I had a house made out of wood and a tree right next to it (about 2-4 blocks away) and i did not like the tree and I don't make Back ups. And then I lit the tree on fire and the my house lit on fire so, I quickly exited the game and my house was safe!

you can increase the view distance for your server if you want chunks to start loading when they are further away. it will be at 10 at the moment.... it can be anywhere between 1 and 15

The gameplay is not great. I'm super bored with Minecraft at this point, especially the single player. No campaign, no story, no leveling outside of getting diamond. I've basically stopped in hopes that Adventure will be cool.

Stuff like replacing all the tree trunks with TnT in an area, or replacing all the dirt with netherrack or something - try odd combinations and see what happens =]
