I watched this movie and as a PhD in biochemistry I can say that the information in the video just covers partial facts!! The movie focuses mainly effects of processed food/meats on cancer, heart disease, diabetes but the list is not limited to above three and huge. Vegetarians on a whole grain diet have lower incidences of kidney stones, better muscle recovery after workouts, better immunity (better free radical scavenging) and it is good for the environment
LMAO over all the arm chair "experts" on this thread. I, for one, am too smart to waste my time trying to educate these brainwashed, mouth-breathers, who clearly have no critical thinking skills. Go ahead and keep eating the S.A.D. diet and see what happens.
I love radicalized videos like this: it shows ONE 1/3 second slip of a man jogging- which is more telling of the video than of what it's trying to sell.
Moderation and active lifestyles- by far- is what divides the western world from the rest of the world. Not nonsense diets like veganism and vegetarianism.
@Alaska47Boy I don't think that's exactly what the movie is trying to convey. But I may be wrong. But it seems to me that it is trying to promote that moderated lifestyle that you suggest... though i would say that a vegetarian diet would not be a bad idea for someone to pursue. There is no way a vegetarian can suffer from malnutrition if they go about it the correct way.
@Aryacalanatha - From the sound bites and highlight reel from the "preview," there's no talk of moderation, whatsoever- it explicitly points to two things: prescription meds and very specific diet components: meat. There is no mention of exercise or active lifestyles in the preview, there is no mention of any other aspect which has ben shown to key physiological wellbeing - none. The only thing it makes mention of here is that a vegetarian lifestyle trumps all in getting there, which is slant.
I was disappointed with this movie. I was hoping for a balanced view on how real, natural food can be your medicine, and it does have that as it's underlying theme. However, it is really more a propaganda film for the vegan lifestyle. It is extremely biased and uses skewed and/or weak science to support that view.
@fmby this film is based on scientific data from the most respected doctors and institutions on the planet. Maybe you just know more than than they do....Sounds like you are the one with the agenda. Please tell us, what are your qualifications?
@Plushcat143 No, no it's not. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is not even considered a legitimate scientific institution. Don't believe me? Go join it. ANYONE can. Then try to join the Institute of Medicine. You can't, only around 60 medical professionals are permitted per year, and only by election. The American Medical Association is no fan of PCRM, and it's even listed in quackwatch as 'questionable'. It is an animal rights group, not a legitimate scientific institution.
@fmbyAnd that's not to say that there's anything wrong with legitimate animal welfare groups, either. My comment was not to provoke a vegetarian/meat eater debate, it was merely a call to sound science, that's all. I'm well aware that BOTH sides can be guilty of abusing science. To answer your question, my agenda is that proper scientific procedures be followed and unbiased conclusions be drawn from them. That was my qualm with this movie.
@Plushcat143 - This is a mock-umentary. A real documentary shows balance and multiple sides to show a lear picture. "Respected Doctors" are used how and
when the creators and those funding this film want to. There is a clear
agenda here, and 'fmby' is 100% correct. Those open-mouthed blinds
who nod their heads up and down while watching this probably also think
Michael Moore makes documentaries, and if you're not taking this with an
@Alaska47Boy I could never believe that someone could read that entire book and speak like this. You reveal yourself to obviously have a clear, bias by using terms "kool-aid drinkers" and "tin foil hat wearers" without speaking factually. Why are you so closed to considering the idea that a primarily plant-based, whole grain diet can have a dramatic effect towards reversing disease? I work in the nutrition field and there is almost universal agreement on this principal.
@fmby you actually stated that it was "more of propaganda film for the vegan lifestyle" Are you fucking insane?!?!?!?! The most expansive and downright biggest medical study ever conducted on Earth, by two doctors who are highly respected & educated. Cambell has an MS and PhD from Cornell in biochemistry, nutrition, and microbiology while Esselstyn has undrgd from Yale & an MD from Western Reserve!!! WHERE IS YOUR DOCTORATE!? Also, AMA dislikes PCRM only cause it fucks with busines as Usual!
@MrChewymentos No, I'm not insane. Although, if you talk like you type, I'm guessing that you may be teetering on the edge yourself. Perhaps lay off the weed you're so fond of. And I don't have a doctorate, what difference does that make? A PhD does not make someone infallible or unbiased. Robert Atkins had his doctorate. Does that mean his diet plan is unassailable? And if you put down the bong and remote and look into the study, or rather Campbell's analysis of it, you'd know that it was...
@MrChewymentos ..absolutely riddled with problems- and many scientists (with PhDs) have torn it in apart in the scientific community.
I actually have great respect for both Campbell and Esselstyn. They both seem like genuinely nice people and I certainly back their cause of trying to make people healthy through food. As I said before, I just want proper science to be used, that's all. The conclusions drawn in this movie were from a very biased point of view. That is extremely evident.
@Aryacalanatha I think the two million members of PETA, and other animal rights activists worldwide, would disagree with you that there is nothing to be gained from persuading people to go vegetarian- which would stop millions of animals from being killed for food. It's preposterous that you could not deduce that for yourself.
@Alaska47Boy Thank you, at least one person is not jumping down my throat. The crazy part is that I'm not even telling people to go eat a hamburger, spewing disparaging comments about vegetarians, or anything else. Be a vegan, I really don't care. I was just pointing out, which I thought was blatantly clear, that this is a one sided movie with an agenda that uses poor science. That's all.
@fmby I appreciate your willingness to comment on here and take a rational approach. That's what these discussions need. Of course the movie is incomplete in a sense because it's a movie and not a book or research study but to say that it has an agenda that uses "poor science" shows a lack of understanding. Challenge yourself to explore the facts and read "The China Study." It's the most thorough epidemiological study of it's kind.
@TheGeetarDog Why must a film necessarily be incomplete? It can, and should, be just as factual and balanced as any book. I understand just fine. Why, when discussing the diet changes imposed on Norway in WWII did the film not mention the other changes in their diet then? Changes like the decrease in sugar, increase in vegetables, and dramatic increase in fish consumption. Because fish is an animal, and including that information would not have fit with the very biased slant this movie takes.
Education about this is ongoing for me. I have friends who have been trained in the modern western medicinal field, and what seems to be lacking for the general public (esp. modern medicine physicians in training) are an abundance of sound studies, results, and progress that can easily be integrated with modern mainstream medicine. And should be. If the natural health communities stepped up the amount of results that are found for other modern medicinal treatments, nations could move forward.
Staying in your dietary 'comfort zone' where people downplay everything, is only going to keep your doctors wealthy and meat subsidies nice and high like it is now. Want to know the price of a steak without government subsidies??? $35 dollars a pound. Thats why a small bag of almonds or walnuts is like $8 while the meat is cheap as hell. Makes me ill.
If everyone ate what makes pleases them, then every1 would eat dairy.. Because its addictive since its meant for a baby calf like all mammal's milk. When people are veg and say ..oh its no big deal, or its everyones choice to do what they want bs its kind of upsetting and revolting. Its like saying abusing your dog is horrible , but its your choice, do what you want. Its your choice to commit heinous acts, but once youre aware of what happens to your 'meat' its your obligation to do whats right.
come on citizens, eat more meat, preferably from cloned cows, and eat more monsanto food, take more aspartame sugar free foods and eat more pills ... pills my friends, pop those pills ... feed feed fellow citizens ... buahahahaha
People that are disagreeing with this documentary didn't watch it or didn't read the journals and science that went into the findings about meat and dairy in a person's diet. And it's unfortunate. This is real, and in time, more will see and realize that a plant based diet is the original design.
@eabmusic1 No actually it is the other way around. The people who disagree with this mockumentary did their homework and that's why they can tell cult chanting from actual science.
The USA has become the armpit of the world. No compassion, no responsibility for actions, greedy, lying and full of an overweight diabetic population riddled with cancer. We feed our people toxic foods while lobbyists rally and politicians spew forth lies. What do you expect from a country where the average IQ is 87. You have been had people. The joke is on you. Grown your own food if you cant do that……..Enjoy your chemo while your insurance company drops you for a pre-existing condition.
Yes, plant foods are very important to our diets. But I see nothing about the ruination of our plant/crops in this country that are genetically manipulated. This is a major threat to ALL organic foods, and a threat to natural healing through foods. GMO's are untested in humans and animals, but yet our FDA and USDA deems them as equivalent to conventional crops. I believe they are not, and independent studies are proving they are not safe, but we eat them unknowingly almost every day.
@TheJdressler Excellent point. Obama just passed some corn thing helping the big Ag industries at our expense. I just don't remember what the bill was called. Sometimes it seems like we're all kinda screwed.
@lovebigboobs29 yes you realy consuming meat and animal products for centuries, and thats why you are still dying from it tha once that are brainashed are others that are blid to see this point of view there is no pill that will god damn help you cure something.
dont be lazy do somethink for your health here is the information you need and you still cant even see it. DID YOU ACTUALY watch the whole movie?
@superangrybrit tasty and nutritious lol !!! if tasty and nutritious.dont cook it,,,dont put it salt on it...or any other sauce or seasons...MMM TASTY!!!...maybe for a lion
@lovebigboobs29 Man I'm not even a vegan and you are a retarded idiot . please don't use your ignorance to defend meat consumers you are clearly a bad example of us.
All these people have diabetes because they eat total crap. All the junk food that they eat will eventually over throw their metabolism especially if they don't exercise. I'm a big fan of local farming and all organic food. Not all Vegan food is good for u especially when fried. When it comes down to it u r better off cooking your own food at home. Plus I could never give up organic dairy! Dairy is the best source for calcium. What about Honey? Honey is by far one of the best things u can eat.
@lovebigboobs29 Milk isn't the best source of calcium when you look at the downsides of consuming it. Leafy vegetables are a better source of calcium considering the other benefits they have. Dumbass.
@79ddb1 Actually Honey isn't... coming from someone who absolutely loves honey, apart from a few benefits such as introduction of allergins (specifically in consuming local honey) to build immunitity in your body, honey causes the same spike in blood sugar levels which can lead to health difficulties just like table sugar. As my nutritional professor said , "sugar is sugar is sugar".
@SeedofLucifer666 - How happy will you be when you are living with diebetes and taking several pills a day (many of which to deal with the side effects from other pills?). Education and information like this film get correct information out there to inform people, the results of their actions. Essentially you are giving up short term satisfaction for long term health and happiness. Would you rather be happy your whole life or just RIGHT NOW scarfing down your 10oz steak. Watch the documentary.
I see in the comments posted, that there were no obese people in the paleolithic, eating large(?) portions of meat tht gave us "big brains." We were hunter gathers, I am sure the majority of you have some idea of men going out every day and catching large portions of meat everyday. In actuallity meat was a rarity, and not the staple in many prehistoric diets. Per calorie our species used to get the bulk of their nutirition from gathered foods. i.e natural vegitables, nuts, fruit, grains. (Vegan)
@Jes4564 but the sad thing is that the only way anyone usually knows about these things is if they've taken a college course such as anth or nutrition. The poor fools who choose not to go end up dying slow, painful early deaths of heart disease or cancer.
@SeedofLucifer666 Did you know that Toxins we loaded with and exposed to every day in Air, Water, Food don't all flsuh thru our body? They gravatate and store in FAT cells/ tissue. The more Fat,The more room you have to store toxins & Toxins/chemicals cause the body to store more too. It's a terrible cycle. Fat puts burden on the body. Our bones and muscles were not designed to have extra weight on them. It was designed to work hard and regular cardio and resistance xercise
This film and most of the top comments show a lot of understanding about the issue of obesity and its causes. Obesity is definitely the most important health threat to humans not only due to its own health consequences, but also because it is the cause of other dangerous health problems. But may I introduce the problem which we'll all be talking about perhaps 20 years from now: Disease caused by genetically engineered food. Some one needs to produce a film about it NOW, not in 20 years.
I tried posting a reply to the top comments mostly because they are grossly over simplified. They are in-fact rather dumb downed responses. Watch the movie learn from it and be content. Disinformation has no VALUE!
i.e. Inform yourself first before spitting out nonsence.
It's the sedentary lifestyle that is killing America. It's not especially the food we eat (although in many ways, America's diet is atrocious) that is giving people type 2 diabetes or hypertension and heart disease, it's the lack of exercise. America needs to learn that without exercise our world will grind to a halt.
I posit that it's wheat and sugar, and not so much meat. I eat meat (not commercial) and fish, plenty of vegetables, & nuts, seeds, berries, raw milk cheese, few grains (quinoa, millet) and little fruit/sugar, and I am in excellent health. I eat no wheat/gluten,& I feel great since I've gone off wheat (also lost 9 pounds and I'm down to 128 at 48!). Read "Wheat Belly" - it's insulin resistance that's causing ill health due to the extent of the consumption and the genetic modification of wheat.
It is the government's fault for allowing corporations to use "growth hormones" in your poultry, cattle in which it's passing those hormones when you consume such, also the use of pesticides that are harmful to humans in one way or the other on plants.
There will never be a day that this stops, the U.S. government is locked in by allowing the use of those chemicals that the food corporations need in order to keep up with the demand and competition. The lobbyist pay congress.
It is NOT simple for the majority of Americans to eat a primarily fruit and vegetable diet. For many low-income areas of the US, McDonalds or whatever lard bucket fast food joint down the block sells food much cheaper and with less hassle. If you're living in poverty and spending most of your paycheck on rent and day to day items, spending even more on fresh vegetables that will go bad in three days is simply not an option.
Being vegan and a VERY active person, when people ask me if I feel vegans/vegetarians are healthier, I say 99% the time they are. I mention that it's not necessarily b/c a plant based diet itself is healthier (most of my athletic friends are meat eaters), but when you are veg, it forces you to better examine, which leads to healthier eating habits
Also, most vegans are well aware the world's not gonna go veg, but we all agree the amount of animal products being consumed does need to DECREASE
How many here think eating meat will reverse heart disease ? How many here are clueless about the difference between complex and simple carbs ? How many here use a 3,000 lb car instead of a bike to move their lazy fat butt to the local store to pickup processed crap from the supermarket to feed your arteries ?
Meat does'nt make people fat and unhealthy. Unbalanced diets do. I'd agree with arguments against most dairy. Milk doesn't do anything for the body that vegetables don't do better, infact it comes with so much lactose that it contributes to gaining weight. Carbs and sugars make us fat, we know this already. Too much meat of anything is not healthy. Refined carbs doesn't just mean chocolate bars and sodas.. it means breads, cereal, pastas, things that people still think are healthy nowadays
With the radiation leaking out especially in Japan right now, there will probably be worse than heart disease in otherwise healthy parts of the world! Why take medicine when we keep making ourselves sick? It's time to get smart and demand an end to all the greedy are doing to kill our earth and all who live upon her!
As a vegan who uses his diet partly as medicine, I agree with a lot of what this documentary is arguing. But I don't think it's necessary to go vegan or even that animal protein is necessarily to blame for bad health; it's the extent to which our society eats meat and dairy, and the poor quality that results from an industrialized meat industry. A plant-based diet is only "better" because it forces you to go out and diversify your diet. Eat whatever makes your body feel good.
Toniosg92, I like your open minded perspective, but it's not meat and fat that make people sick and fat. It's sugar, corn syrup, grains and processed vegetables oils that make people sick and fat.
We've been eating large amounts of meat for 2.6 million years. It's because of fatty meat and hunting that we have the largest brains on Earth, compared to our body size.
Sugar forces your body to secrete insulin, which turns sugar into triglycerides/body fat. This has been known since 1965.
Meat IS a major contributing factor to obesity. And history of consumption is not a justification for consumption. Heart disease and cancer are two of our biggest killers here in the U.S. and both are strongly correlated with meat and dairy consumption. Just the other day a study was released linking processed meat with pancreatic cancer, corroborating a previous study linking red meat to pancreatic cancer. And these are just two examples of scores of studies.
@SophistAssassin meat does not cause obesity. Of course if you are eating a certain type of meat and not exercising and eating other unhealthy stuff yes but I guarantee you that there was not one person obese in the paleolithic years and all they ate was meat and natural foods. Its all in how much you eat and the lack of exercise. Meat has nothing to do with it
@PAKETEMON I like everything cooked. I can eat my food any way I want to. It can be digested raw but I like it cooked and I like vegetables cooked as sides. But yes its in our nature to eat meat or we wouldn't eat it. Nice try tho.
@mgallier1 I agree. I was reading about some eskimos that eat an all-meat diet - no carbohydrates or anything, and they're healthy. Meat isn't the problem.
The hypothesis that meat consumption led to brain growth is far from an established fact. Correlation does not equal causation. Many of our ancestors were herbivores. The human brain is composed mainly of fatty tissue.
All carbohydrates (sugars) are converted to glucose. Simple sugars are absorbed too fast. Fiber from fruits and veggies slows down digestion to slow the blood sugar spike. Vegan diets have been shown to be the best at reversing type 2 diabetes.
@AppleSouffle1 Are you talking about white, raw, brown sugar or any of these? As regards meat I would have thought that the growth hormones, antibiotics and organoarsenicals added to the feed of cattle, poultry and swine would be what are causing the health issues in people and pose real risks to their health if they choose to eat the flesh of these animals. Just saying.
@knowthetruth1492 I would totally support your pedophiliac cannibalism, but unfortunately I have no children. Go ask the Arawaks if they have any extra.
These guys got it wrong. It's carbs not protein that are the problems. How do they explain the Inuits? Very high protein diet with no fruit/veges and they experienced none of the western diseases until 60 years ago they started eating the western diet full of glucose + fructose. High meat/protein eaters in Utah have the same low numbers of colorectal cancers that vegetarians have. Vegetarians diet is low bad carbs too. The French paradox = less sugar. Mediterranean + Jap diets= sugarless.
Carbs are not the problem, not consuming enough carbs puts the body into ketosis, breaks down muscle tissue, causes bad breath, and can cause depression. Inuits also regularly consumed grasses, tubers, roots, stems, berries, fireweed and seaweed and preserved them season to season. I also found no proof of your claim about Utah other than an outdated study done in 1988 on a small population.
@LegendxWind Ketosis to a certain degree is not harmful, and I never heard anything about it breaking down muscle tissue. Carbs in general are not the culprit, but our reliance on refined carbs are in my opinion the culprit. Asian diets don't eat anywhere NEAR the amounts of refined carbs and sugars that we eat in the west. Most of their diets consist of meats and vegetables with rice being the closest thing to a refined carb in site. Protein doesn't cause diabetes. Refined carbs do.
@glenm99 I don't think they are making it up at all - you only need to look at the Chinese etc. the facts are obvious. People just don't want to face up to facts - the western diet is killing us all very quickly. And @defergerth - there is more than enough protein in plant based foods for the human body. We eat too much protein. A good start for most people who can't face giving up the meat is to at least to stop eating the processed meat garbage, beef and pork are the worst.
@defergerth Do some research and tell me any food where you don't get any protein from (except water of course). You'll see: protein is in everything! Eat your beans, eat your lentils, eat your veggies, have some brown rice or whole wheat noodles and you're good to go. Add some nuts and seeds if you want to boost your protein intake (that's what I do) and it's all good. Plant-based eating is by far easier than most people think :-)
so some cancers were turned on by meat in the documentary but im assuming that the actual meat they were eating was cooked. just like in the idea of eating "RAW" vegetables and fruit if you cook it or process it you loose the majority of its benefits & vitamins. could the same idea be behind actual meat? cooked meat could cause cancers but could we be losing cancer stopping benefits if we cook meat? i know some cultures actually eat their meat raw with hot sauces and spices. any thoughts?
@OZZYSCRACKMEUP the only problem with that is most humans have lost their ability to digest raw meat, those cultures you talk about are probably the only people capable of eating raw meat without having diarrhea afterwards
@51909relapseminem good point. i was just watching an episode of bizzare foods in africa somewhere and just had an idea. i still follow the whole foods diet but i would like this to be further researched or if anyone knows anything more please do share. i was thinking that alot of people like myself before had eatin steaks almost raw and curious to the like of cook meat and raw meat.
I just find when I excercise I feel energized. If I go even a day without doing some activity I feel like crap. As for diet, I stay clear away from fast food and junk food however, the harder I exercise the more I crave milk/chicken/turkey/deer. I use to limit my intake on these foods(mainly for no interest or craving), but my body just needed it.
Someday the odor and consumption of our current form of high fat junk food will be looked down upon as cigarette smoking is today in places like California.
@benthead did you know that in Sacramento, they are forbidding fast food joints from selling toys with happy meals/big kids meal unless they meet the necessary requirements for a healthy serving of food?
Love being VEGAN.!! try it, don't listen to what other meat eaters tell you.. just try it and see how you feel.!!(what do you have to loose?) make the judgement for yourself.!! you'll see..
Diet and lifestyle is EVERYTHING! I changed my eating habits a year ago and cut our flour, sugar and grains and feel GREAT. I am 52 and menopausal. I lost 46 lbs, and no more pain in my joints, fatigue, or depression bouts. And NO MEDS, they cause a lot of these problems!
@thunderinthevalley Which cancers, exactly? Can you cite a cancer study for me that gives a quantitative value for dietary causation of any type of cancer?
Saying diseases have "possible links to diet" is a far cry from the claim made in the video that a wide variety of diseases are caused ENTIRELY by diet (especially since many of those diseases have proven genetic components). So no, they don't have a point... they're just making stuff up.
They are. Hotdogs and bacon as well as red meat have been proven to increase your risk of cancer, specifically heart and colon. You're the only one trivializing these issues because you don't want to accept the truth.

I don't agree with cutting out meat. But definitely agree with eating real organic foods and living an active lifestyle. Processed foods and laziness has made this country unhealthy. Don't agree with modern medication either.
Omnivores need to stop being so defensive. Even cutting out meat for 1 day a week (e.g. Meatless Mondays) makes a big difference. Every bit helps. No one is forcing you to give up meat. Both my parents have high blood pressure and they live on medication. I don't want to end up like that so I cut out meat.
cont. from previous post...or Bernando La Pallo, 109 (and looks like in his 70s), who eats mostly raw fruits, vegetables, raw fish too.
I'm certainly not bashing vegans here, like I said I eat mostly this way too, but to never eat animal food I don't think works in the long run, especially if you're athletic (I run too and can't seem to do as well if only vegan for long term).
@distantstarrr You may be low in other nutrients such as a multi B or essential fatty acids which both are needed for long term stamina, if you run you must google Indian man 100 runs London Marathon, this elderly east Indian gentleman just ran the recent
London Marathon, and he is 100% vegetarian, he also said he drinks lots of ginger tea,
he looks fanatastic, he donates all his proceeds advertising to charities.
@outdoorenthusiastBC thank you, but yes, I do know of Fauja Singh and he occasionally eats a small amount of dairy...he didn't say how much, but I eat about 1 to 2 cups of nonfat/lowfat yogurt just 2 times a month, that's all, not daily. Sometimes I eat free range organic eggs instead, or even more rarely, some fish although I'm really trying to stay away from fish for good. I take multis, B complex, and C sometimes too, yet I still just seem to need some animal food.
cont. from previous post...consider Mimi Kirk, a 72 yr. old raw food vegan, who eats nuts too, and she looks like she's 40 (I think the Campbell's are in their upper 70s, but look older). For those who know macrobiotic-based facial diagnosis, Dr. Campbell is very sanpaku, not good. And another oldster who looks amazing for his age is 100 yr. old Fauja Singh marathon runner, a vegetarian who eats lots of lentils and some dairy occasionally (and who obviously has no heart problems!).
I've been mostly vegan for many years. I watched this movie yesterday and was quite frankly shocked at the appearance of Campbell, Campbell's wife, McDougal, and some of the other low fat practicing vegans. They look terrible for their age! I was expecting far younger-looking! My reasoning? I eat some organic dairy occasionally (about twice a month), and I eat higher protein (from soy products), and nuts too, and mostly raw. Maybe very low fat/low protein and no animal food ever is too extreme.
I haven't had any red meat, pork, or chicken in almost a year.. I want to go vegan completely, but I am not in the right place for that right now. Hopefully I will get there soon. :)
Simple. Feed participants meat. Record what happens with their health. Feed control participants no meat. Record what happens with their health. Compare the results of the two groups. Studies have been extremely consistent in their findings for decades, but you don't hear them in the media because meat and dairy have the money. The results have been replicated independently over and over. The result is that meat consumption (and dairy/fish as well) leads to poor health.
@SophistAssassin It's not that simple. If you eat only meat, bad health arises, no argument there. Eating only vegetables, the same happens. Admittedly I don't have FIRST hand experience with being vegan, I like my meat. But I have had vegan friends that are constantly weak and sick because they live a very active and athletic life-style and don't get enough protein to support their body. There is NO room for processed food and I adamantly insist on organic, free-range meats, in moderation.
All essential protein amino acids can be obtained through vegan sources. Your vegan friends must not have known what they were doing. Mixing rice and beans makes a complete protein amino acid profile. Both soy and quinoa are complete proteins, and hemp provides all essential amino acids, albeit a couple amino acids are in lower than optimal quantities (fine if you consume more). Hemp is easily digested. Tempeh is a fermented version of soy that makes it even easier to digest.
Cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys and fish are consumers, not producers. Everything they contain they obtained through diet. That includes Omega-3 fatty acids. Two of the best sources are walnuts and flax seeds in ALA form. DHA (the preferred form) is passed up the food chain through algae. As such, algal oil DHA Omega-3 capsules are available and free of contaminants unlike fish oil.
Go to JAMA's website and type "meat" into the search for a glimpse into peer reviewed literature
Come on people! You don´t have to stop to eat good stuff and unhealth! Eat much less! Try to eat that green stuff from those hippies with some meat and some potatos(mashed, fried , roasted )or something else, but delicious. trust me, you will enjoy.
@chakalaka80: What is WRONG with you? Look at what you're saying: "You don´t have to stop to eat good stuff and unhealth!" So only meat and dairy is good?? I began eating more Legumes recently and I LOVE the taste. Ask yourself these questions. Have you ever known an obese Vegan? Have you ever known a Vegan with obesity related health issues? Use SOME common sense and logic here. The Western diet consists primarily of animal products, and it's affecting our quality of living.
Organic foods should be available to everyone. As it is, only the filthy rich can afford to eat 100% organic. If I was president, there would be government subsidies only for the more organic farms, and the less natural a food is, the higher I would tax it. I would have a 400% tax on meat.
Just wondering about people who's diet is culturally low in vegetables - for example nomadic Mongolians. If they eat primarily milk products and meat, is there any data showing increased heart disease etc.? Anybody know anything about that?
Eating this way is a choice. The neat thing about this movie is that it is given a lot of research that has been done over the past decades with regard to eating a plant based whole foods diet.
If you choose not to eat this way, that's your perrogative! Go for it! For myself, with a history of insulin resistance (type II diabetes) and a family history of my grandfather dying of a massive heart attack at 55, I am going to do everything I can to not have this be my future. Feel free to choose
I think there has to be a balance....you can still eat some meat, but go local or organic, dont shovel fast food and exercise. It's not rocket science folks.
I am French and the meat eaten as well as cheese in my country of origin is UNPROCESSED or at least used to be, until the spread of fast food in the last 15 years...And I don't think the French have that few heart attacks either as they tend to overeat. All my older relatives, as far as I can remember , have been under a lot of medical pressure to watch their diet. I am now in my 40's so it's not a new thing.
Oh boy. I see Youtubers are solving the world's problems in the comments section again.

Alaska47Boy 3 days ago
@Alaska47Boy I don't think that's exactly what the movie is trying to convey. But I may be wrong. But it seems to me that it is trying to promote that moderated lifestyle that you suggest... though i would say that a vegetarian diet would not be a bad idea for someone to pursue. There is no way a vegetarian can suffer from malnutrition if they go about it the correct way.
Aryacalanatha 3 days ago
@Aryacalanatha - From the sound bites and highlight reel from the "preview," there's no talk of moderation, whatsoever- it explicitly points to two things: prescription meds and very specific diet components: meat. There is no mention of exercise or active lifestyles in the preview, there is no mention of any other aspect which has ben shown to key physiological wellbeing - none. The only thing it makes mention of here is that a vegetarian lifestyle trumps all in getting there, which is slant.
Alaska47Boy 3 days ago
I was disappointed with this movie. I was hoping for a balanced view on how real, natural food can be your medicine, and it does have that as it's underlying theme. However, it is really more a propaganda film for the vegan lifestyle. It is extremely biased and uses skewed and/or weak science to support that view.
fmby 6 days ago
@fmby this film is based on scientific data from the most respected doctors and institutions on the planet. Maybe you just know more than than they do....Sounds like you are the one with the agenda. Please tell us, what are your qualifications?
Plushcat143 5 days ago
@Plushcat143 No, no it's not. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is not even considered a legitimate scientific institution. Don't believe me? Go join it. ANYONE can. Then try to join the Institute of Medicine. You can't, only around 60 medical professionals are permitted per year, and only by election. The American Medical Association is no fan of PCRM, and it's even listed in quackwatch as 'questionable'. It is an animal rights group, not a legitimate scientific institution.
fmby 5 days ago
@fmbyAnd that's not to say that there's anything wrong with legitimate animal welfare groups, either. My comment was not to provoke a vegetarian/meat eater debate, it was merely a call to sound science, that's all. I'm well aware that BOTH sides can be guilty of abusing science. To answer your question, my agenda is that proper scientific procedures be followed and unbiased conclusions be drawn from them. That was my qualm with this movie.
fmby 5 days ago
@Plushcat143 - This is a mock-umentary. A real documentary shows balance and multiple sides to show a lear picture. "Respected Doctors" are used how and
when the creators and those funding this film want to. There is a clear
agenda here, and 'fmby' is 100% correct. Those open-mouthed blinds
who nod their heads up and down while watching this probably also think
Michael Moore makes documentaries, and if you're not taking this with an
iota of salt, you're simply misguided.
Alaska47Boy 3 days ago
@Alaska47Boy Read "The China Study" and educate yourself on what the study is actually saying.
TheGeetarDog 1 day ago
@TheGeetarDog - I have read it. That has nothing to do with this mock-
umentary. It's a slant and has a clear agenda. Only the tinfoil hat wearers
and kool-aid drinkers are in agreement with what this film is saying.
Alaska47Boy 1 day ago
@Alaska47Boy I could never believe that someone could read that entire book and speak like this. You reveal yourself to obviously have a clear, bias by using terms "kool-aid drinkers" and "tin foil hat wearers" without speaking factually. Why are you so closed to considering the idea that a primarily plant-based, whole grain diet can have a dramatic effect towards reversing disease? I work in the nutrition field and there is almost universal agreement on this principal.
TheGeetarDog 23 hours ago
@TheGeetarDog - "You could never believe?" Sounds like you have a habit
of short-changing yourself, then. Sort of ironic you "believe" everything you
hear on this video, and yet have difficulty believing someone would take
take issue with what how it was being presented. I'm not "closed to
considering" ANY idea, and nothing I've stated thus far would indicate
that- I'm closed to the idea that the way you make people consider
those ideas is through slants and propaganda, like this film.
Alaska47Boy 15 hours ago
@fmby you actually stated that it was "more of propaganda film for the vegan lifestyle" Are you fucking insane?!?!?!?! The most expansive and downright biggest medical study ever conducted on Earth, by two doctors who are highly respected & educated. Cambell has an MS and PhD from Cornell in biochemistry, nutrition, and microbiology while Esselstyn has undrgd from Yale & an MD from Western Reserve!!! WHERE IS YOUR DOCTORATE!? Also, AMA dislikes PCRM only cause it fucks with busines as Usual!
MrChewymentos 4 days ago
@MrChewymentos No, I'm not insane. Although, if you talk like you type, I'm guessing that you may be teetering on the edge yourself. Perhaps lay off the weed you're so fond of. And I don't have a doctorate, what difference does that make? A PhD does not make someone infallible or unbiased. Robert Atkins had his doctorate. Does that mean his diet plan is unassailable? And if you put down the bong and remote and look into the study, or rather Campbell's analysis of it, you'd know that it was...
fmby 4 days ago
@MrChewymentos ..absolutely riddled with problems- and many scientists (with PhDs) have torn it in apart in the scientific community.
I actually have great respect for both Campbell and Esselstyn. They both seem like genuinely nice people and I certainly back their cause of trying to make people healthy through food. As I said before, I just want proper science to be used, that's all. The conclusions drawn in this movie were from a very biased point of view. That is extremely evident.

@fmby Why would someone want to spread propaganda about switching to vegetarianism? There's nothing to be gained! Your argument is preposterous.

@Aryacalanatha I think the two million members of PETA, and other animal rights activists worldwide, would disagree with you that there is nothing to be gained from persuading people to go vegetarian- which would stop millions of animals from being killed for food. It's preposterous that you could not deduce that for yourself.
fmby 2 days ago

Alaska47Boy 3 days ago
@Alaska47Boy Thank you, at least one person is not jumping down my throat. The crazy part is that I'm not even telling people to go eat a hamburger, spewing disparaging comments about vegetarians, or anything else. Be a vegan, I really don't care. I was just pointing out, which I thought was blatantly clear, that this is a one sided movie with an agenda that uses poor science. That's all.
fmby 2 days ago
@fmby I appreciate your willingness to comment on here and take a rational approach. That's what these discussions need. Of course the movie is incomplete in a sense because it's a movie and not a book or research study but to say that it has an agenda that uses "poor science" shows a lack of understanding. Challenge yourself to explore the facts and read "The China Study." It's the most thorough epidemiological study of it's kind.
TheGeetarDog 1 day ago

(Vegan)

THAT'S what needs to be changed.

Eat whatever makes your body feel good.
toniosg92 1 month ago 35
Toniosg92, I like your open minded perspective, but it's not meat and fat that make people sick and fat. It's sugar, corn syrup, grains and processed vegetables oils that make people sick and fat.
We've been eating large amounts of meat for 2.6 million years. It's because of fatty meat and hunting that we have the largest brains on Earth, compared to our body size.
Sugar forces your body to secrete insulin, which turns sugar into triglycerides/body fat. This has been known since 1965.
AppleSouffle1 1 month ago 11
@AppleSouffle1

@AppleSouffle1

ALucas73 1 month ago 2
@ALucas73
LegendxWind 1 month ago 2
@LegendxWind Ketosis to a certain degree is not harmful, and I never heard anything about it breaking down muscle tissue. Carbs in general are not the culprit, but our reliance on refined carbs are in my opinion the culprit. Asian diets don't eat anywhere NEAR the amounts of refined carbs and sugars that we eat in the west. Most of their diets consist of meats and vegetables with rice being the closest thing to a refined carb in site. Protein doesn't cause diabetes. Refined carbs do.
HelloImMrMarr 1 month ago
@glenm99 I don't think they are making it up at all - you only need to look at the Chinese etc. the facts are obvious. People just don't want to face up to facts - the western diet is killing us all very quickly. And @defergerth - there is more than enough protein in plant based foods for the human body. We eat too much protein. A good start for most people who can't face giving up the meat is to at least to stop eating the processed meat garbage, beef and pork are the worst.

defergerth 2 months ago
@defergerth Do some research and tell me any food where you don't get any protein from (except water of course). You'll see: protein is in everything! Eat your beans, eat your lentils, eat your veggies, have some brown rice or whole wheat noodles and you're good to go. Add some nuts and seeds if you want to boost your protein intake (that's what I do) and it's all good. Plant-based eating is by far easier than most people think :-)

@benthead did you know that in Sacramento, they are forbidding fast food joints from selling toys with happy meals/big kids meal unless they meet the necessary requirements for a healthy serving of food?

Diet and lifestyle is EVERYTHING! I changed my eating habits a year ago and cut our flour, sugar and grains and feel GREAT. I am 52 and menopausal. I lost 46 lbs, and no more pain in my joints, fatigue, or depression bouts. And NO MEDS, they cause a lot of these problems!
venetiancat 2 months ago
Is that guy seriously suggesting that MS, cancer, RA, and so on are caused by diet? Way to trivialize a bunch of important issues, jerk.
glenm99 2 months ago
@glenm99 all of these have possible links to diet. Some cancers are 100% PROVEN to be caused primarily by diet. So yeah, they have ap oint.
thunderinthevalley 2 months ago

Veganism is not only a strict vegetarian diet! respect for the other animals! stop speciesism!!

I don't agree with cutting out meat. But definitely agree with eating real organic foods and living an active lifestyle. Processed foods and laziness has made this country unhealthy. Don't agree with modern medication either.

But just remember peeps....eat all GOOD foods in moderation too......
crazy91182 2 months ago
Omnivores need to stop being so defensive. Even cutting out meat for 1 day a week (e.g. Meatless Mondays) makes a big difference. Every bit helps. No one is forcing you to give up meat. Both my parents have high blood pressure and they live on medication. I don't want to end up like that so I cut out meat.

cont. from previous post...or Bernando La Pallo, 109 (and looks like in his 70s), who eats mostly raw fruits, vegetables, raw fish too.
I'm certainly not bashing vegans here, like I said I eat mostly this way too, but to never eat animal food I don't think works in the long run, especially if you're athletic (I run too and can't seem to do as well if only vegan for long term).
distantstarrr 2 months ago
@distantstarrr You may be low in other nutrients such as a multi B or essential fatty acids which both are needed for long term stamina, if you run you must google Indian man 100 runs London Marathon, this elderly east Indian gentleman just ran the recent
London Marathon, and he is 100% vegetarian, he also said he drinks lots of ginger tea,
he looks fanatastic, he donates all his proceeds advertising to charities.
outdoorenthusiastBC 2 months ago
@outdoorenthusiastBC thank you, but yes, I do know of Fauja Singh and he occasionally eats a small amount of dairy...he didn't say how much, but I eat about 1 to 2 cups of nonfat/lowfat yogurt just 2 times a month, that's all, not daily. Sometimes I eat free range organic eggs instead, or even more rarely, some fish although I'm really trying to stay away from fish for good. I take multis, B complex, and C sometimes too, yet I still just seem to need some animal food.
distantstarrr 2 months ago
cont. from previous post...consider Mimi Kirk, a 72 yr. old raw food vegan, who eats nuts too, and she looks like she's 40 (I think the Campbell's are in their upper 70s, but look older). For those who know macrobiotic-based facial diagnosis, Dr. Campbell is very sanpaku, not good. And another oldster who looks amazing for his age is 100 yr. old Fauja Singh marathon runner, a vegetarian who eats lots of lentils and some dairy occasionally (and who obviously has no heart problems!).
distantstarrr 2 months ago
I've been mostly vegan for many years. I watched this movie yesterday and was quite frankly shocked at the appearance of Campbell, Campbell's wife, McDougal, and some of the other low fat practicing vegans. They look terrible for their age! I was expecting far younger-looking! My reasoning? I eat some organic dairy occasionally (about twice a month), and I eat higher protein (from soy products), and nuts too, and mostly raw. Maybe very low fat/low protein and no animal food ever is too extreme.
distantstarrr 2 months ago
I haven't had any red meat, pork, or chicken in almost a year.. I want to go vegan completely, but I am not in the right place for that right now. Hopefully I will get there soon. :)

Simple. Feed participants meat. Record what happens with their health. Feed control participants no meat. Record what happens with their health. Compare the results of the two groups. Studies have been extremely consistent in their findings for decades, but you don't hear them in the media because meat and dairy have the money. The results have been replicated independently over and over. The result is that meat consumption (and dairy/fish as well) leads to poor health.
SophistAssassin 2 months ago 16
@SophistAssassin It's not that simple. If you eat only meat, bad health arises, no argument there. Eating only vegetables, the same happens. Admittedly I don't have FIRST hand experience with being vegan, I like my meat. But I have had vegan friends that are constantly weak and sick because they live a very active and athletic life-style and don't get enough protein to support their body. There is NO room for processed food and I adamantly insist on organic, free-range meats, in moderation.
eodduck 1 month ago
@eodduck

@eodduck

Come on people! You don´t have to stop to eat good stuff and unhealth! Eat much less! Try to eat that green stuff from those hippies with some meat and some potatos(mashed, fried , roasted )or something else, but delicious. trust me, you will enjoy.
chakalaka80 3 months ago

I would have a 400% tax on meat.
drystyx 3 months ago
Just wondering about people who's diet is culturally low in vegetables - for example nomadic Mongolians. If they eat primarily milk products and meat, is there any data showing increased heart disease etc.? Anybody know anything about that?
yorevolution 3 months ago
