go and play in other WMA stuff, they usually rise to the top of the competition pretty quickly. Full speed training has its powerful benefits.

  • @AlienZygote010 Please do come by and enlighten us! I'll show you my technique if you show me yours.

  • @SirCorby - It would be interesting to see who comes out on top with us duking it out. you with a long sword and me with a dadao. alas, when i have seen sca guys fight they simply touched shields and swung head, knee, head, knee, head, knee. it was like the old comic Andy Capp when he and his wife would fight it was like a cloud of fists and feet. arma guys, use real technique. this is just what i have witnessed. i am sure there are beginners and experts in both camps. maybe i only saw noobs

  • @SirCorby I study Italian longsword, and don't do SCA heavy combat. What the SCA guys do may not be 'historical', but I have seen some SCA guys with real skill, and they have more than once given a good spanking to overconfident martial artists from other traditions, Getting past that damned shield is a bitch!

  • the problem with ducking is that you take your eyes away from your opponent, some fighters have gotten good at staying focused throughg a duck, but most have trouble doing so.

I love the one where they fall, i've seen that happen in a battle, it was a big guy that took down 3 others, two with his body and one with his polearm, by accident of course.

  • Cool, I Want to Play.

  • Why couldn't you duck? Looked like a good move to me.

  • Did you not see what happend after... I dont know much about this style of sword fighting, but im going to assume the people that actually do it know what they are talking about. I do more the Katana Samurai fighting and the duck would have turned into something like grabbing his leg and tipping him over, then it become a jujutsu match (grappling) But land a takedown to a guy in full armor, and hes pretty much done, thats alot of weight lol

  • music is awfull...it doesn't belong to medieval times

  • You don't understand. Its like the "failed sketches" at the end of comedy movie. Music should not belong to medieval times. It should belong to funny or stupid maneuvers and it does! Besides does every movie with "medieval" tag should unoriginally have historic music?

  • @KrapikMastah well,if so, it's ok :))

but, if "Ivanhoe", "Robin Hood" or any "medieval movie" has modern-music of any kind soundtrack it sucks!! it's like having sword in one hand and cell phone in the other...don't you agree?

  • "it's like having sword in one hand and cell phone in the other"

Or like Nike shoes, or electrical lighting... There is no reason for their to not be modern music, though like any movie the music needs to be appropriate to the feel of the time. You don't want a romantic, or light-hearted scene ruined with heavy metal... Other than that, I see no reason to restrict it.

  • @LepiMario but imagine "300" with an ancient greek music... OH GAWD i did it right now ZOMFG ROTFL LMAO xD

  • I can't tell you how many times I have watched this video. Screw all the haters, nice video!

  • I love when these fights escalate into real battles when someone gets pissed off. Once me and a friend were playing around with hockey sticks and it got really intense.

anyway, the pole-man hit was my fav part (3:00) so funny 5/5

  • there is nothing wrong with ducking!!! i've seen it done and the ducker came up and hit the other guy in the side of the head!!

  • Nice hit from the poleman

  • Yeah cause you know that bjj, MMA, boxing, Muy Tai and all those other sports with rules are for whimps. You should get out there stand in a circle and hit each other with rocks like real men.

  • LOL!!!

  • The poleman bit was great. Evaded and countered well.

  • i love this video because of the music you chose

  • yeah you tell them. i bet youre a balck belt master sword fighting technician mangod devildog fighter guy.... you should challenge one of them to a duel. that would be awesome!!!!! let me know when it happens because i want to be there to see the CARNAGE!!!!!!!!

  • Naw...he's right. They're good at SCA "combat". It's not sword-fighting by a long shot. Rattan just doesn't react like steel does, plus many of the historical fechtbuch techniques are not allowed to be used in the SCA. Furthermore, SCA combat assumes armor, yet allows a point to be scored that would in reality never penetrate said armor. I've done SCA combat for about seven years and dabbled in "sword fighting" for about half that time.

  • your suppose to assume the hit can penetrate chainmail nothing more.

  • ok mate, lol the fighting you see in the movies, yeah it sgreat looking right? and its based (alot of it atleast) on real fighting techniques... but a good percetage of medieval combat mostly involved bashing the opponents brains out with mainstrength. not pretty. but pretty effective... although yeah, this isnt real combat, so its not the same, but its still really fun!

  • If you look closely at the remaining information, it is clear that the knights and professional soldiers of the medieval period were in fact professional and skilled. Their traditions have mostly been lost, but that's part of what we are rediscovering. Manuals like I.33 for sword and buckler, or Joie de Hache for poleaxe work show there were systems for fighting in the west, in armor. Not just bashing with main strength.

  • HA! Can't wait to try to avoid each and evrey one of these things! "Conditioning" indeed!

  • richtig schlecht

  • ohja... das ist doch nciht so schwer wenigstens blocken zu üben.. rennen alle in dicker rüssi rum können aber nicht mit ihrer waffe umgehen

  • hey nice vid. who sings the song by the way my wife loves it. lol!

  • The song is 'Where is my mind?' by the Pixies

  • Very amusing, but as a smaller fighter (well, mid-sized--I'm only 6' after all...) I have to dispute one of your suggestions. BY ALL MEANS, get in close to the big fighters! If you don't, they'll ding you before you can touch them! *grumbles*

  • Деревянные мечи! Фигня!

  • Спик он инглишь ит))))

    Иначе не поймут))

  • Well done Milord! Great video!

  • this is something i just heard about while looking at some stage gear lol, wow, i want to try it

  • I agree with Christian...Get a lanyard or go play outside!

  • Hi guys, you are using plastic swords?

  • rattan covered in duct tape

  • strange but, why not it is quite safe

  • thats more the point of SCA

  • 3 of my cousins and their parents used to do SCA

I got to watch them practis at home it was fun to watch

  • where do you get the handle guard thingies ont the greatswords?

  • you either make them yourself not hard to do or you get someone else to do it or you ebay things but careful as different rules apply in different kingdoms never buy a helmet unless you know all the specks and guage and stuff

  • up in weldsmere we never really see great swords, or two handed swords.

its really cool to see some heavys with it

  • Sweet!

  • Just a p.s. we here in An tir and more particularly in the Barony of Aqua Terra are going to be hosting a four day event called the Art of War. Many teachers (some from Caid and the West Kingdom)and much learning. Look to your kingdom information for all the details....bring your armor and bed roll. We do the cooking . Hot showers and cabins for rest. Huzzah!

  • I love this. I'm in An Tir and love to see how the rest of the known world plays!!!!

  • FYI, two of those guys are from An Tir. See the 'Don't forget to bend the knees' portion? I know both of the fighters. One happens to live in Stromgard about a mile and a half from me.

  • The guy in the white belt is Duke Amalric, yes now of An Tir. He lived in Atlantia for quite a while. The other is Aethelwolf, and I'm sure he has never been in An Tir for any reasonable amount of time.

  • I'm glad no one has done this at my local practice, I would be in every "what not to do" frame. I can't help that I block with my head instead of the buckler. The buckler costs more, I need to keep it looking good.

  • dude how do u join these things?

im 15 and mexican is that ok?
