A true badass. Shame about the girls shaking their bums and screaming...they were actually at the Justin Bieber gig down the street and slipped through a space/time flux attenuater and the effluvial winds made them disoriented. Bless their little hearts though...and bless John's.
Why are people complaining about the audience having fun? I don't get it, if you want an unpolluted version then listen to a recording. This is exactly what's it's meant to be. Blimey, you should hear me in the car!! I doubt John would find it irreverent, he'd laugh like a drain and we'd sing together.
This is what it was like the last time I saw him in Glasgow. I'm sure he wouldn't have minded the audience participation! He sang for us and let us do what we liked with his songs....and singing along seemed pretty damned good at the time. Bless you John for your gentle soul. Loved you Big Man.xx
I am sure that John did not mind the spirit, He still had it. Too bad to lose him. He truly "IS" one of the greats. The screeming could have been "Not done" respect, BUt the singing, Hey that is a beautiful song, I would have joined in. Yep damn sure would have. : -))))))Peace and Love!!
They should have stayed at home and sung along to the record if thats all they get out of it. I never put up with it, but I am often alone - going to a gig takes a lot of effort and expense - don't be shy people, turn around and say something! (For all of our sakes).
Definitely. Cropredy Festival is ALL about having fun and singing along. I was there in 2006 and John was fantastic and seemed to enjoy the crowed. See you Over the Hill John. x
my father was a BIG BIG fan of John. I used to listen to johns songs together with him. I never was able to see a show of him, but even though i´m sad that he died!
R.I.P JOHN!!!
PS: hope that there is going to be a special in the german ROLLING STONE ... pls tell me, if there is one in the british one.
As was my father, he took me to see John Martyn in 2006 in Newcastle, and I had only heard bits and pieces of his music before that. Being introduced to Solid Air and I'd Rather Be The Devil (amongst others) live was just mind blowing. I'll never forget that gig. Peace and love John.
Think of this, baby please come home, one world, couldn't love you more and others. Are these not among the most sincere and glorious love songs ever written? And the relationship between the songs and Martyn's voice is itself a beautiful marriage.
I'm so glad that I saw this great man perform live dozens of times in the 80's & 90's. I found it very difficult in recent years as he had deteriorated so much physically and mentally and seemed hell bent on self destruction. Such a terrible waste, he could have lived 20 more years if he'd listened to the advice of his exasperated loved ones. I even wrote to him, begging him to take care of himself and got the loveliest and funniest of replies from the man himself - He always did his own thing.
Have some bloody respect for the dead. This man devoted his life to music, even after losing his leg,he continued to gig all over the world and recently received an OBE for his contribution to music. I saw John perform 7 times live, each one more amazing than the next and was even blessed with sharing a pint with him. And from what I know of John he didnt suffer fools like you easily. Rest in Peace John. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
well said . i too shared a pint with him . he was part of me and my familys life for a very long time. his music saw me all the way to india and back during the early 80s . i will remember him and his music always , with love and respect .
There are going to be a few comments like this: I feel terribly sad at the moment. So glad I got the chance to see him live, and keep a record of his genius.
Not to sound too wanky, but the vibrato on that d# during the intro is magical. Wonderful natural playing. For all those complaining about the voice, he's not as bad as those bloomin wimmin in the crowd!
Got to agree that they don't add a whole lot to the song but pretty cool that he's got young girls jumping around singing along. His music will last a long long time.
he looks so nice and calm..and i never heared of him..only watched 3 videos lately.. and i start to like him..his singing is unique and guitar is so great :)
So great to hear an artist understand his own material in new,(dare I say deeper?) ways over the years. John also seems to be a stronger guitarist than ever.
i work at an airport that john martyn and his carer come through hes blind and can not walk but hey the guy has gave a lot of people something to sing about and is respected so much in the music world...he is legend and no-one can take that away,,,,,,legend

I hope I shine half as bright for half as long - and influence 10% of what JM has ... along with Roy Harper and the raft of English artists that swim in the deep... awesome, and awesome... and awesome...
If that's a modern audience, count me out at future gigs. What a bunch of idiots! I first saw John at a free gig summer '70 at Surrey University. He was wonderful. Great communicator of feel. Everyone remembers the beautiful young man of 35 years ago but hell, haven't we all changed in that time? That said, keep an eye on your health, John.
And this, too: "How sad to see this. Poor John." You're talking about him as if he's dead, ffs. He's not, although I get the point about the drinking. Isn't he diabetic as well? People with diabetes often have foot and leg problems, I believe, it wont all be down to the drink. The comments come across as patronising, even if you didn't intend them that way.
What a genius he WAS? Can you not see that the man has been touring for over 40 years living in the fast lane. If you listen to his latest offering 'on the cobbles',John still has that emotional and heartfelt song writing and his voice is getting better with age. He is still alive, still gigging, still drinking and he is STILL A GENIUS!
