  • Nice. It's basically a giant Kelly Kettle, sort of a rocket stove... Have you seen the Rocket Mass Heaters in all their various forms? It would be a cool project to build an in ground brick/fire brick Rocket Stove and set a gas HW heater atop, that way a J-tube gravity fuel feed could be used to require less tending. If I replace my HWH mite use it to try it but only in the summer where I'm at.Nice work + it's burning clean. The volume on the vid seems a bit low.. don't know if you can ez fixit.

  • @apples13able We are four taking baths so the extra 100 gal of hot water feeding the electric water heater really saves money now with soring elec rates. It was a no-brainer. I did try a rocket stove but it needs more design. The heater has a 26" diamater burn area so a few sticks of oak, some kindling, starter, 100 gal of water heats up pretty quick. The heater has 7 3" tubes heat exchange, very efficient. Replacing our curent water heater not an option. Thanks for looking!

  • So are you heating this as a closed system?

Thanks for sharing man, put this on my favorites.

  • @tryin2lhard yes, it pre-heats water to the electric water heater. I also have a direct line to the bathtub in the house. I wouldnt change a thing, works perfectly!

  • I have something similar but in little best shape manufactured.

  • @yemenifish I want to see it, sounds nice. I have replaced this unit with a 100gal. 7-tube commercial gas water heater that is in a small shed. It is much easier to use. thanks for the comment.

  • why not just run hot air from a hot air collector to heat the tank???

  • Your one smart cookie.... Looks like a nice addition to my shop, thanks.

  • I absolutely love this idea and it's one step to leaving the grid. However we've got to factor the daily time spent on it. What's your time worth? $5 $10 $30/hr??

Likewise the satisfaction of engineering something functional is absolutely priceless.

  • @foxhole1083 Yes, when there is no sun, then you have to use a wood fire. With the l00 gal comercial water heater, I only have to spend one hour every other day. I now have a nice building with a good chair, radio and tv, so its not so bad out of the elements. There is a unit that heats all your water and your house but is quite expensive. Gas water heaters are cheap, this one was free and the big one cost 140 bucks.

  • Are you still planning on doing an update video?

  • @mrbr549 I'm sooooo far behind but I am building a nice building for the 100 gal gas water heater. It works so well I cant believe it. I will make another vid in a couple of months.

  • UPDADE: I have located a comercial 100 gal gas water heater from a car wash and exchanged my 40 gal with it. We now have more than twice as much hot water and time between firings Video to follow.

  • That is totally cool, I favorited the vlog and hopefully some of my friends will be able to see it too. Our HW is Gas and yep it's a good part of our bill. I've thought about the black hose on a roof for HW in the summer but it wouldn't do in the winter (Central NY) this is pretty nice way, wood is always around our area too. Did you just use an old HW heater on top? maybe I didn't catch that part if you said.
