Erm, when the bible said these were gods, in the Hebrew it is translated Benai Elohim (sons of God). These were fallen angels from the original casting out of the rebellious host in heaven when Satan rebelled against God and 1/3 of the "stars" (angels) fell to the realm of earth.
To some extent mythology could be part truth, part fiction. But we see a definite correlation of myth and religion from so many different cultures. The genocide was for the preservation of Christ.
