Too bad the sparks are gone. Why does GMDSS have to be so damn cumbersome?

Yep, I agree. And the trouble is that its the deck officers that now have to take over the communications in an emergency. They should really be concentrating 100% on saving the ship or getting the crew and passengers into the liferafts. In the old days the radio officer was dedicated to communications while the mates and engineers did the job they were trained to do.

And, like you say, GMDSS, is a complicated nightmare.

Maybe they will streamline it one day soon.

....I'm only 41 and was the second last year of trainees through the Australian Maritime College. I learnt morse and though most of my time (9 yrs) was spent on exploratory drill ships /rigs I did time as a sparks on an aussie coastal ship taking wx and nav warnings on my bakelite headset! Even though I could ring the MET Bureau by cell phone! Spent many an evening on the rig being regaled by the tales the old sparkies told! They were all unhinged and proud to be so....best job ever!!!!!
