That pump is a cool part of the farm's history. There are people over here in the UK paying big prices for these old relics. Well done on your finds, and Good hunting :D
@MNdigger I know! It kept my dogs from getting thirsty and I hope to remove that tree so it stands for another 150 years! According to my quick search, it dates back to the 1870's! So that is even better!
neat old well pump cool it still works :) you know old timers used to cache money in jars in what they called fence post safe's they would put them right under the post easy to spot them the nails to hold the bob wire were bent so you could lift the wire off and pull up the post to get at the money below. would most likely be with in eye site of the house too :)
@MichaelSwan66 Hey I did not know about the nails but that makes sense. Did you know it was usually the third post in? Actually the home I live in now was moved off the original homestead of two bachelor farmers who cached their money in mason jars. When they moved the house, they found in taking down the gate a fence post safe with silver and gold coins valued over $700 in the 70's! I wish they cached it in the walls! You never know! Get Grizzly!
Seems like you have some great sites to hunt and a lot of land to cover! It's pretty cool how that pump still works, just image who touched that! I think it is so cool to find something old and hold it in your hand and say that you are the first person to hold this since however old it is, like a coin from the 1800s! You never know who held that, it would be pretty cool to know that person's story! GL & HH
@planejet42 You know Don was just saying the same thing today holding the handle of that pump when he came by to update me on another property we are asking permission to hunt. You know, here in the Grizzly Groundswell those stories are exactly what I try to recover. To me they are more precious than silver and gold. Those that had the Pioneer Spirit and gave it their all to aquire that American Dream. These are the people who are my hero's. I love to detect and recover their story!
@GrizzlyGroundswell What a coincidence! I have an example of that, I found a badge/medal that says B.M. & P.I.U. of America which stands for Bricklayers, Masons & Plasterers International Union of America and I did a little research and found out that one of the presidents or chairmen of that organization was from my town!
